The Next Step: Gophers' Carlie Wagner eyeing WNBA career

She must be having fun since she's smiling in the several team pictures @cdzamarat ( http://cadenaser00.epimg.net/ser/im...513875_1539461223_noticia_normal_recorte1.jpg , https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DpYNjLsWwAAhSEw.jpg:large , https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DpUT99uXgAEra1p.jpg:large , https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DpTmM6PW0AI3fZV.jpg , https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DpaqiOdWsAICfGD.jpg:large , https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DpabejUW0AE2-jm.jpg:large , https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DpAs7FxX4AA9n0s.jpg:large ).

But they lost to Araski by 4 points in their first official game, in spite of Carlie tieing team-mate Laura Quevedo for high-point scorer at 17 points each. Here's the somewhat stilted Google translation of the caption on the first link above:

"The Zamarat Quesos El Pastor has begun its journey this season in Liga Día (Division of Women's Honor) with defeat to Araski, 69-65 (note: "defeat to" means "defeated by").

Despite the good start of Fran Garcia (13-9 in the first quarter), came to rest with equality on the scoreboard (27-26), and in the third quarter the Vitoria were ahead with a lead of five points (45-50) that they knew how to keep until the end.

Laura Quevedo and Carlie Wagner were the top scorers in the orange box, with 17 points each. This time Chelsea Nelson stayed at 10, and they certainly missed their points. Interestingly it was the base Aleksandra Stanacev the maximum rebounder, and by far (11 rebounds)

After the Open Day, which is being played this weekend in Torrejón, on the second day the Zamarat will move to Lugo to face the Ensino, next Wednesday, at 20.45."

(No mention of Carlie but) if you want an even bigger "translation laugh" then paste the next post ( https://www.laopiniondezamora.es/deportes/2018/10/13/quesos-pastor-rozo-triunfo-64/1116578.html ) into Google Translate.

There is an hour-long video at https://twitter.com/i/broadcasts/1MnxnZMQlaoxO (or mobile.twitter... for smart phone) that is pretty boring (some kind of pre-season celebration or something), but if you fast forward to 19:00, Carlie's team is presented as they walk onto the stage. Other league teams are presented as well. With many of us Gopher fans born in Minnesota/Scandinavian territory, it's a bit surprising to see how many 5'2" guards play in the top-level Spanish women's professional basketball league. I suppose that back home, Irene Garrido Perez (at 6'1") might well be playing Center, instead of Small Forward.

Since this thread is somewhat International/Spanish, I'll note that the Spanish national team won the Bronze at the FIBA World Cup. Ex-Lynx guard Anna Cruz ( https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anna_Cruz ) played for Spain. Australia took the Silver, beating Spain to enter the FIBA final for the 2nd time ever. Liz Cambage had some interesting comments about the Australia/Spain rivalry and the need to promote womens' basketball in general ( http://www.fiba.basketball/en/women...ews/cambage-disrespect-dunking-griner-and-usa ). As expected, USA took the Gold Cup. Stewie was FIBA MVP, repeating her achievement as WNBA/Finals MVP.

Thanks for posting this update. I was hopeful she might end up with the Lynx as a back up guard.

She may still come back.

I don’t think it’s too likely, to be honest. Maybe she’ll get a camp invite, but there will only be one guard spot open next year (vacated by Whalen). If the Lynx pick a guard at #6, Wagner definitely won’t make the team (unless there’s a surprise retirement by Augustus or Wright), no matter how improved she might be. If the Lynx don’t draft a guard at #6 (which is my hope since they really need post players), then they’ll draft at least one guard with the #16, #18, and #20 picks. That’s a good area for Kenisha Bell to get drafted, and I suspect Reeve has fallen in love with her, watching her as a season ticket holder for the last couple of years.

35-32 Zamarat at the half. Wagner sat the second half of the second period.

They are not passing to an open Carlie. Finally! A 3 pointer at 8:05! A second 3-pointer at 7:27!

73-71 Final. Another close loss for Zamarat. Stats will show up later.

