Assistant Coaches and Staff

A bit more on Carly Thibault from her EMU days.

Over more than 35 years of professional coaching, Carly’s dad has made a lot of connections, and Carly used those connections to land her first job in the business as Florida State’s Director of Recruiting Operations in 2013, right after graduating from Monmouth University.

“He [Mike Thibault] coached one of the assistant coaches there, Brooke Wyckoff,” Thibault said. “I’ve known her since I was probably 12 years old, so that was a really good situation for me, and he knew [head coach] Sue Semrau was a phenomenal person, let alone a great coach.”

EMU women’s basketball head coach Tory Verdi was an assistant for the WNBA’s Connecticut Sun when Mike was the head coach there, and when Verdi needed to fill an assistant coaching vacancy for the Eagles he called Mike to see if Carly would be interested.

“My dad was like, ‘Well just call her, and talk to her about it.’ Coach Verdi brought me up on an interview, and the rest is history,” Thibault remembered. “They’ve known each other for a really long time. I actually met Coach Verdi when he was working for my dad.”

She looks pretty impressive. Recruiting for Florida State (they have big time recruits coming through every year) is a very big plus on the resume and Lindsay certainly knows the family quite well. This might be the great first hire we are hoping for.

Sounds like Carly Thibault-DuDonis as an assistant to the gophers is all but done. Put me in the camp of someone who is thrilled about it! I think a fantastic assistant coach hire.

Just what Lindsay Whalen needed. A good assistant with a coaching pedigree and MN connection.

Carly's dad who coached the WNBA Connecticut Sun and now with the Washington Mystics was from Saint Paul, MN.

Look for Roysland to be on staff soon.

Kiara Buford would great to get as Dir of Ops she is obviously an up and coming coach.
I agree with this assesment, hope it comes true about Buford.

While Carly and Kelly are great up and comers, I still think an old-pro should be hired, too.

Kelly Roysland will be a great hire. Watching her on the sidelines at Macalester, she still has the same intensity she did as a Gopher. I well remember her at a Gopher golf outing when she was still a player where she had just had her wisdom teeth pulled and she still attended the event and drove the ball farther than anyone else did. She's also got the coaching genes through her parents. She'll continue to make Fosston, MN proud. Looking forward to see who the other two assistants will be, but this is good start.

(and no, I'm not a relative of Kelly's!)

I really liked Gail Striegler on Marlene's staff. Seemed to bring stability and is a seasoned coach. Curious if she will remain on staff or perhaps go to Tech? thoughts?

Stollings adds Larry Tidwell as Chief of Staff. There's still one coaching position open joining Nikki Dawkins and Erin Grant.

Might of gotten an answer about third assistant. Gophersports.com finally removed the DOBO that went with Stollings but also removed Marty. Gail Striegler still remains listed on there. Assistants Roysland, Carly Thibault-DuDonis and Gail. My only question is who will be the post coach?

Why hasn't Carly Thibault-DuDonis joining Whalen's staff not announced yet? It sounded on GH that it is a done deal.

Heard at the softball game on Saturday that she definitely will be on staff. For what its worth, she has recently added Kelly Roysland and the three incoming recruits to people she is following on Twitter.

I have a feeling they are waiting for the new DOBO and S&T coach and announce all 4 at the same time.

Hopefully they hire a really good defensive-minded assistant coach.

I wonder if Whalen's approach to strength and conditioning will have a noticeably lower volume than Ralph's:

I hope not. I'm a bit fan of the weight room and it's ability to fully change your athletic function. I like that he's not just having them solely crush out traditional lifts but using movements with more athletic function to them.

I wouldn't mind see our athletes in more of a crossfit-style training when it comes to the weight room. Lots of mobility, lots of power lifting....

In case you have not seen these:

Whalen Finalizes Staff With Danielle O'Bannion

Correct me if I am wrong. They still have one staff positions to fill and designating the associate head coach?
Assistant to the Head Coach-Women's Basketball - Will this role be filled by Danielle O'Bannion?

Athletics Operations Director-Women's Basketball - Will Whalen hire someone like former teammate Kiara Buford or go elsewhere to find someone with more experience?

The assistant to the head coach is an administrative position. That is not a role that would be filled by a coach. They in essence run the "office" side and it is actually a paid hourly position according to the job description.

Athletics Operations Director is the job we more commonly hear called Director of Basketball Operations or DOBO.

I believe the DOBO is the only position remaining. There is no need to designate an associate head coach.

I see that Sara Wiley's bio includes basketball among her strength and conditioning responsibilities. If I remember correctly, she was the WBB strength and conditioning coach until Stollings brought in Ralph. She also works with volleyball. I don't know if there is going to be a dedicated WBB coach or whether Sara will have primary responsibility.

The roster has been updated with no surprises.

While I don't see the job posting any longer on the U of M site, the assistant to the head coach job would also still be "open". That person runs the basketball office and does a lot of the scheduling of the head coach. It is possible they have a candidate and it has not been announced. That role was filled most recently by Ben Dolezal, who left the program in January. He had that role for about 18 months, but when Tanisha Agustin was injured, he filled in as a coach. Prior to Ben, it was Adam Marso for about two years. If you go back far enough.....people like Patsy Kahman, Deb Diamond and Brittany Edwards filled the role. It is an important role to fill.

Based on information I've seen elsewhere, Garrett Solis is now the assistant to the head coach. He was with assistant coaches O'Banion and Thibault-DuDonis at the Lynx exhibition game at the Target Center. He was the video specialist under the prior administration. I would expect that gophersports.com will reflect the new role at some point soon. That leaves the Director of Basketball Operations (DOBO) job to still fill along with the strength coach to still be named.

Here's the link to Garrett that is currently on the roster:

Director of Ops about to be named...

Director of Ops has a ton of experience with a very familiar school.

Just drop the suspense and spill the beans. This is what GH is for.

Was my glib guess correct? Is it Borton?

Nothing my beloved U of M athletics department would surprise me any more, but I just can't see Pam coming back for that role. She'd have to leave an apparently very successful executive coaching business and leave her spouse at Penn State to take on this role. I just don't see her moving down to that role for what the DOBO does. Nonetheless, until they unveil the DOBO, anything is possible.
