Evan Daniels: UA Association: Standout & Breakout Performers

The College basketball season was ushered out this past Monday, and on Friday the AAU circuit hit its stride, as the first of three spring Under Armour Association events tipped off.

Each of Under Armour’s programs played four games at Supreme Courts, located 45 minutes outside of the Windy City. The weekend provided an opportunity to evaluate the best 17’s teams on the Under Armour circuit.

Who were the standouts? Which prospects improved their stock? Here’s 247Sports take from the weekend:

TOP PERFORMERS
Chet Holmgren, C, Grassroots Sizzle
To put it bluntly, it was an eye opening weekend for Chet Holmgren. The 6-foot-11 big man impacted the game on both ends, showing versatile offensive scoring ability, but also playing role of rim protector on the opposite end. A thin, but gangly post prospect, Holmgren has deft touch around the goal, can maneuver on the block and is also able to step away from the rim for jump shots with range to the three-point stripe. Defensively, Holmgren was impactful and through four games leads the league in blocks. In our viewing, Holmgren swatted 12 shots. While his lack of strength can allow him to get pushed under the goal at times, his instincts, length, timing and ability to get to shots without fouling is impressive.
Recruiting: Minnesota, Purdue, Texas

Just saw another ranking where Chet's in the top 20 in the country... by the time the summer is up he will be top 10. He is CRAZY good for his size. Yes he can add some weight but he's like 15 or 16 years old.

STrib Q&A with Suggs:

How much has your high school and AAU teammate Holmgren developed in the last year?

So much. He’s become so much more mature on the basketball court. He’s starting to handle himself real well. Seeing him develop and play the way he is right now is definitely cool to see. He’s becoming his own man and becoming a force.

KC Star: Sophomores from Minnesota, Vegas extended hoops scholarship offers by KU

Chet Holmgren, a 7-foot, 190-pound sophomore forward from Minnehaha Academy in Minneapolis, has been offered a scholarship by Kansas, he announced Tuesday on Twitter.

Holmgren, the No. 45-ranked player in the recruiting Class of 2021 by Rivals.com, has also been offered by Missouri, Baylor, Vanderbilt, Georgia, Purdue, Marquette, Iowa, Gonzaga, Maryland, Florida, Minnesota, Texas A&M and others.

Minnehaha coach Lance Johnson has allowed Holmgren freedom to play both inside and on the perimeter.

“It’s the age of the stretch 4,” Johnson told the Lafayette Journal and Courier. “Everybody salivates over a 7-footer who can shoot threes. Most of those 4s also have some post moves and back-to-the-basket stuff and can mix it up.”

Holmgren, who has a 7-foot-6 wingspan, has watched tapes of former Dallas Mavericks standout Dirk Nowitzki.

“The game is changing,” Holmgren told the Journal and Courier. “There’s no back-to-the basket anymore. Everybody has to be able to handle the ball and shoot.”

Holmgren — he’s had as many as 15 blocks in a single high school game — is the son of former Minnesota big man David Holmgren, a 7-footer who played for the Gophers from 1984-88.

“It takes a minute to get past how skinny he is, but the dude is legitimately tough and has to be one of the most unique players in 2021,” Rivals.com’s Eric Bossi writes of Chet Holmgren. “He’s 7-feet tall, he runs like the wind and his offensive skill is off the charts. He isn’t just a good jump shooter for a big man, he’s among the best shooters regardless of position or class.

“Oh yeah, he leads the Under Armour Association in blocks. I mean he really leads it. He’s got 45 blocks in eight games. Next most in the league? Twelve.”

This young man just keeps improving by the day. He will end up with 40 or more power 6 offers. The powers in the ACC will wait (Duke, UNC) He always had advanced skill and coordination for his size. Very bright future.

I know he's young and will fill out some before college...

but man; these schools must have great confidence in their strength and conditioning staff. Chet looks like a mild breeze would tip him over. Hard to imagine him banging in the paint in the B1G.

Doogie with a nice interview on his Podcast with Chet.

Chet says facilities, academics, strength & nutrition program will all be important to him. He says he's wide open with his recruitment.
