per Marcus:

Gophers athletic director Mark Coyle said he conducted three interviews for the women’s basketball coaching job this week, but only one of the candidates was a home run hire.

Coyle knew when he convinced former University of Minnesota All-America pick and current Lynx point guard Lindsay Whalen to take the job on Wednesday that it meant an instant recruiting jolt for the program.

“There’s not a living room she won’t be able to get into,” Coyle said at Whalen’s introductory news conference. “I watched her transform the state during her career here at Minnesota. Who she is and not only how she represents this institution, but the Lynx and the state of basketball in Minnesota — she is the Mount Rushmore.”

The emphasis on bringing in more talent to the Gophers is shared by Whalen, who recognizes how strong the state of Minnesota continues to be at the high school level.

“There are a ton of great players in this state,” she said Friday. “We’re going to do our best to make sure those players are wanting to stay home. It should be a fun and good challenge.”

Made her first offer to a Minnesota player yesterday. That didn’t take long

Yes, that is Gail Striegler next to her. Both Gail and Marty are still under contract (reportedly into June). So, as she doesn't officially have any assistants yet, and Gail and Marty haven't "left", not surprising to see Gail with her. And, even though everyone seems to have believed the former staff never visited local teams, they actually did.

How many assistants will Whalen have?

We've typically had three assistants, based on past history of this program. Both Pam and Marlene had three. The pot of money available for assistant salaries for Whalen to use has been reported to be $750,000.

Yes, the NCAA limit is three coaching assistants. You can also have grad assistants (something we haven't done). As noted elsewhere, in addition to the DOBOs, teams are adding non-coaching assistants concentrating on various tasks.

Maybe Gail wants to stay around.

CONSIDERING
Arkansas Razorbacks, Missouri Tigers, Ole Miss Rebels, Texas Longhorns, Mississippi State Bulldogs, Kansas Jayhawks, SMU

Probably a Thibault recruit if Mississippi State is on her list.

Probably, although Minnesota had previously offered a 2019 Arkansas 6'-0" forward, Marquesha Davis.

Coming off a junior season in which she averaged a double-double with 20.9 points and 10.4 rebounds, Springdale's Marquesha Davis was also named to the first team. The Class of 2019 standout has offers from Arkansas, Georgia Tech, Indiana, Kentucky, Minnesota, Oklahoma State and Texas A&M, among other Division I programs.
