PJ Fleck Interview on Sports Huddle 5-6-18

It’s possible he just had 9 in his head because they were talking about depth and evening out the classes (scholarship players). You don’t usually offer scholarships to specialists every year.

I tend to not worry about every little thing a coach says. There were people that did that with Kill and Claeys too. I guess I just like to give a coach the benefit of the doubt. It’s not like they’re busy or anything. It’s silly to spend so much time breaking down everything he says IMO. Especially for those that always tell us how much they hate listening to him. Weird that it seems to be these same people that comment the most about what he says.

For all the "Special teams are a small part of the team" fans - I trust that no one will be upset if the Gophers lose a winnable game because of a missed field goal, or a bad long-snap, or a blocked punt.

Mis-stating the number of seniors on scholarship may seem like a small thing. Maybe it was a slip. maybe it was an honest mistake.

BUT, if it was deliberate, then that is a different matter.

and Spoof - hang in there, man. I tell myself I'm quitting this board about once a month, but it's like heroin or cigarettes - I can't kick it.

Maybe one of us needs to start a Gopher Hole 12-step group.

"Hi, I'm Shorty and I'm a Hole-aholic........"

This program has been awful for decades, hasn't defeated Wisconsin in forever and people are honestly concerned about whether the coach is concocting some sort of diabolical mind trick by telling the public they have 9 scholarship Seniors instead of 11? Look at the question that was asked, it was in regards to Freshman coming in and playing. Fleck said they have 9 scholarship Seniors, so they are going to have to. None of the Freshman scholarship players are either K's or LS' so they would be filling in on offense/defense where the Gophers have 9 scholarship Seniors. That's only one way to look at it though. As I mentioned before the last time this was brought up, we don't know for sure if all 11 of those guys will be back in the Fall, but Fleck does. Would it surprise anyone if, for example, Jerry Gibson decided to transfer or was informed his scholarship was not being renewed? Why jump on such a small thing that none of us can know for sure is even inaccurate?

I think everyone should be capable of giving Fleck a break on this.

I think the coach knows his own team numbers. It sounds like 9 or 10, maybe he knows something we don't. Either way I don't think it matters to much, let's keep seeing some progress on the field and in the recuiting (classroom seems fine...maybe off the field after all this and the bball team has been through?) and finally take the next step and beat Becky! If that happens I don't think many will care.

The Fleck Haters cannot give him a break on this.... it's their life's passion to continue their vendetta.

With PE on this one - there's a disconnect if you preach honesty and integrity, then demonstrate a casual relationship with the truth!
And no, not a PJ hater, but if you ask me to subordinate numerous, long-held traditions for your personal program, you better walk the talk without flaw.

Stick in there Spoofin', I enjoy your contributions.

In the words of Jim Mora: What’s that? Ah — Progress? Don’t talk about — progress? You kidding me? Progress? I just hope we can win a game! Another game.
Saying there was progress on the field last year is a joke. We'd be looking at a 1-2 win season if we show the same "Progress" this year. Talk all you want about the recruiting progress, but on the field we regressed. The spring game was good, but then again, with the limited roster the year before spring game was good as well.
This is exactly what Spoofin was referring to in post #18

NONE of PJ's banter would be annoying to me, if he didn't make such a big deal of his culture and then in so many ways not follow it himself. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wwH2IGCmlec If you want to just skip to Farmers Alliance at 1:28 it's hilarious, you can't make it up.

Forgot about these vignettes. You nailed it. I also wonder where the King of the "toos" has gone...

Well, the PJ worshippers win. This is my post # 10,784 and it will be my last. I feel sorry for those that believe blindly in this fraud and it isn't fun for me anymore to debate with them. I pity those that defend the crap he spews as many have for each of the examples I have listed above - and there are many more examples. I don't expect this to break any hearts as my goal has never been to be popular on here - just to post my thoughts and have fun. I'm not anymore, so I won't anymore.

Good riddance to you. I can't think of any other poster whose disappearance would have added more to the ability of everyone else to enjoy reading and posting in GopherHole. Even posters who most other posters hate (like me) add some value to this site every once in awhile. You have never added anything to GopherHole but your stupid attempts at getting cheap laughs at another poster's expense. Here's hoping you keep your promise.

