Geno Crandall

How many guys has Pitino redshirted since he's been here?

I honestly don’t think I can remember him voluntarily red shirting anyone. Closest thing I think would Eric Curry sitting out injured last year or transfers sitting out because they have to, but that doesn’t really count.

I get that some people redshirt it just doesn't seem like pitino's thing. How many guys has Pitino redshirted while coaching here?

At some schools it’s a luxury not here yet. Hurt would of been a great red shirt candidate

I think if we get Crandall then we absolutely can afford to RS Gabe is we want to unless other guys get hurt of course but as of now, there are 6 guards/wings that will likely get more minutes than him.

This is from ways back but Doogie isnt wrong when he says we have crowded backcourt. I think Geno would start still but Geno, Pree, IW, Brock Stull, Gabe Kalscheur, potentially Marcus Carr. That’s a lot of depth. I wouldn’t say crowded unless Carr becomes eligible though

Kinda there will be minutes for everyone though. Hurt will probably get some time at the 4 especially with Oturu maybe missing some time during the non-con season. So McBrayer, Kalscheur or Stull will play some 3 when Amir goes to the bench at times as well. I'm pretty sure everyone with the program fully expects Carr to have to sit this season.

I think Carr will sit too. We’d be loaded if we got him but I don’t think loaded back court would be reason if Geno doesn’t come here cause I’m sure Xavier and Gonzaga do too

I ultimately think it is going to come down to the Gophers or Gonzaga on who Geno decides to play for. The Gophers offer the hometown appeal along with opportunity for big playing time and a chance to be a potential tournament team & compete in the Big Ten. Gonzaga offers a chance to make a potential deep tournament run and compete for a National Championship and Crandall would likely slot into the role vacated by Silas Melson graduating for the Zags so he’d definitely have a big role.

Gonzaga Roster:
Josh Perkins: 3 year starter at PG
Zach Norvell Jr.: 2 guard with NBA potential starter last year redshirt sophomore.
Joel Ayayi: Redshirt freshman from France
Corey Kispert: returning rotation player likely back-up at the small forward position
Rui Hachimura: projected lotto pick in 2019 draft combo forward
Killian Tillie: projected draft pick in 2019 at forward
Jeremy Jones: forward that played spot minutes more of a defensive specialist
Brandon Clarke: transfer from San Jose State that is eligible was 1st team All-Mountain West
Jacob Larson: redshirt sophomore center from Denmark

Recruits
Filip Petrusev: Top 100 PF/Center recruit from Serbia via Montverde Academy
Greg Foster Jr: Shooting Guard from Nevada, not super highly rated

I guess you could call it a crowded backcourt, just based on quantity. But, the quality is a question mark.

Dupree is an OK player, but he's not great and is strictly a 2.

Washington has had a couple of moments, but he's been mostly bad thus far. I'm not counting any chickens there.

Carr likely isn't playing this year. Certainly not something you want to plan your 2018-2019 season around.

Kalacheur is kind of a specialist. He's a spot shooter if he plays. He's almost certainly not a guy who will get significant minutes. If so, things have gone off the rails.

That leaves Stull as a proven guy, and given that he hasn't played a full season in a major conference, there are question marks there.

Successful programs would be calling our backcourt a potential big-time weakness going into this year.....with or without Crandall.

Yes, if Coffey can't play...which I missed if true...then I'd agree it could be viewed a potential weakness.

McBrayer, to me is a nice player when he is healthy. Washington certainly has the ability to be superb. His overall season numbers tell a different story than you are giving him credit for. IW finished as a better player than he started. I believe he will be a very nice player this year. I agree Stull should be solid.

The biggest question mark for me is Gabe....will he contribute?

We have plenty of room for Crandall and he'd make our team better in many ways. Should he decide to go elsewhere or fail to graduate...I'm guessing we have a backup candidate that appears.

Healthy, eligible we are fine, but another point guard would be very helpful.

Even if we get Crandall I highly doubt Gabe would RS. Doesn't mean he's going to play a ton, but redshirting a guard is pretty rare. It's a little more common for big guys, but still fairly rare. Throw in the fact that we already have two guys sitting out this season due to transferrring -- having three guys sit out the entire season due to non-injury reasons after a season where we just dealt with injuries like we did seems crazy to me.

It's absurd to suggest we have a crowded backcourt. Typical MN reporter passive-aggressiveness (suggesting he should go elsewhere).

We start the season with only 11 guys (none of the walk-ons will play, and Carr and Willis have to sit; forget about Carr's intent to "appeal," it's a wish not a possibility).

Of those 11, two are freshmen who may be good players in time, but are not "blue chip" recruits who are going to play a big role as freshmen, more likely to play spot minutes when needed due to foul trouble, injuries, etc. So that basically leaves a regular 9 man rotation, at best, if everyone stays healthy. We are THIN and minutes will be available.

Plus, we will play 3 guards most of the time. Almost 120 minutes will be available for IW, McBrayer, Coffey, Stull, and Crandall. That's almost 25 MPG if all are healthy, and that's a pretty big "if."

Crandall would probably start at either the 1 or the 2.

So who do we have for big men to back and/or help Jordan Murphy?

1. Curry
2. Hurt

Curry will also play a lot of center (probably starts), depending on how able/well Oturu is able to play.

Hurt will never play the 5, but he can play some minutes at the 4, especially if he continues to get stronger.
No disagreement with that statement. He'd be undersized but he could play if needed.

I WOULD RATHER SEE MY KID AT THE 4 FOR MINNY THAN HURT, BUT HE IS GOING TO IU TO GET AN EDUCATION AND BECOME A TEACHER. I JUST DONT THINK HE IS BIG ENOUGH. BTW MY KID IS 6'9" & 230. HAVE A GOOD DAY...CANT WAIT FOR GOPHER FOOTBALL & BASKETBALL TO START.

DJ played the 4 at 6'-7", 195, not sure size is the issue.

Side note: Guessing you follow Jelly on Instragram too?

Kind fun to watch for a few mins when he goes live. Was him, Hurt, Carr & Gabe rotating 1on1 at the practice facility the other night.

not screaming...i just normally use caps on all my sheriff department forms, reports, etc.. and yes...army training too.
