Go Gophers!!

Upper Midwest mobs are pretty tame, as mobs go. It shouldn't surprise anyone that folks who spend thousands on season tickets and alumni who care deeply about the U's sports teams are going to watch games with a discerning eye and have opinions on the quality of play, tactics and strategy.

Dick Pitino, because of his contract owns the University of Minnesota Men's Hoops Program. The prexy and the ad made sure of that with their previous actions/inactions. There is nothing anyone can do until the buy out figure decays and wastes away like a long-term option premium. In the end, the coach of the U of M Men's Hoops Program comes as close to having long-term tenure at the U that a coach can have. PJ Fleck's branded Gopher Football Program is set up in the same way. When a coach completes year zero, time is NOT a wasting asset. Expectations are maintained as close to a zero level as possibly can be when a coach has a year zero built into his initial contract. It is OBVIOUS that the coach is in control and is the master of his/her own fate when the year zero status surfaces and the prexy and the ad don't even protest. The coach writes/sells the long-term option and holds all the rights to explore all of HIS/HER rights to stay, leave, collect all dividends and agreed upon salary considerations for at least the terms of the contract. Dick Pitino is in charge here. The prexy and the AD are only along for the ride. IF it doesn't work out so well, only the players and the fans come out holding the short end of the stick. It is a situation all coaches and prexys and athletic directors are very comfortable with. It is what makes men's revenue sports go...The ad & the prexy are covered. The coach and his fantasy salary requirements are protected for a specified period of time. It is probably as good as it will ever get for coaches, prexys and athletic directors. There are no winners or losers within the ranks of the men's revenue sports coaching fraternity. Same with the college prexy crowd and athletic director ranks. Season ticket holders come and go. They also have options. THEY can decide how much they want to invest and for how long a period of time. It is only the players who time keeps ticking away for. At least they get their scholarship IF they are a scholarship player. And so it goes...

Pitino will certainly be our coach next year and that is what's best for the team/program.

"You never feel safe in our profession. It's amazing how it can all change ... You just hope you have a rational AD and President and just go from there."
Tino is up sh!t creek if he's hoping Coyle and Kaler are rational...