A 2 point loss in OT, but not for lack of effort by Carlie. She was top scorer with 20 points on 57% shooting, including 3/6 from deep. 6 rebounds and 3 assists.

Carlie had her first Spanish presser ( https://twitter.com/Zamora24horas/status/1052304875525160961 and https://www.zamora24horas.com/texto...juego-espana-cuando-vienes-liga-universitaria ).

Notes say something like (although comments by Ángel García sound more like pre-game comments, so maybe it was a pre-game presser) …

Carlie Wagner: "It's hard to adapt to the game in Spain when you come from a university league"

Ángel García:

The orange outside will play his second league match with CD Zamarat and believes that the team is ready to add the first victory. The American recognizes that she is noticing an important change between the university league and the professional one.
Room for improvement. The other day I think we did not play a bad game and we had chances to win. I think that the defensive issue is what is costing us the most. Situations like the one against one, the helps ... are basic things that we must continue working.

The most positive. From what I see in practice I think that in attack we are a good team, we have a lot of talent and players that can score. That can be one of our strengths.

Adaptation to the professional league. It is true that it is difficult to adapt to the game in Spain when you come from a university league and that is costing me. The main change is that in the university it is important to run more and have good physical condition, but in the professional league it is necessary to have more tactical, mental control and be well in the lead.

Wednesday duel We must try to continue doing well what we already did well the other day and improve the bad. Of the game against Araski I prefer that there were stages in which we executed the plays well, in defense we adjusted well ... They were streaks, and the important thing for this Wednesday is to maintain those good feelings for more minutes.

Comments say something like …

Orange effort in vain
Quesos El Pastor squandered a nine-point lead in the fourth quarter and gave in extra time to a fighter Durán Ensino Lugo

(photo caption: Wagner tries to leave one of his rivals for the bottom line.)

Quesos El Pastor yesterday fitted its second league defeat by falling 73-71 on the track of a Duran Ensino Lugo who knew how to resist the best minutes of orange play and overcome ten points of difference in the last quarter. An achievement with which the Galician forced an extension that was resolved in the last seconds against the set of Fran García.

He started the match with the first ball for a Duran Ensino Lugo who tried to assert the weight and height of his pivots in orange paint from the first moment. Thus, with Nyingifa as a standard, the Galicians quickly took advantage in the score, taking advantage of the first mistakes of El Pastor Cheese in not very fluid attacks.

Nelson put the first Zamora basket of the match to reduce a disadvantage that was alternating throughout the first quarter between the two and the four points. The difference seemed to stagnate in the first four minutes of the game and, although it was the locals who cut a period of failures in one area and another getting the 15-8 in the light, was the picture of Fran Garcia who better played the last minutes of the initial period.

Wagner warned with his first failed attempt of three the strategy that the oranges were going to follow to overcome. Circular the ball with speed and look for its exteriors to either penetrate or throw from the perimeter. A bet that, together with a significant improvement in the offensive rebound, allowed the visitors to gradually cut the differences. Stanacev from the free throw line and a penetration by Wagner put the score in a tight 15-12.

The Galicians tried to defend their small income but they were Ainhoa López first and Wagner later -just before honking the horn- who with their triples ended up taking Quesos El Pastor to come back before the second period (17-18).
Zamora's joy lasted what it took to start the second quarter. A period as balanced as it was the first although, this time, with Quesos El Pastor carrying the weight of the stake and also the front in the electronic.

They scored the Lucenses in the first action of the second quarter but Stanacev, with a big triple, showed that the oranges were going to sell expensive their position of privilege in the light. And so it was then, although Durán Ensino tried to filter both balloons to paint and penetrations, visitors found the formula to respond in the rival ring. A reverse of Nelson, for example (21-23, m.13),

The Galicians tried to climb a step the intensity of the crash taking advantage of its wide bench and, at times, managed to put in trouble to a Cheese El Pastor who gave his advantage from the free throw line from where Novo put the 24-23. Fortunately, the Zamarat found strength to react and with the visit of Laura Quevedo to the personnel line, her great connection with Nelson to score a good tray and another basket of the Pivot, the local revolution was stifled. Even more so when, minutes later, Stanecev took a beneficial "two plus one" that added to a counterattack put put Quevedo put the 32-35 with which came to rest.

