Where would this team finish in Big Ten?

And Zeppelin and any other objective fans, i apologize for the lengthy posts about other programs. It is just that i support 4 programs but live here most of the year and have loved the Gophs for 50 plus years and am tired of being mediocre. Have had some experience and success in the way coaches are vetted and hired and have been very frustrated with how things have happened at the U.

Always appreciate your insights.

What are your thoughts on Niko Medved? I think he's a serious up & comer, and on a direct path to a major conference job in the near future.

Well, why on earth have you selfishly withheld your genius coaching services from the world? The Gophers could have used you coming forward 5 years ago to save us from having to hire Pitino???

you are arguing with Howda and EW? 2 of the to most Negative people on GH.com

this team healthy and without Curry would finish Top 4 ..... with Curry top 3

Like him. Has a staff of specialists too. If they can string some 2o win seasons together he can climb up. Or better yet, stay there and build a mid major winner. Life can be good for families and coaches in those settings. He could become like a Bob Mikillop down at Davidson who turned down 50 major jobs to stay for a great life there. A true legend among his peers and yes only one year of NCAA success (steph curry) in a national way. Few booster responsibilities, win 18-23 every year, great income, run a cool camp and clinic, coach actual student athletes. If your thinking Minnesota he does not have the political clout to impress those clowns. Meanwhile, most of the powers that be in Madison are behind Gard and rightfully so but a few people with a voice have reached out to Musselman rep . Interesting.

Thanks.

I'm hearing Gard is in trouble if next year is anything like this season. It's always in the back of my mind that Bo strong-armed Barry (difficult to do) to get Gard a fair shot at the job. That leads me to believe Alvarez's rope with Gard would be much shorter than with someone he wasn't forced (politically) to hire. Not saying I think Gard should get axed, but don't think it's out of the realm of possibility if next season is another NCAA-less season.

Agree. IF Misses the NCAA'S next year there will be a change. Barry did go after the guy he wanted but that person recommended Gard. Greg is a really wonderful coach and person. They did miss on the 15 class as a result of Bo waffling and thus had to go young but he has never whined or made excuses. He has stayed the course and it is a pretty good guess that the freshman class will be pretty damn good. Takes a year to learn that defense.

Just be thankful the higher-ups at UVa squashed their deal with Tubby and forced them go down the list. Much as with the Gophers and Kill sometimes it's better to be lucky than good in a coaching search.

Littlepage and the president listened to Knight and Wally Walker and other coaches and rebuffed the boosters. The boosters wanted Tubby but Bennett was the overwhelming favorite amongst those in power. JPJ WAS THE ONLY BOOSTER who had a vote and he loved Bennett. He gifts more than the rest put together. Knight told them if they did not get Bennett they would end up watching him build a power at LSU or Marquette or IU who all were moving with larger money. LSU was attractive because he could get his wife back to her hometown and they had deep resources. UVA had the culture, the lifestyle, the academics and outrageous facilities. Money was no real issue as he had extraordinary investments later to be proven real when Texas offered 5 million per to get him over Shaka. He even insisted on incentive pay at UVA to prove himself ! Worked too as he has collected on those in a big way. You do need luck in finding that guy but they did awesome homework and research to increase the odds. He was a no brainer after winning at Washington State. By that time he had made his impression on Wooden. Jerry West kept tabs and with Pat RILEY they were all blown away. They knew of the jobs the family did in building and doing it with integrity. No slime there.

Word is that Littlepage and Tubby had the deal done, but it included lowering the academic requirements which is what squashed it. (Al Groh had been trying for that too). In any event, I don't think Tubby would have been a train-wreck there, but nothing like Bennett has done.

There may have been some truth to Tubby demands and Littlepage was helpless against the board and the presidents. It was far from done. Craig himself was a stickler for grades. UVA is a beast for academics. My nephew played there and was valedictorian coming out of school and said it was tough. No special track. 3 game suspension for a missed class, non travel days. They liked the idea of the coach being a academic all american himself. Now he is a meaningful representative for UVA. Thanks for your feedback.

