per Broback:

Rodney Smith and Tyler Johnson are special players.
Smith enters his final year at running back and showed fans why he’s a leader and a special talent. Starting the scoring off with a nice 56-yard catch and run in the first quarter, he added a seemingly effortless 31 yard run in the second. Smith is looking to make his final season the best one yet, and his teammate is looking to do the same. Johnson also reminded fans that he has a ton of potential, finishing with six catches for 120 yards and two touchdowns. The highlight of the spring game was this phenomenal one-handed grab.

The quarterback battle is still up for grabs.
Tanner Morgan, Vic Viramontes, and Zack Annexstad all played quarterback in the spring game, and we saw some good from all three. Annexstad found Smith for the first touchdown and got the start for the Gold team over Viramontes. The JUCO transfer came in, and showed why he’s going to be a dangerous dual threat, but only completed one pass. Morgan ran the Maroon team by himself and led all passers with 272 yards and two touchdowns. Morgan and Viramontes appeared to be the front runners coming into this game, but Annexstad showed some potential as well. It’s safe to say this competition will be open for a while until one of the players commands to starting spot. Fleck also indicated how one of them can separate themselves.

P.J. Fleck continues to make scholarship awards special.
Play stopped during the first quarter, and there was some confusion until everyone looked up at the scoreboard. On it, defensive lineman Sam Renner was being told he would be awarded a scholarship. Renner was a walk-on from Maple Grove, Minnesota, and his teammates swarmed him after reading the announcement themselves. Not only did Renner get a scholarship, but he will be in the mix at defensive line this year. It was another great moment for Fleck to celebrate a young man’s hard work.
