5. P.J. Fleck, Western Michigan and Minnesota (30-19 ATS): What makes Fleck's overall record remarkable is how poor a start he got off to. The 2013 season was Fleck's first at Western Michigan, and none of us were all that familiar with the idea of rowing boats just yet. Fleck's first team at WMU went 1-11 on the field and was only slightly better at the sportsbook, going 4-8 ATS. That turned around quickly, as the Broncos went 10-2 ATS in Fleck's second season, and then a respectable 7-5 in 2016. In 2017, Fleck's first season at Minnesota, the Gophers went 9-4 ATS. He's young, energetic and certainly causes people to feel one way or another about him, but I'm pretty sure I know how gamblers feel about Fleck.

Go Gophers!!

More proof PJ Fleck is the greatest coach alive. He went 9-4 against the spread while only playing 12 games. Outdoing his previous effort of going 7-5 against the spread while playing 13 games in 2016.

Is there nothing PJ Fleck can’t do?

Is there no stat CBS can get correct?

I'm thinking the Cotton Bowl game, Jan 2 2017, got lumped into the 9-4 record.

Alternative facts don't require any fact-checking.

Yeah, it’s a bizarre article that doesn’t make a lot of sense. I don’t recall us covering a lot of spreads last year. We didn’t cover vs Buffalo, MTSU could be counted either way depending on book, didn’t cover either Purdue or Maryland. Certainly didn’t cover NW, Wisconsin, Michigan. Iowa was close but no cover per Oddshark. So we’re at a minimum 6 that didn’t cover with a few others that were close.

This is an old man tangent but I saw a stat the other day that half of high school seniors now graduate with an A average. Due to changes in the SAT recently there is inflation in that yardstick as well to the point colleges are forced to look at other attributes when determining baseline competency for admissions. Everyone’s a math savant. It’s not surprising there is a noticeable decline in attention to detail when it’s been replaced as a plank fundamental in the schools. The pressure on schools and teachers to get kids qualified for college is having predictable effects. The world needs ditch diggers too. Some of the editors and sports writers at CBS and ESPN, for example.

I went to a high school graduation ceremony this past Thursday night. They read the names of all the students who had a 3.75 or above. It had to be close to half the class. Grade inflation cheapens the accomplishments of those who could actually get good grades without the inflation.

Article references that the Gophers went 9-4 against the spread. Lazy"journalism". If you can't get basic facts right.....

It is even more suspect journalism when you realize that just the year before the 2017 season, the GOPHER FOOTBALL TEAM went 9-4 against the opposition in real games. Perhaps that cofused the issue for the journalists.

Wait, are you saying wins are more important than recruiting or covering spreads?

Heaven forbid we just let an attempt at positivity, stay positive...

This isn't just minimizing some positive take on a statistic, the problem here is that the underlying stat was untrue. It would be like if someone ran an article saying that no major league team has won more games in the past 5 years that the twins. It would be nice if true, but it's not correct.

So many people are comfortable with spread of misinformation. This is just a stupid football issue but we see normally intelligent but hopelessly politicized people justifying injustice and their political agenda via lies like "only 2% of women lie about sexual assault" or lawyers getting rich off lawsuits related to the media-driven narrative "99% of football players had CTE" or industrial, financial, and political interests pushing false climate science in an attempt to debunk the very real problem of global warming.
