Alex Luehring has been granted immediate eligibility by the NCAA to play this season for the University of Wisconsin women’s basketball team.

Luehring transferred to UW this summer from UW-Green Bay in order to be closer to her father Lester, who was suffering from kidney cancer. He passed away on Aug. 30 at age 54.

Luehring, a 6-foot-2 wing from Verona, applied for a family hardship waiver to the NCAA requirement that transfers sit out one season.

Badger Injuries:

Injuries have derailed a couple other promising freshmen. Carmen Backes, a 6-2 forward, recently underwent a procedure on her knee and will be out at least 4-6 weeks, and Jasmine Hale, a 5-9 guard, broke a finger in practice last week and will be in a cast for three weeks. Hale had been particularly impressive in early practices and was pushing for a starting spot.

Backes, arguably the centerpiece of the class, underwent another procedure in May and suffered a torn ACL in her junior season at Chisago Lakes (Minnesota) High School. Tsipis said her rehab is going well and the ACL is not an issue, but Backes could be a potential redshirt candidate.

“I think we have to be smart knowing that she hasn’t played since March,” he said.

The Badgers’ newfound depth has been put to the test early on, as injuries have sidelined Mueller, Beverley, Laszewski, Howard and Suzanne Gilreath at various times this fall. All should be ready to go today except for Gilreath, who has been out with a foot injury.

“At one point we were down to eight (players) with the two walk-ons,” Tsipis said. “Of 16, we had half of them. We’re still trying to figure out the last couple pieces and with people out it’s taken away the chance to see the chemistry the way I would’ve wanted.”

In the Badgers' (2-0) 68-57 victory at UW Milwaukee (0-2), Courtney Fredrickson left the game with an injury. Wisconsin trailed 24-15 after one and were terrible from the foul line.

While Wisconsin pulled itself together entering the second half, it experienced a huge loss when it was left without one of its starters for the night. Junior forward Courtney Fredrickson went down with a knee injury near the end of the second quarter and was forced to sit the remainder of the game.

...

Wisconsin’s scoring leader once again was senior forward Marsha Howard, who recorded her second straight double-double of the season. Howard led the Badgers on the offensive end with 16 points and on the boards with 10 rebounds.

In the fourth quarter, the Badgers experienced a bit of a dry spell, going over three minutes without a single point. Simultaneously, while the Badgers struggled, Milwaukee junior guard Jamie Reit had no problem getting her offense going as she hit some big shots in an attempt to lessen the deficit. Reit finished the night behind Levy with nine points and six rebounds.

Though this matchup helped illuminate some of Wisconsin’s strengths, such as another case of extremely balanced scoring and beating its opponent on the board, it also revealed some areas that need tremendous work. Wisconsin was 13-for-27 from the free throw line, something that should be addressed. It also saw the downside of Courtney Fredrickson leaving the game early with an injury.

A bit of an update on Courtney Fredrickson's knee injury. Fredrickson was on the bench but not playing. During the BTN+ broadcast, the Badger announcers said the prognosis for her return this was not good. The Badger defeated NDSU at the Kohl center 64-53.

At the Kohl Center, Wisconsin defeated IUPUI in OT 65-64. The Jaguars had excellent chances to win both at the end of regulation and in OT; but managed to toss them away. IUPUI was 10-29 from three and were led by post player, Macee Williams, with 31 points including 2-3 from three.

Neither team shot free throws well. The Badgers were 6-15 while the Jaguars were 14-22. Wisconsin heads to a Thanksgiving tournament in Nashville. Their next Kohl Center opponent is Duke.

A huge difference maker for Wisconsin was Imani Lewis. Lewis went from only playing 13 minutes in the first three quarters, while shooting 1-for-8 from the court, to finishing the fourth quarter shooting 4-for-6 and grabbing a crucial offensive rebound that forced overtime with the score knotted up at 59-59.

In overtime with 15.2 seconds left on the clock, the Badger’s were down one without the ball, thanks to the Jaguars’ sophomore guard Sydney Roule draining a clutch three-pointer and a missed free throw by Howard. On the inbound, pressure by junior guard Kendra Van Leeuwen, led to a jump ball which gave the ball back to Wisconsin with minimal time remaining on the clock. Howard came up big for the team, receiving a pass and, in her own words, “parting the seas,” and ended the game with a wide open layup.
