The guess here is that St. Cloud State’s Bob Motzko will be offered the Gophers men’s hockey coaching job.

Motzko, 56, is happy at his alma mater and might have to be talked into taking the Gophers job.

Former Gophers Mike Guentzel, Todd Richards and Tom Ward have plenty of support among alumni. Guentzel is beloved by many. Richards, an assistant with NHL’s Tampa Bay Lightning, doesn’t have a degree and would have to progress toward one if hired. Ward, an assistant for Phil Housley with the Buffalo Sabres, had a highly successful background with the internationally acclaimed Shattuck-St. Mary’s program.

Other prospects include former Gopher Grant Potulny, head coach at Northern Michigan; Gophers assistant Scottie Bell, and Robb Stauber, the Hobey Baker winner who this winter coached the U.S. women’s team to the Olympic gold medal in Pyeongchang, South Korea.