Quesos El Pastor had set the meeting on track and would do so even more during a third glorious quarter. A period that opened with difficulties, since he was not able to score during his first two minutes, but in which he was very successful once Wagner plugged the first from beyond the line of three.

Duran Ensino tried to cut differences but Wagner was in a state of grace and, well escorted by a notable Stanecev and Ainhoa Lopez, the rent did nothing but increase (38-49, m.26).

The locals looked for points in actions of Nyingifa and Aliaga but the good defense of a Cheeses El Pastor that always attacked in a thoughtful way, prevented any local revolution. He could even give the "lace" the picture of Fran García to his rival with a shot of Lo Sylla but, yesterday, was totally unfortunate.

With 43-52 started the last quarter of the game and started the orange debacle. Lo Sylla missed the umpteenth ball under the basket and Duran Ensino got into the game with two free throws from Novo.

The Galicians, with more bench, took the duel to a more physical plane. They drowned the orange attack and little by little, they were cutting differences. Largely because Miller took the bounce in the Zamorano hoop and Duran Ensino got too many extra attacks.

The first cheese basket El Pastor arrived late, with a triple Stanacev that was 48-55. A basket that, like the subsequent great action of Wagner, did not prevent Durán Ensino from growing and the oranges were diluted until the last minute with the water around his neck.

The outcome was widely unfortunate because, despite losing the locals the option to tie the game on a free throws less than half a minute, the rebound was the last at the hands of Miller to put a 63-63 that Silk did not hit to avoid being alone in Galician painting two seconds from the final whistle. The failed was accompanied by the horn and 63-63 sent the game to overtime.

The five minutes of the extension had a script similar to the one lived during the match but with a more bitter outcome for Quesos El Pastor.

Ensino began scoring, the Zamora responded and went on to lead the scoring to subsequently re-flop and leave the game open for the last few bars. A few final moments in which Breedlove stood as a protagonist, putting the final 73-71 with a mid-distance shot without time for Quesos El Pastor to react.

Time to update what's going on with overseas players.

Several Lynx second-unit team members are playing overseas, and you can track them at this page https://lynx.wnba.com/news/lynx-overseas-tracker on the Lynx web site. Cici Zandalasini is playing in Turkey for Fenerbahce. Alexis Jones is playing for Hatay BSB, also in Turkey. Temi ***benle {Note: I spelled her real name correctly, but the editing program keeps blanking it out to asterisks, thinking it contains a swear word} is playing for CCC Polkowice in Poland, and is averaging about 15 points.

Also playing in Poland is Sydney Colson for Sleza Wroclaw. Readers may not be familiar with her - she effectively replaced D-Rob at the end of the season on a league-granted injury roster exception. D-Rob is still recovering from ankle surgery (a bit further along than Hubbard at this point), so Colson is effectively a replacement for Lindsay Whalen at the moment. But all that could change with off-season trades and/or next-spring's WNBA draft. Speaking of which, the Lynx have five draft spots including a number 6 pick. One mock draft https://www.draftsite.com/wnba/minnesota/160 has them picking one player for each position, including a 6' 9" Chinese center (who I've never heard of) and (with their #6 pick) shooting guard Katie Lou Samuelson from UConn.

Many of the veteran Lynx are planning on attending Lindsay's inaugural coaching game later this week - so that will be nice to have them in the stands with us. Thus it appears that none of the Lynx vets are playing overseas this year. I believe this includes Maya Moore, who last year came into camp late and a bit tired from winning the EuroLeague championship with UMMC Ekaterinburg along with many other WNBA All-Stars, including Diana Taurasi. This year's version of that team (https://basket.ugmk.com/en) is also well stocked with WNBA players, including Brittney Griner, Kayla McBride, Jamierra Fallkner, Courtney Vandersloot, Emma Meeseman, Jonquel Jones and Maria Vadeeva.

