Former Gophers and San Francisco 49ers standout Keith Fahnhorst died Tuesday at the age of 66.

The St. Cloud native played for St. Cloud Tech and then joined the Gophers, where he was an All-Big Ten tight end in 1973.

He finished his collegiate career with 28 receptions for 416 yards and earned his degree in psychology in 1974.

Fahnhorst was drafted by the 49ers in the second round in 1974 and was moved to tackle. He played all 14 of his NFL seasons with San Francisco (1974-87).

A two-time All-Pro (1983-84) and 1985 Pro Bowl selection, Fahnhorst was part of two Super Bowl Championship teams (XVI and XIX).

He appeared in 193 games, the second most among 49ers offensive linemen behind only Len Rohde and had the eighth-most regular season appearances in franchise history.

No cause of death was announced.

The Sacramento Bee reported today that "Fahnhorst battled polycystic kidney disease after he left the 49ers as well as neurological issues later in his life. He attended Dwight Clark Day at Levi's Stadium in October in a wheelchair."

Go Gophers!!

Remember watching him as a pro, but his college career was before my time. He must have been a big and good run blocking tight end for the Gophers.

he was always good for a Gopher story at lunch time DT - he loved Arbys.

Sad news. Didn't he also have a brother, Jim, who played for the Gophers?

Sad news. I remember him as a Gopher, he was very good, one of the better offensive lineman ever produced in the state on MN. RIP.

I met him once in the mid-1990s. Guy was still a physical giant. Nice guy as well. Sad news to hear of his death.

Sad. Seemed like a great guy.
My most prolific memories of Keith were during the mid 90's. I watched him many times at America Live Sports Bar at the Mall of America. He and the "Always Available " Dick Bremer would broadcast Gopher football. MOA would have the live satellite. The alternate was to watch on tape delay. I'd often see a dozen faces that were familiar. Any other Gopherholers?

Among those in attendance at Our Lady of Grace in Edina on Thursday for the funeral of Keith Fahnhorst was Pro Football Hall of Fame QB Joe Montana, who was a San Francisco 49ers two-time Super Bowl champion teammate of the former Gophers star.

Another 49ers teammate, linebacker Keena Turner, gave a moving eulogy for Fahnhorst, the former All-Big Ten tight end who became a Pro Bowl offensive tackle and died at age 66. Turner said nobody on the 49ers was more respected and beloved than Fahnhorst.

Other 49ers teammates in attendance included Keith’s brother, Jim, the ex-Gophers linebacker who won three Super Bowls with the 49ers; Bubba Paris, the former Michigan offensive lineman, and Guy McIntyre, the offensive lineman from Georgia.

More than four dozen former Gophers notables, including Bob Stein, Bob Morgan, George Adzick, Adam Kelly and Jim Brunzell, lined the aisles when Keith was wheeled to the altar of the church.
