Former Red Raider, Lyndsey Whilby was granted immediate eligibility at Purdue.

Purdue women's basketball sophomore Lyndsey Whilby was granted immediate eligibility for the 2018-19 season Friday after transferring from Texas Tech University this summer. Whilby and her Boilermaker teammates are scheduled to open the season Nov. 4, hosting Ashland University for an exhibition game at Mackey Arena.

"We're excited about the immediate impact that Whilby will have for our team this season," said Purdue head coach Sharon Versyp. "Already having a season of Division I basketball under her belt, she provides with more experience and gives us another dimension of play on the wing."

The Atlanta native appeared in all 30 games in her freshman campaign with the Red Raiders, starting nine, and averaged 7.2 points and 2.3 rebounds per game. She played in WC Celtics AAU Program and won three straight state titles at McEachern High School.

Purdue women’s basketball head coach Sharon Versyp announced Thursday that senior Nora Kiesler will not play her fourth and final year of eligibility with the Boilermakers due to injury. The senior captain has had concussion issues throughout her career and will cease competition on the advice of her physician, family and team.

“It’s a sad way for her career to end, but this is in the best interest of Nora’s health and well-being,” said Versyp. “She’s been such a great part of our program for the last three seasons, setting records, providing us with a valuable voice on the floor and doing amazing things in the classroom. The good news is that she will still be able to be a great influence for her team off the floor and on our sideline.”

Kiesler has appeared in 89 games over the last three seasons, averaging 2.1 points and 2.1 rebounds in 9.5 minutes per game. Over the last two campaigns she’s shot a stellar 90 percent at the charity stripe and connected on 45.6 percent from the field in 2017-18. She tied for the Boilermakers’ freshman single-game blocked shots record, rejecting seven at Penn State in 2016, a double-overtime win for the Boilermakers in University Park.

Purdue loses to St. John's:

In the opening game of the Women’s Paradise Jam in the US Virgin Islands, the Purdue women’s basketball lost, 68-62, Thursday night to St. John’s.

It was the Boilers’ (4-1) first loss of the season.

St. John’s (3-0) had four starters score 14 points each – Akina Wellere, Curteeona Brelove, Alisha Kebbe and Tianna England. Purdue, meanwhile, had only two score in double digits – Karissa McLaughlin (25 points) and Ae’Rianna Harris (17). Harris also had a double-double with 10 rebounds.

Despite losing each of the first three quarters and being down, 53-45, going into the final 10 minutes, Purdue had its chances. Down 10 with 7:17 to go, 58-48, the Boilers made a run. With 2:52 to go, they were down only three, 60-57, after a 3-pointer by Hardin Cassidy, her only points of the game.

Neither team scored in the next 2+ minutes, however.

With 36 seconds to go, Qadashah Hoppie made a 3-pointer for the Red Storm making it 63-57. Yet, a Purdue layup by McLaughlin, 2 free throws by St. John’s Kebbe followed by a 3-pointer by McLaughlin made the game still within reach, 65-62.

After a foul by Kayana Traylor to stop the clock with 12 seconds left, Kebbe missed the second of two free throws. But an offensive board by St. John’s, sealed the outcome.

For Purdue coach Sharon Versyp, it was St. John’s field goal shooting that made the difference – going into the game that did not statistically favor the Red Storm.

The Ohio Bobcats (7-0) defeated Purdue (6-3) in Athens 80-73. Ohio outscored the Boilers 26-9 in the second quarter.

Purdue and #25 South Carolina go to double OT before SC wins, 82-73 in Lafayette. Good effort by the Boilers, although SC still a rebuilding "work in progress".

I'm still amazed that Purdue lost after Dawn Staley gifted a technical for being out of the coaching box.

Purdue (8-4) struggled to put away Albany (2-10) 53-41. It was 40-39 with 5:34 minutes remaining. Ae'Rianna Harris scored 23 for the Boilers.