Last year, ex-Gopher Rachel Banham played overseas in Australia - finishing final stages of rehabbing her knee after surgery, and getting in shape for the just-finished WNBA season. But I don't think Rach is playing abroad this year - at least I see nothing about such on her Twitter stream. I honestly think she is just so excited to see her idol (and for a couple years, competitor) coaching the Gophers, that she just bought a season ticket, and will be relaxing in the stands with the rest of us. Rachel had a good WNBA season in which she had, I believe, 7 games scoring in double figures, including a 20-point game in which she shot 5-for-5 from deep. Overall she averaged 5.2 points and 1.5 assists per game during an average of 12.8 minutes played per game. This gives her Per-Nominal-36-Minute-Game ratings of 14.6 points and 4.2 assists. She also had .6 offensive rebounds, 2.0 defensive rebounds, 1.7 turnovers, .3 blocks and 1.4 steals per Nominal-36-Minute-Game. The Per-Nominal-36-Minute-Game statistics are intended to extrapolate second-unit players' statistics to show approximately what they would do if they had played a full game. Of course, as a Gopher, she often played 38 out of 40 minutes - so 36 minutes would be a short game for her. Rachel also shot 30/81 from downtown last season, giving her a .370 three-point percentage (and also a .481 two-point percentage, and a .868 free-throw percentage as well). She ranked in 19th place for regular-season three-point shooting percentage, right between ex-Lynx Renee Montgomery and Jewell Loyd https://www.wnba.com/league-leaders...easonType=Regular Season&StatCategory=FG3_PCT . That also puts her three slots behind Diana Taurasi, and two slots ahead of Maya Moore, the best Lynx trey shooter last year (at .365).

Ex-Gopher Amanda Zahui B. (AZB) is apparently playing in Hungary for Sopron (http://www.womensbasketball247.com/?s=amanda). She seems to be scoring well for that team. She had a good year playing for the New York Liberty with an increase in minutes and points scored. She averaged 7.7 points per game in 15.9 minutes per game. This gives AZB a Per-Nominal-36-Minute-Game rating of 17.4 points. She also had 2.9 offensive rebounds, 3.8 defensive rebounds, 1.6 assists, 3.4 turnovers, .9 blocks and .9 steals per Nominal-36-Minute-Game. Apparently, she needs to work on reducing the turnovers.

Finally, we check up on Carlie Wagner, who is playing professionally in Zamora, Spain for the team CD Zamarat (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CD_Zamarat - by the way, the Wiki needs an update to show Carlie on the roster). The status for Carlie seems to be a combination of good-news/bad-news/good-news. The first good news is that Carlie has been averaging about 15 points per game, and was recently ranked as the 8th best scorer in the Spanish "Liga Femenina de Baloncesto."

The bad news is that she apparently sustained a knee injury recently. But as near as I can tell, the second good news is that the injury was not too serious. It seems to have kept her out of practice/competition for perhaps only one game.

The following web page https://www.laopiniondezamora.es/deportes/2018/10/30/carlie-wagner-quesos-pastor-vuelve/1120544.html dated October 29 (and badly translated by Google) states ...

Carlie Wagner, from El Pastor Cheese, returns to training
The American has only one inflammation in the knee

Cheese player El Pastor Carlie Wagner will return to training tomorrow after confirming that the injury suffered in the knee is not serious because tests have shown that it is only an inflammation in the patellar tendon. Wagner could not play on Sunday in Salamanca and still remains the eighth top scorer in the league with 15 points on average.

In more recent news, their team was apparently badly defeated in a Nov. 3 home game:

The Cheese the Pastor @cdzamarat falls defeated at home to @GKesb by 40-73, in a bad match of the oranges.

I couldn't find any box score, so it's unclear whether Carlie's knee injury had healed well enough for her to play in that game. But I'm kind of doubting that she played, or maybe she played limited minutes, since if she had scored her usual 15 points, then one would think that the team would have scored more than 40 points. So we'll have to keep tuned to the Zamarat tweets to get updates.

