Murphy’s numbers across the board are on the upswing, from rebounds to points scored in a season. He’s also managed to stay out of foul trouble, for the most part, fouling out in just four games this season.

For his efforts, Murphy received All-Big Ten honors, voted to the Second Team by the media panel and Third Team by the conference head coaches. He was honored on the Third Team during his sophomore season. It’s the first time in 12 years a Gophers player has been honored as all-conference (Vincent Grier, 2005 and 2006).

That’s a glass-half-full takeaway from this Gophers 2017-18 campaign. Injuries and an expulsion hampered a once-promising start as the Gophers ended the regular season losing 10 of their last 11 games.

So as much as this season was an overall disappointment for the Gophers, Murphy has the ability to lead this team into next year as one of the top players in the country. He and Nate Mason, who is done after this year, were the captains in the locker room. After an 81-47 home loss to Purdue in January, Murphy talked about how he and Mason could move forward for the rest of the season.

“I think we just both have to grow,” Murphy said. “It helps us grow as people; it helps us grow as players. Just knowing we have that pressure on us.”

He’s already gotten plenty of experience facing adversity and trying to win games without all the pieces in place. He’s faced opponents double-teaming him and trapping him as he fights for space in the paint to score underneath and grab rebounds.

Murphy should be the one to fit comfortably into the senior leadership role come next season.
