Early assessments of the Gophers football 2019 recruiting class have been positive, despite the U’s primary target and the top in-state recruit picking Notre Dame live on television last month.

Eight days after Edina offensive tackle Quinn Carroll announced he was giving an oral commitment to the Fighting Irish, Gophers head coach P.J. Fleck received a pivotal pledge from a top-rated player in his home state of Illinois, defensive end Jason Bargy.

Bargy now headlines Fleck’s first 11 commits for 2019, and his inclusion pushes the group higher into the top 25-ranked classes nationwide at an early stage in the recruiting cycle, according to rivals.com and 247sports.com.

Bargy, a 6-foot-4 and 255-pound four-star recruit, is the 185th-ranked recruit in the country, per ESPN. From Momence, Ill., about 55 miles south of Chicago, Bargy is one of the highest-rated prospects Minnesota has nabbed since ESPN started recruiting rankings in 2009. The other two are Fleck signings from the 2018 class, defensive end Alex Reigelsperger (141) and guard Curtis Dunlap (149).

“That commitment was a big statement for those coaches,” ESPN recruiting reporter Tom VanHaaren told the Pioneer Press this week. “… I think that says a lot about what they are able to do.”

The Gophers class has as many commits (three) from Illinois as from Minnesota. The Illinois additions include 6-foot-7 offensive tackle J.J. Guedet, and 6-foot-2 cornerback Tyler Nubin, the second-highest rated recruit in Minnesota’s class thus far and another top player in his state.

“(Nubin) looks like he could play for them right now,” said Allen Trieu, a Midwest recruiting analyst for 247sports.com. “He, in person, looks like a legitimate Big Ten corner. He’s put together.”...

This is positive article and I am excited for the future of the program. Fleck and his staff appear to be bringing in a higher level of recruits. Fingers crossed for a high level QB recruit.

This could really end up a great class, a really great class, and who really cares what state they are from.

If anything.....this is a good sign. It always sucks to lose top in-state talent.....but if we can go into other states with P5 teams and steal some of their players.....it speaks well of Fleck and staff.
