Former Gophers assistant coach Dan O’Brien is St. Thomas Academy’s new football coach, the school announced Wednesday.

O’Brien spent last season as an assistant coach at St. Agnes after spending years with the Gophers football program, where he served in positions ranging from director of football operations to senior associate athletic director to defensive backs coach.

O’Brien, a University of St. Thomas alum, has previous head coaching experience at Bemidji High School and Concordia-St. Paul. He has been an athletic director at Concordia-St. Paul and Hamline.

“Given his deep resume in coaching and operations, we are thrilled to have Dan lead our football program,” St. Thomas Academy activities director Bob Slater said in a statement. “Our persistence and patience in conducting an exhaustive search of candidates were rewarded when Dan accepted the position. We are confident he will sustain the level of excellence and the tradition for which Cadets football is known.”

Go Gophers!!

Good for him. I always got the impression that Dan when he was in the athletic department was the buffer between Jerry and ... the university, but it was clear he wanted to coach.

Great guy and solid recruiter/coach; wish he was still at U in some capacity.