Here's a fun news page for Carlie from back in September, at https://zamoranews.com/deporteszamo...forzara-el-tiro-exterior-del-quesos-el-pastor . It's badly Google-translated below, but judging from the pictures, I think the gist of it was that Toyota loaned Carlie a vehicle for the duration of her play in Spain - and thus reaped the advertising benefits:

Carlie Jo Wagner will reinforce the exterior shot of Quesos el Pastor

The CD Zamarat Quesos el Pastor presented this morning to the American Carlie Wagner an escort with averages more than important in his previous team and that will be a reference in the orange team this season.

The 23-year-old Minnesota-born American escort {shooting guard - a.k.a. escort to the point guard, get it?} made her college career at the Golden Gophers of that state's university, forging part of her career as a basketball player there. In his {her} figures an average 18.7 points with a percentage of 43.2% in shots of 2 and 41.2% in shots of 3 points and 4.6 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.4 average steals in the 33 games {s}he played give good account that this will be one of the players who put a point and separate in the orange team.

This morning it was officially presented at the Toyota dealership in the capital of Zamora, the sponsoring company of the club for several years. The American arrives to be one of the referents in the scoring capacity of the team that this year has been reinforced with a series of players of great quality but young and that the club expects to get good results in a complicated league that this year has been seen reinforced by many American players.

I don’t think Spain has been experience Wagner was hoping for, at least basketball-wise.

In this game, her team is down 32-2 after the first quarter. She’s being benched often, but I can’t say it’s all her fault. But the Americans are supposed to be the saviors to these overseas clubs. It’s just a bad team all-around.

Yeah, I see what you mean. I think they're in 2nd-to-last place or something like that. I think the Spanish league is just way spreadout in terms of talent. Turns out Carlie is one of the leaders of her team (at least until recently), but just not enough other pieces for the team to win against the leading Spanish teams. The American post player Chelsea Nelson is contributing too. And on any given game, one or more local players contribute - but very inconsistent who else contributes and how much. Pretty much, Carlie is the closest thing to a superstar that they have - and I'm not sure that the coaches are utilizing her as effectively as they could be. There might be some differences between Euro-style play and Gopher-style play that we just don't understand.

Scoring by quarters in game vs spar citylift girona ...

End of Q @unigirona @cdzamarat
1Q 32 2 (Their comment: It is not how it begins, but how it ends. Cheer up!! )
2Q 53 25
3Q 68 41
4Q 81 51

They lost by the first-quarter margin. So apparently how it ends is equal to how it begins. at least in this case.

I think this page https://www.cdzamarat.com/event/2924 is where the scoring is supposed to show up eventually, but has not arrived yet at the moment. This is a EuroBasket stats page https://basketball.eurobasket.com/team/Old_Dominion_University/8108?Page=3&Stats=2019 , and this game's stats have not shown up there yet either. But it does show that Carlie missed the game 2 games ago (knee) and only scored 2 points on the previous game.

I couldn't find a taped video of the game. Those guys have a nasty habit of posting ancient videos on their web page without bothering to post the date of the game. So no video, apparently - you gotta be there to stream it at the playing time.

I did manage to find Carlie's El Quesos team bio page though at https://www.cdzamarat.com/player/carlie-wagner - and at least they did a nice job on that.

There’s a two-week break in the schedule, so Wagner is home for Thanksgiving. Maybe that’s why she picked this league. I’m not sure all leagues have such a break. They definitely don’t celebrate American holidays.

Hopefully it’s not a permanent break. Wagner went from starter minutes to only 11 in her last game on Nov 11.

Looks like Wagner is not returning to Zamarat.

Carlie Wagner will not continue at El Pastor Cheese. As he has been able to know this means, the American escort has not returned after the break of this weekend and will leave the club after just one month of competition.

The reasons for Wagner's departure have not yet officially transcended, although everything points to his problems in the patellar tendon could be at the origin of this decline.

In this way, the Zamarat CD must now probe the market in search of a new player that reinforces the staff in the face of what remains of the campaign.