Probably below Nebraska in conference standings, but enough overall wins and 1 conference tourney win to sneak in to the NCAA tournament. 10-8 or 11-7.

Kind of hard to know where the injured/missing Gophers would finish, but I think "top half" is fair. Whether that's 4th or 6th would be up for debate and depend largely on how good Jarvis Johnson and Matz Stockman are. If either can't play (and we are assuming the rest of the roster is of poor quality) then we would run in to many of the problems the Gophers had post Curry/pre Lynch suspension that would likely cause some bad road losses. That team doesn't have Jordan Murphy, but would still boast one of the more complete starting 5's in the B1G

I think it is possible that having Curry and Coffee the team could have been 4th or 5th. I do not count LYNCH, something is very wrong there. I do not count dupree because every team has some health issues. I said 4th or 5th because that is plenty of talent to win games in a very poor conference. Worst i have ever seen it.

I won't critique your analysis game by game, as I agreed with all but 4 of them, and for now I'll just give you the benefit of the doubt and accept the "one game one way or the other" and obviously would go the positive way with that, putting us at 9-5, with a FAR stronger SOS than Nebraska who we would be tied for 4th place with at 9-5. We'd be comfortably in, NU would be the bubble team. And we have 2 games remaining vs Iowa and Wisconsin. So we'd finish at worst 11-7, IF I concede we'd lose to MSU and Purdue since they are both ranked Top 4 and OH SO AWESOME, right???

Just in general, one thing you seemed not to factor in to your analysis is that added offense is not the only difference adding 2-3 players to a game brings.

For every additional basket the Gophers score because of having those 2 players available on offense, there is also the additional defense, scores by the other team are stopped that otherwise weren't because guys like Konate or a hobbled McBrayer were the defenders.

Also, adding say just 25 minutes for each player, combined is 50 minutes that Konate or a hobbled McBrayer or a not quite as good Hurt do not need to be out on the court. And would McBrayer's health have deteriorated the way it did if he didn't feel compelled to be playing? He could have been sat out of a few games and been allowed to heal up and the games he did play in he would have been more effective. Lynch and Coffey going out exasperated McBrayer's situation.

Individually, Coffey may have played vs OSU, but how effective was he? When he first got injured, it was announced that he would be out until Feb 2nd. His coming back to play the OSU game was his coming back WAY too early, the result being he aggravated the injury.

Had he simply been healthy that game, along with Lynch, I'd say that could have made an 18 pt difference. That was the 5th game they had played in the 5th different city over an 11 day period. No way fatigue wasn't a factor. Add another 50 minutes and every other player on that team has more energy in the 2nd half. And they were only down 7 pts at the half, WITHOUT Lynch and a healthy Coffey.

And the same could be applied to the Purdue game, even you said we played them pretty well in the 1st half. The game at Iowa was only a 4 pt game very late in the game. Adding Lynch and Coffey may have totally swung the momentum our way and also prevented the team from running out of gas at the very end.

So its not out of the realm of possibility that 9-5 is the best we could have possibly done.

And the Indiana game? Maybe going into that game sitting at 9-4 or 8-5 with a full lineup of players would have changed the whole vibe of the game from the opening tip off?

I have a friend with 4 kids that all were very successful in sports, and he was a huge Vikings fan, and he always said, "Winning begets winning and losing begets losing". Had we not had to deal with the loss of Lynch and Coffey and had won just the IU and Maryland games even, we'd have been in a great position to win 4 in a row going into the game in Assembly Hall and well, you say they put in a pathetic effort all around, that probably would not have been the case.

Either way, this team with a full roster should have won the damn Big Ten. Yes, that's right, won it. More talent than most and a team full of seniors and upper classmen. At worst they should have finished second. No matter what happened, going into conference play, this team was struggling. I'm not certain they would be much better than .500 right now. That's not acceptable when you have a first team all Big Ten guard and an All American candidate on your roster. Fill in with guy with zero talent mixed with heart and desire and you should be able to go .500 in this league. Instead, Richard lets guys like Mason not worry about playing any defense at all. This trickles down to the rest and here they sit.
