On Saturday, Kaitlyn Long won the weight throw to become the second national champion in University of Minnesota women’s track and field history. She threw for a winning mark of 23.3m, which for Americans is 76.05.05 feet on her final throw to leap from fifth to first. Long is the first national champion since Heather Dorniden won the 800m in 2006. Long’s throw is the 7th longest in history.

The weight thrown is 20 pounds, so briefly consider how badass it is to chuck an equivalent of a large bowling balls about a 1⁄4 of a way down a city block. Long started the competition by fouling on her first two attempts, but was able to secure a finals place with a throw of 22.15m on her third throw.

This is not Long’s first personal national champion. She was a two time D2 national champion in the weight throw before coming to Minnesota.

Minnesota finished 14th in the team standing. Kiley Sabin finished fifth in the shot put to earn 1st Team All-American honors. Agnes Esser was 11th in the weight throw, and Nayoka Clunis was 16th. Karlie Place also took 12th in the pole vault. Esser, Clunis and Place were awarded Second Team All-America honors.

Long is awesome as to what she did with a 20 pound ball and then throw it 1/4 of a way down a city block. Wow!
