Gophers shortstop Terrin Vavra was one of the top middler infielders in the country this season. It didn’t go unnoticed as he was named a First Team All-American by Baseball America.

Vavra led the Gophers with a .385 batting average, 77 hits, 10 home runs and 55 runs batted in. He is the 40th toughest player to strike out in the nation, averaging one strikeout every 11.8 plate appearances. After battling a back injury for the majority of his sophomore season, Vavra bounced back this season as one of the top players on Minnesota’s roster. He becomes the first Gopher since Derek McCallum in 2009 to earn First Team All-American honors. Vavra is also a finalist for the Brooks Wallace Award, honoring the nation’s top shortstop.

In addition to Vavra, freshman pitcher Patrick Fredrickson earned Second Team All-American status, along with freshman closer Max Meyer, who was named a Third Team All-American.

Fredrickson, the Big Ten Freshman and Pitcher of the Year, finished the regular season with a 1.78 ERA, allowing just over six hits per nine innings. He won nine games this season and quickly became one of the top starting pitchers in the country. His poise and overall contributions helped lead the Gophers to a Big Ten championship.

Max Meyer tied the program record with 16 saves in his first season with the Gophers. He surrendered a run in just four of his 10 total appearances, fanning 43 batters. The Woodbury, Minn. native shut the door during many important games this season with his low 90s fastball and bending off-speed pitches.

The Gophers will open the NCAA Tournament Friday at 7 p.m. against Canisius. The game is sold out and only third party sites like StubHub have available tickets. This weekend will mark just the fourth time Minnesota has ever hosted the NCAA Baseball Regional at Siebert Field. For a full preview, follow the link.