Ameryst Alston is her replacement.
https://www.laopiniondezamora.es/de...alston-refuerzo-garantias-quesos/1125789.html

Google translation:
The Zamarat CD announced Wednesday the signing of the American guard Ameryst Alston, a player of guarantees, with two years of experience in the DIA League, and that comes to the orange discipline to replace the absence of Carlie Wagner, who left the club during the break. The North American has this afternoon joined the training of the team led by Fran García and is in good shape to debut as soon as the coach considers it appropriate.

Alston played in CB Al Qazeres in the 2016-2017 season and in the Lointek Gernika in 2017-2018, two seasons in which he averaged 15 points per game in 34 minutes of play, with a percentage of success from the perimeter close to the 40%

The player, of 1.75 meters tall and 24 years old, could debut on Sunday against IDK Gipuzkoa because as reported by the orange club the American arrives this Wednesday to Zamora to immediately put themselves under the orders of Fran García.

I saw this too, and it's only speculation what the situation is, but I think it might be a combination of the caliber of basketball (on her team at least) not quite being up to expectation, plus maybe the knee injury is a nagging injury causing ongoing pain, albeit not an ACL or something more serious. Perhaps she reasons that she already achieved whatever she could get out of the Spanish experiment, so why take the risk of further aggravating her knee injury with not much to gain.

I would argue that she did benefit from the otherwise mixed-results experiment, since she got her Pro resume going, and it was a good one up-til the knee injury. She was 8th in the league in scoring at 15 points per game (up til the injury and subsequent reduced playing time - which may well have been intentional small minutes to allow her knee to heal). There's a lot of pro teams who could (eventually) use a shooting guard who can score 15 points in about 20ish minutes of playing time. When she heals, she can look for opportunities to add-on to that good-start on a resume.

Oh, I just found another hit with a bit more info ...

Carlie Wagner tries to get the ball. (picture of Carlie in action)
The CD Zamarat has begun to probe the market to close the signing of an outside player to cover the low announced yesterday by the American Carlie Wagner in Quesos el Pastor. The Minnesota player, had a few days dragging some knee problems that made his continuity in the team inadvisable. "At first the medical services of the Club had detected that anomaly, although a specific treatment program was followed, which has not yielded the expected results," the club reported yesterday. The player recently visited the doctor of his University of origin that has corroborated the diagnosis of the medical services of the club. "Both diagnoses advise a break of all intense physical activity in order not to cause a serious injury of unpredictable consequences," the club added in a press release. "All this makes it inadvisable to wait a period of two or three months, which given the inaccuracy of the recovery period and the possible state of mind of the player after the injury, have led to terminate the contract of attachment by mutual agreement." Zamarat is also looking for an inside player to complete the squad.

In other words, Carlie has to effectively rest for two to three months after consultation with the Gophers physicians?

In other words, Carlie has to effectively rest for two to three months after consultation with the Gophers physicians?

Yup.

One wonders whether the Spanish doctors were competent relative to Minnesota standards.

In other words, Carlie has to effectively rest for two to three months after consultation with the Gophers physicians?

Why would it be Gophers physicians? Where you seeing that?

Why would it be Gophers physicians? Where you seeing that?

Well, that's probably a wrong conclusion that it's actually a Gophers team doctor that she saw. The quote says ...

The player recently visited the doctor of his University of origin that has corroborated the diagnosis of the medical services of the club. "Both diagnoses advise a break of all intense physical activity in order not to cause a serious injury of unpredictable consequences,"

... so I'd say it's more likely that she saw some (unspecified) doctor affiliated with the University of Minnesota hospital or med school. I suppose that could have been her former team doctor since she already had that relationship established. And it says the Spanish doctors consulted over the phone. So maybe that's the first home doctor she could think of, to have them call.

Anyway, given that they originally under-assessed the complexity or seriousness of the injury, I think we're all glad that she's back home now in Minnesota - land of the great doctors.

Google translates foreign languages literally to American English syntax. Idiomatic expressions in particular come out funny in translation.
