Assistant Krystle Seidel accepts head coaching position at Macalester:

After 10 years as a part of the University of Minnesota soccer program, Krystle Seidel has accepted a job as the next head coach at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minn.

"I want to thank Kim Chandler for this unbelievable opportunity at Macalester College," Seidel said. "I will forever be indebted to the University of Minnesota soccer program for taking me in with open arms as a student-athlete and allowing me an extremely remarkable start to my coaching career, and giving me opportunities to grow as a person, coach, and leader over the past nine years."

"I want to thank University of Minnesota athletic department for its support through this process," Seidel added. "I am especially grateful for Stefanie Golan's leadership and mentoring over the past six years and Mikki Denney Wright's willingness to make me a part of history at Minnesota Soccer as both a player and a coach. The time I have spent with the program has shaped who I am as a person and I will forever be appreciative of that. I love Gopher Soccer and plan to support it as an alum for years to come."

After one year in a Maroon and Gold uniform, Seidel jumped right into the coaching scene. During Seidel's time with Minnesota as a coach, the Gophers have made the NCAA Tournament four times, and helped win the 2016 Big Ten regular season and tournament title. Seidel has primary coached defenders in her time with the program, and helped coach her fifth player to All-Big Ten honors. In 2017, the Gophers also qualified for the Big Ten Tournament for the 10th straight season, making it every year Seidel has been a part of the staff.

Molly Rouse has officially joined the University of Minnesota women’s soccer staff as an Assistant Coach, announced by head coach Stefanie Golan today.

“We are thrilled to add alumna Molly Rouse to the coaching staff. Molly has such a passion for the program and is a bright young coach who is committed to influencing the lives of young women through coaching,” Golan said. “We have watched her work her way through the profession and learn each step of the way, and she has really blossomed under Coach DiIanni at Iowa this past year. She embodies all that Minnesota Soccer stands for and we look forward to the impact she will make.”

Rouse, a Minnesota soccer alum, played in 88 career games for the Maroon and Gold in her four seasons that spanned form 2007-2010. Rouse netted 18 goals with the Golden Gophers while adding 17 assists for a grand total of 53 points in her career....

...Rouse rejoins the Gophers as an assistant coach after making multiple other assistant coaching stops since leaving in 2010. She most recently coached the University of Iowa (2017-18), Nebraska-Omaha (2017), Buffalo (2015-16) and Alabama State (2014). Prior to coaching Rouse was played a few years professionally, competing for the Minnesota Kings and Vancouver Whitecaps in the Women’s Premier Soccer League.

The ladies played their first exhibition game last night, defeating Kansas State 3-1 in Manhattan, KS.

April Bockin scored twice and had an assist. She was one of the leaders in the NCAA last year with 12 assists.

Freshman McKenna Buisman added the third goal. She's the daughter of current Minnesota State-Mankato Athletic Director Kevin Buisman.

The ladies held a 14-5 edge in total shots, including 10-4 in shots on target. Maddie Nielsen got the start in goal.

The Gophers return home to host South Dakota State in their final exhibition match on Saturday at the Robbie. Kickoff is 6 p.m.

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – It started and ended as a picture perfect opening night for Minnesota soccer. Overcoming a scoreless battle in the final seconds, freshman Patricia Ward netted the game winner with a breakaway goal during the game's closing seconds as the Gophers defeated Utah, 1-0.

"This was such a team win and I couldn't be more proud of them," said Head Coach Stefanie Golan. "Maddie [Nielsen] did what she had to do tonight in goal and gave our back line a tremendous amount of confidence in what was behind them."

With just over 30 seconds remaining the Gophers had one last chance to get a shot off. Using her senior experience, April Bockin quickly sent the free kick to the Minnesota attacking third where Makenzie Langdok played a header perfectly to Ward. Taking one touch to gain control, Ward then fired the shot off her right foot past the diving Utah goalkeeper to net the match's only goal.

LOGAN, Utah – A two goal second half effort lifted Minnesota soccer over Utah State Sunday afternoon, 2-1. The Gophers saw goals from senior Maddie Castro and freshman McKenna Buisman in the final 22 minutes to close out the opening weekend of play in comeback fashion.

...

With their backs against the wall at the break trailing 1-0, despite leading in shots 11-1, Minnesota used a steady offensive attack to break through in the final 45 minutes.
The Gophers continued to pile on the shots until finally breaking through in the 69th minute. Molly Fiedler collected an assist playing it perfectly to Castro from 12 yards out. Wasting no time firing one to the back of the net Castro tied the match up at a goal apiece.

