To have a coach that kept the top MN recruit in MN?

The last time we lost a top recruit that we wanted in-state was Jashon Cornell in 2015.

Might want to check your list again.

Carter Coughlin wasn't the top-rated MN recruit? Hmm. That's strange, given that he's the highest-rated recruit to come out of MN in several years.

Sorry read your post wrong, I thought you were saying it didn't happen those years. Yes Coughlin was the top recruit. Where is this years top recruit going?

Assuming Quinn doesn't flip to the U and your data is correct, we are batting less than .500. We have the top rated in-state recruit 4 of 9 years and 4 of 10 going back to 2010 (Henderson).

People just need to settle down a bit, Fleck just recruited and signed the highest rated class in Minnesota history (in the internet era).

He got those elite linemen from Florida...do you think the Florida State or Florida fans are all up in arms about those kids coming up north to Minnesota??

When your program has been down as long as Minnesota has, it's going to take some time to re-build the culture and create a tradition of winning. Look at where Wisconsin was in the 1980's and early 1990's and where they are now.

Minnesota was in the running for Carroll right until the last few weeks, in past years, Minnesota would not have even been considered at this point. We just need Fleck and the coaching staff to continue to recruit hard and hopefully they can carry that over on to the field and we start seeing more wins.

Stop sounding reasonable - there's no place for that here. I want the best now! If we don't get it, I want a new coach every 3-5 years!

From 2013 to 2018 here are the results of how many top rated recruits stayed with their in state school in the BIG:
Iowa: 2 of 6
Illinois: 0 of 6
Maryland: 1 of 6
Michigan: 5 of 6
MSU: 1 of 6
Minnesota: 3 of 6
OSU: 4 of 6
PSU: 2 of 6
Wisc: 4 of 6

Yep, current coach is working very hard and recruiting is trending in the right direction.

Not getting the top MN recruits is not a death sentence.

What is more important, is are we recruiting top notch athletes who want to be here? If we get top MN athletes that is a big bonus.

MN is is in the Dead Zone of recruiting talent, and must do whatever it takes to get the best recruiting classes. We are going to get good athletes from the Midwest and the South to offset any MN talent that we lose or don't have. I am really excited about WDE Harris and CB Nubin from Illinois.

This incorrect perception is exactly what is wrong with the Gopher fan base.

A fans perception of recruiting is what's wrong with our fan base?! It has nothing to do with an aging population? Or that most have never gone to a game outside of Mpls so they don't know what a real atmosphere is like? Or that they they'd rather sit than yell and get loud? Or that they stop showing up for games in November?

We have many things wrong with our fan base, a perception of recruiting is hardly at the top.

Right, but if at any point he misses the top rated in-state recruit, he automatically becomes a failure and needs to be fired immediately.

It’s a shame Kill and Claeys weren’t able to recruit well enough to give PJ the players he needs to win right away

Thanks for doing this. Puts things into perspective. The Iowa number was really surprising.

Brewster's 2008 and 2009 classes were better. More importantly, Flecks class was better than Wisconsin's or Iowa's.

Bottom line - and this goes for all sports - I want the Gophers to recruit guys who can play and help the team win.

if some of them are from MN, great.

but - if the Gophers win 10 games - AND they do it without any MN players in the starting lineup, is anyone going to complain? Bleep, no.

If the Gophers win a B1G title, and they do it without any MN players in the lineup, is anyone going to complain? Again, no.

This thread is exactly the type of thing that fans complain about when the team isn't winning enough games.

Now, obviously, the Gophers are going to have local kids on the team. Most years, they will have local kids starting. But, if the coaches have to choose between two players for a scholarship offer, I want them to take the more talented kid or the better player every time, whether it says MN on their birth certificate or not.

I agree and would add that you want players who want to be Gophers as well.

That is a great list btw, 3 out of 4 years. So far PJ is 0 for 1, let's see if he can go 3 straight.

How is he 0 for 1?

He signed Andries in 2017 - the top rated player in the state. 1/1
Alston was the top-rated player in the state last year, but we didn't offer. We received commitments from all 5 in-state players we offered (Spann-Ford, Sapp, Richter, Aune, and Boe).

No one in the 2019 class has actually signed yet, so he's 1/2 at worst or 2/2 depending on if you want to use Alston in your calculation.

Andries committed to the gophers almost a whole year before PJ was hired.

Coaches get credit for players they sign - it doesn't matter when he committed. If he didn't like Fleck he had plenty of other options. Fleck still had to recruit him to get his signature.

It absolutely does matter when he committed. He had been committed to our program for almost a whole year before Fleck even came into the picture. He was recruited and locked down by the previous coaches.

We cooled on the others?

Plenty of players de-commit after a coaching change. Fleck gets credit for Andries in my book.