The truth whether delivered by Spoof or whomever sure seems to bring out the venom. I’d wager a good portion of browsers enjoy Spoofin’s wicked sense of humor.

Those two things have nothing to do with one another. I have been asking about the numbers coach has been throwing out for weeks/months. If he were aware of transfers why hasn’t that become public knowledge? The statement of 9* isn’t a big deal, but if he’s fibbing (I don’t know) it would be part of a larger pattern of behavior that began very early on. You can choose to not pick up on it but it doesn’t mean it isn’t fair game.

My question is what benefit is there to him openly lying about it?

My guess is he’s trying to talk down expectations. Every coach does it. Like I said in my first post in this thread - where is the 9 coming from? Nobody seems to know about anyone quitting/transferring. Maybe Gibson? Now we’re at 10. Weyler retiring? Could be. If he’s talking about specific numbers that don’t make sense it would be nice to know why.

"Hi, I'm Shorty and I'm a Hole-aholic........"

Well said and that was my message to bud kraeling.

In basically every college football preview I've ever read, authors will reference 6 of 11 starters returning on offense, or 9 of 11 returning on defense. Or 18 of 22 starters returning. Has anyone ever seen someone reference a number higher than this? Do kick returners count? Or the middle guy on punt coverage? Or the holder? Everyone is important, but discussions usually center around the 11 guys on offense and defense. Sorry to offend...

We shall see when the special teams lose or win games.

I'm with you here. PJ says things all the time that aren't factually correct. Often just an exaggeration, but always just what he thinks people want to hear. Why even say it? Took a pay cut, focus on 8 hour radius, lots of open practices (people's team), was a grade school teacher, 9 Senior scholarships, etc. Dude is a windbag. Plain & Simple.

What you did wrong here is you called him out on it. That is no longer allowed here on GH. It makes you a "fan". Dah.

SON - thanks so much for posting these weekly updates (& DL before you). Best part of the site - I get to keep up w/o having to listen to PJ talk out loud. I will still read these every week for that reason. Thanks Again. Go Gophers!

Yes, a great way to start a week, Spoofin (aka Fat Reusse) is no longer going to post

It could be letting guys finish their school year and graduate before announcing departures

Agree people are very thin-skinned and can't wait to pounce on any possible mis-statement

Is having 11 scholarship seniors vs 9 really going to change the narrative and or expectations for the upcoming season? The.point is the team will be.relying on a lot of underclassmen, especially at offense skill positions.

Yup... more to his posts that meets the eye....

Bingo. Part of the "young and inexperienced" narrative. Just win.

I tend to agree. There is little to nothing about attending a game or watching on TV that requires you to listen to the head coach talk. There are pretty easy solutions for people who don't like listening to him - mute button, change the channel, or don't seek out his press conferences online. Coaches usually don't say much and PJ is no different. You can read the notes about what he said that people post on here, and you won't be out of the loop as far as injury updates, roster news, etc.

Seems to me that PJ probably was only speaking to the offense and defensive sides of the ball, I know it's a leap on my part. No reason to think he is disingenuous in his statement, pretty certain he knows exactly is scholarship situation.

Like WHB Brewer said, is there really that much difference between 9 or 11? Either way, that's a fairly small number. He doesn't achieve anything more by saying 9 instead of 10 or 11.

So it's ok for you to rip on him and dance on his grave but it's not ok for him to make jokes?

Spoofin can just follow PJ's lead and start posting again anytime he wants. :p

Somebody explain the 9 scholarship statement - seems like that’s not correct.

Well, that’s disingenuous and factually incorrect. Special teams is obviously crucial to team success and specialists are people too. One of the things that others me a bit is his propensity for overstating things. The mark of a salesman and a good bull****ter, yes, but I’d prefer reality and straight talk.

Any scholly grid that forgets Blake Cashman is...suspect. Details, people. They’re important. Should
I be concerned?

So...you guys are doubling down on this.

It’s possible but would seem cruel and unusual since we’re under the limit and those guys do play quite a bit in very important roles.

Seem more likely PJ wants to make it sound like he has a higher hilll to climb than he really does, so if the team face plants he can point to the lack of experience. IMO just say the team is inexperienced and stop with the misleading schaolarship count and wacked percentages.

You know it's early May, right?