The 1-1 tie did not last long as Castro played a ball off her chest before feeding it to TJ McKendrick. Taking a touch to control, McKendrick sent a perfect cross to Buisman whose header was placed perfectly between the posts in the 77th minute for her first collegiate goal.

On a wet and slippery night at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium it was another freshman with the game winner as Minnesota soccer opened up a seven-match home stand. After allowing an early goal, the Gophers completed a double overtime comeback win over Ole Miss, 2-1. Freshman Megan Gray in the 109th minute picked the perfect time to net her first collegiate goal.

...

Battling late game fatigue, the Gophers defense hung tough to fend off an Ole Miss corner kick. The Maroon and Gold quickly went the other way as April Bockin found some room on the outside flank. Bockin's shot from 20 yards out hit the right post but the rebound landed perfectly to Gray. Wasting no time Gray sent a quick shot to the back of the net before the Rebel goalkeeper could recover.

Behind two goals by April Bockin, the Gophers defeated Nebraska 2-0 and advancedto face Penn State for the B1G tourney championship.

Here's Bockin's opening goal:

<script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

2-0 win in the semis for Minnesota over Nebraska. April Brockin with both goals. First goal was 3 minutes into the game and was a beautiful play and shot. It was 1-0 for the majority of the game and April scored her second when Nebraska was pressing with like 4 minutes left. Good win for the squad and they get Penn St. on Sunday...

And the second:

For the first time this year, I got a chance to watch the team for an extended amount of time.

Bockin's finishes were spot on. She's incredibly quick and Kate Markgraf commented on how if given a chance to run at you as with the ball at her feet, she's really dangerous.

Molly Fiedler was really good today imo. She's always been pretty physical in the middle, but I felt she played strong on both ends of the field today. Nebraska had all kinds of issues dealing with her and Emily Heslin in the middle. Also, Fiedler's through-ball to Bockin in the first half was a thing of beauty.

It's too bad Nikki Albrecht was ill. Would have been fun to see her get a few more minutes.

Defensively I thought they maintained their shape and were well organized. Also thought Patricia Ward might pop one in with the looks she was getting, but it didn't happen.

Overall, a very solid all-around showing.

On to Penn State and the championship game on Sunday!

Interesting note as to Nebraska the team the Gophers beat today. The Gophers have shut them out going back to 2014. Really have them stonewalled. Penn State Sunday and we do have a chance if they ladies can keep the tight defense going. As to the defense, the Gopher ladies got lucky in a couple situations today but thats the way the game goes sometimes.

No team was luckier than Penn State. They advanced on an Illinois own goal.

Tied at 0-0 after two overtimes, MN wins 5-4 over Penn State in the Shoot out! BIG TEN CHAMPIONS!

Yes---the Gopher Ladies know how to WIN!

Have to say the ladies are very deserving.

Got a chance to watch later stages of the first half and virtually all of the second and the ladies created plenty of offensive momentum after halftime. Some of it was due to a howling wind that both teams had to deal with, but they looked composed and strong again. Defensively, they did a nice job closing down space even as Penn State's players sunk towards the center line to get touches.

April Bockin is a great player. She looked pretty/very dangerous at various stages of the second half. Also good to see Nikki Albrecht back in the lineup for extended minutes. Obviously, Maddie Nielsen also came up huge during the PKs.

Congrats to coach Golan and the Gophers!!! Picked the perfect time to start playing their best soccer!

Pretty much a novice when it comes to knowing about women's soccer: Question - will April Bockin have a chance to further her career? (play on US national team, get drafted for the NWSL?)

She's definitely a professional soccer prospect, although I'm not sure she's good enough to play in either the NWSL or the for the national team at this time. I think she'll get looks from NWSL teams, but making a final roster will be tough. Making the national team roster is even tougher considering the level of player that the women consistently put on the field.

With that said, she's very skilled and has a nice initial burst with the ball on her feet. She can also score the ball, but I've always felt she's at her best when she has a quality forward alongside her she can play off of. Very good on the wing and serves a beautiful ball when given the chance. The biggest issue will be physicality imo. She's not especially big and might get bumped off the ball more easily at the professional level.

If she gets physically stronger and can maintain her speed, then I think she might be able to make it. Nevertheless, I'd be shocked if teams (both in the NWSL and European clubs) aren't interested in her.

Gophers get Auburn in the first round of the NCAA's and then a likely matchup with 2nd seeded UCLA.
