Recap, Top Performers: United Stars Showcase
WILLOWBROOK, Ill. -- A talent-laden camp was held in Illinois with kids from Florida, Georgia, Michigan, Missouri, Indiana, Minnesota, and more coming in and competing.
Allen Trieu - Mar 25, 11:49 AM

Alpha Dog
St. Louis (Mo.) Lutheran North offensive lineman Jack Buford had an excellent day at the camp. He showed the athleticism to mirror defensive linemen, but also the strength to keep them at bay and the tenacity to finish reps. There were some observers at the camp who thought he might be a high-level guard one day, but he pass protected well enough to play inside or out. After bursting onto the scene as a junior, we needed to see him against top competition, and he showed why he has a long list of offers.

Top Offensive Performers

- Oak Park (Mich.) offensive lineman Justin Rogers was right there with Buford as a top performer and MVP candidate. He stone-walled several would-be defenders and drove others out of reps. He did nothing to diminish his standing as a top 60 national prospect in the 2020 class.

- Belleville (Mich.) offensive lineman Sherod Green has been very good at several offseason camps and that continued here. He is strong and a tenacious finisher. He also looks like he is getting in better shape. All that leads us to believe the sophomore’s recruitment is about to rise.

- Buffalo (Minn.) wide receiver Treyton Welch has strong junior film, but we wanted to see him on this stage against good competition and he left the event as a name camp coaches were talking about. He created separation, but also showed the same sure-hands we saw on tape.

Top Defensive Performers

- Belleville (Mich.) defensive tackle Jalen Bell continued his very strong offseason by impressing here. He was rarely beaten in one-on-ones and won several in impressive fashion. Realizing that he is not the prototype size wise, it is becoming increasingly clear that he can play at more schools than his offer list would indicate.

- Belleville (Mich.) sophomore cornerback Andre Seldon requested to be put against the camp’s best receivers, and he answered the call, using his speed and aggressiveness to win the reps.

- Recent Boston College commit Marvin Ham completed the day of dominance for Belleville as he was one of the top linebackers, and got his hands on a couple passes.

Other Notable Performers

- On the defensive line, in addition to Bell, camp coaches identified Southfield (Mich.) Bradford Academy’s Victor Nelson, Ecorse (Mich.) sophomore Michael Sessoms, a powerful young prospect, Chicago (Ill.) Brother Rice's explosive sophomore Justin Jefferson, and Will Anderson of Hampton (Ga.) Dutchtown as the top five.

We also thought Southfield (Mich.) junior Devin Baldwin had a good day. He won with outside speed rushes as well as quick counter moves to the inside. Chicago De La Salle’s Steven Hawthorne won with speed as well. We did see that he needs to get stronger as some of the top offensive linemen were able to control him with strength, but Hawthorne still has the length and twitch to be a high-level edge rusher. St. Louis (Mo.) DeSmet Jesuit sophomore Lanell Carr had good reps, showing the quickness to get around would-be blockers. A multi-offer guy, Jalen Hunt's speed and burst always make him tough to handle. D'Vion Harris, another multiple offer guy, used his quickness and athleticism to win reps.

Other top performers on the defensive line include Minnetonka duo of junior Samaje Finch Garrett and sophomore Carvon Gurley, Oak Park (Mich.) juniors Markel Alexander and Dondi Price, St. Louis (Mo.) Vianney Nate Thurman, Detroit Cass Tech defensive end Clarence Wilson, and a 6-foot-7 sleeper from Chicago Perspectives in Dominic Moore. Miami Beach edge-rusher Jerry Williams and Ecorse (Mich.) junior Shandon Smith were also tough to handle in one-on-ones. St. Louis (Mo.) Cardinal Ritter sophomore Joe Moore is going to be a big-time prospect as he has a big 6-foot-5 frame and already has a Syracuse offer.

- On the offensive line, in addition to the two aforementioned, strong performances were turned in by Okemos (Mich.) center Broderick Jordan, Farmington Hills (Mich.) Harrison tackle Maverick Hansen, Bolingbrook (Ill.) guard/center Alex Parades, and Chicago (Ill.) De La Salle’s Daniel White. Jordan convinced observers he should be playing big time college football despite the lack of offers. Hansen camped as a defensive lineman last we saw him, but showed a lot of potential as an offensive tackle. Alex Solak of Menasha (Wis.) was one of the few offensive linemen who had any success against Bell and was willing to continually compete against the best defenders at the camp. He did not win every single rep, but we liked his willingness to compete. Derek Harden from Lawrenceville (Ga.) Archer was a kid we marked down on several good reps. Flushing (Mich.) junior William Racely, a multiple offer guy, had some good reps as well. Although hampered some by an injury, St. Louis (Mo.) DeSmet Jesuit's Marquise Simmons also had good reps.

Detroit Cass Tech sophomore Craig Rush is a massive, strong prospect who emerged on Saturday. Belleville (Mich.) tackle Coleon Smith has a ton of upside and potential as well. Trevon Roberts of Cass Tech and Florida native Ronaldo Sigers also deserve mention.

In the freshman class, Belleville (Mich.) blue-chipper Damon Payne continues to show he has the bend, flexibility, and overall skill set to continue adding to his list of major offers which already includes Michigan, Penn State, Florida State, etc. East English Village Prep’s Davion Weatherspoon and Detroit Cass Tech’s Raheem Anderson are two freshmen center types who have had good camps this offseason and had some good reps here.

