The Gophers have received a commitment from four-star defensive end Jason Bargy (Momence, Ill.) He chose the Gophers over offers from Iowa State, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan State, Notre Dame and Wisconsin. He has a composite rating of 0.9258, according to 24/7 Sports and is the second ranked player in the state of Illinois. He is ranked 13th among weakside defensive ends. Bargy becomes the ninth commitment in the Gophers’ 2019 class.

Bargy measures in a 6-foot-4, 252 pounds and has an explosive first step. He sheds through blockers by using his natural upper body power and hands very well. He has experience with his hand in the dirt, as a stand-up rusher and even inside on pass rushing downs. Bargy will probably project as a potential "R" rusher if the Gophers elect to stay with the hybrid defensive look. However, he might be the best five-technique. What really stands out his relentless motor and speed to run down the quarterback all over the field. He also sprinted down the field to chase long running plays, catching up with running backs in the third level of the defense. Bargy will occasionally use a long-arm jab to toss an offensive tackle and backs them into the quarterback to force a collapsed pocket. His athletic testing would be very impressive because he even lined up at running back and showed how explosive he is when gets a head of steam downhill. Bargy runs track in high school and recently took first place, finishing with a 11.44 in the 100-meter at 225 pounds. He is still raw as a player, but he has all of the traits to be a very disruptive player at the next level.

This is a major recruiting move by the Gophers, who managed to fend off numerous rivals and quality programs to land a very talented player. He'll team up with Di'von Harris, Chris Daniels and Keonte Schad to create a much-needed talent injection on the Gophers' defensive line for 2019.

Nice get! Currently 5th-highest rated Gophers recruit ever according to 247 composite.

Definitely makes the Carroll miss hurt less, it’s easy to forget the places like IL,MI and OH have more talent than MN?

Fleck in 2 years is putting together the best defensive line talent seen in decades for the Gophers.

What an absolutely huge recruiting win. Bargy is the #2 rated player in Illinois. We now have 3 of the top 10 recruits in Illinois - Bargy, Nubin and Guedet.

We are doing a great job addressing the d-line.

Dang, I like.

Very nice offer list...getting this kid and the other d-end Harris is huge for the program. 2 very wanted croots!

This is great news. I believe I read that PJ now has 3 of the 10 recruits in the state of Illinois from this class and that Bargy is like the 3rd highest rated recruit to choose the Gophers in the Internet era (starting in 2000).

This one is a big deal.

He got Bateman committed before he blew up. He got Dunlap and Faalele because of Zack Annexstad. Great gets, no doubt, but there were some some qualifiers there that made me wonder how real this perceived recruiting turnaround was (just last week, we were last in the B1G in average 247 composit rating).

No qualifiers here. This is a big time recruit highly coveted by many high-end programs. Even I'm nektoning, or whatever, this morning. Good for PJ. I'm guessing he felt pretty good after getting off of that call.

per USA Today:

The Golden Gophers finished 2017 with a disappointing 5-7 record, missing a bowl game in the first season under former Western Michigan coach P.J. Fleck. now the coach is doing everything possible to make sure that doesn’t happen again for years to come, with his 2019 efforts getting a huge lift from its latest commitment.

Jason Bargy, a four-star defensive end prospect from Momence High in Illinois, chose Minnesota on Wednesday, passing over scholarship offers from the likes of Notre Dame, Michigan State, Wisconsin and Purdue, among others.

Bargy finished 2017 with 88 tackles and 11.5 sacks, sterling numbers that helped solidify his status as one of the nation’s top-200 recruits. He’s considered the No. 2 overall recruit from the state of Illinois and ranks as the highest rated recruit to commit to Minnesota since 2015.

Go Gophers!!

This dude already looks like a man. He’ll be terrorizing backfields for 3-4 years unless he gets drafted early.

Go Gophers!!

247 has him at 255. Wonder if it's just a typo from Greder. From the videos I've checked out he looks very explosive off the line and has a serious motor.

It sure would be fun to play Notre Dame in a bowl game in 2021 and watch Bargy throw Quinn the eskimo all over the place....

Great commit. Illinois is Gopher Country!

Now I'll just hold my breath until National Signing Day so he doesn't get cold feet.