One 8th grader, Jakobe Watkins, who will be at Ecorse (Mich.), impressed and surprised many that he was as young as he was based on his technique and success in competing against older players.

- Quarterbacks were a little bit tough to evaluate based on reps, but there were some obvious arms in attendance. Detroit Renaissance sophomore Raequan Beal might have had the biggest gun there. He has great velocity on his passes. Antioch (Ill.) freshman Athan Kaliakmanis also spins it well and when you add in his frame and maturity, you can see why a couple schools have already offered.

Michigan State commit Dwan Mathis has impressed us this offseason and continues to throw the ball well.

St. Louis (Mo.) Hazelwood East’ Mekhi Hagens keeps getting taller and he spun it really well at the event. He has always had natural arm talent, but mechanics continue to improve and physical maturity is noticeable as well.

Plymouth (Minn.) Wayzata’s Marco Lopesio and Chicago Brooks’ D.J. Cotton are two rising seniors who categorize as sleepers right now who threw well. Cotton is a big, tall prospect who delivered accurate passes. Lopesio, by comparison, is not as towering as Cotton, but has been confident, consistent, and accurate at the last two camps we have seen him at. Another junior who is under the radar but has size and a big arm is Justin McCown of Sterling Heights (Mich.) Stevenson.

Two more young prospects to watch are Southfield (Mich.) sophomore Anthony Romphf, who holds an early Akron offer, and Machesney Park (Ill.) Harlem freshman James Cooper, who has the athleticism and skills to be highly-recruited as his process moves along.

- Defensive back MVPs as chosen by the camp also included Terrance Brown, a junior from Ecorse (Mich.), Gerard Tate, a junior from Walled Lake (Mich.) Western, Chicago Simeon’s Marquae Kirkendoll, and Minneapolis North’s Omar Brown. Grand Blanc (Mich.) junior Kortez Toles continues to impress this offseason with his size and cover skills. Homewood (Ill.) Flossmoor's Wynston Russell and Harper Woods (Mich.) native Jordan Anderson, who both have D1 offers, also impressed.

We also really liked Minehaha Academy’s Craig McDonald, a sophomore who is highly-regarded. Minneapolis Holy Angels freshman Jeff Robinson Jr., St. Louis (Mo.) Cardinal Ritter Keith Jones, Oak Park (Mich.) sophomore Enzo Jennings, Belleville (Ill.) East’s Aubrey Parker, and a California native, Upland’s Caleb Roberson, a long, track kid, were other standouts at the position. Westland (Mich.) John Glenn cornerback Dante Barthwell was identified by the coaches as well.

Southfield (Mich.) safety Marcus Fuqua, a multiple offer guy, had several good reps as did Clinton Township (Mich.) Chippewa Valley Javon Kimpson.

Hammond (Ind.) Morton’s Cassius Waite, Alpena (Mich.) native Logan Guthrie, who is big and fast, Detroit Cass Tech sophomore Daniel Wynn, and Homewood (Ill.) Flossmoor’s Charlie Brooks. Sterling Heights (Mich.) junior Ahmad Abboud had a good day and is getting steady college interest. Farmington (Mich.) sophomore Jordan Turner has a high-level frame and potential. Southfield (Mich.) sophomore Cardeia Harris had some good reps.

- Running Back MVPs as chosen by the camp included Sha’mel Morrow from St. Louis (Mo.) Cardinal Ritter, Isaac Glenn and Jalen Head both from St. Louis (Mo.) Lutheran North, Kyle Mill from Chesterfield (Mo.) Marquette, Chicago Urban Prep-Bronzeville freshman Dawone Johnson. Anwar Jackson and Torriano Richardson both came from Michigan and had good days. Richardson was limited by an injured hand, but still had a good performance. Teely Rhyne, a senior who will head to prep school, is a good-sized prospect who has lot of schools following along as he heads to Avon Old Farms. Antioch (Ill.) product Ben Naumann is a kid who caught our eyes as a sleeper.

- At wide receiver, the biggest name was St. Louis (Mo.) Cardinal Ritter’s Jameson Williams, who did not disappoint. He is a smooth and fast kid who showed that athletic quality during one-on-ones. Detroit Renaissance’s 6-foot-4 Christopher Robinson had a good day. Bolingbrook (Ill.) sophomore Marques Buford always comes to play and was his usual competitive self at this event.

The Minneapolis contingent of Adrian Adams, Thai Bowman, and Julian Cavin, were all named by camp coaches as being among the top performers in the group.

Antioch (Ill.) sophomore Dino Kaliakmanis is a great route-runner with sure hands. Jaxson Ramsey, a smaller slot from Florida came up and showed excellent route-running skills and quickness as well.

Walled Lake (Mich.) Western’s Malcomb Baker, Southfield (Mich.) sophomore Arron Foulkes, and Clarkston (Mich.) product Nino Mastromatteo all did well from Michigan.

We also liked St. Louis (Mo.) Trinity Catholic freshman Demetrius Cannon, Fort Wayne (Ind.) Concordia’s Kamari Anderson-Drew, and Austin Lester, who came from Hampton (Va.) Bethel. St. Louis (Mo.) DeSmet Jesuit freshman Rashod Smith-Harvey is very explosive and quick, and will be a kid that draws a lot of looks the next few years.
