Proud of this team

It does not adjust for injuries, flu. broken heart, suspensions. It counts every possession of every game and we pulled every metric on how best to rise from mediocrity. Blue bloods are also good at it but they recruit better talent and thus points are easier to come by. If outscoring your opponent is the object then everyone knows that scoring is critical, we run those metrics as well. But if outscoring the other team is the goal then stopping them from scoring is equally imperative. It is easier to teach on some level but it is harder to sell. It must be a non negotiable in escaping being mediocre. Many programs have done it. Just look at Kenpom and the rankings reveal excellence . We went back pre Kenpom to build the model.

Right. I throw out the kenpom for us in our injury/suspension years because of the extent of them. That seems fair to me. Is there something I'm missing?

No sir. I do not throw out all the deffiency on defense because of injuries because it can be replaced far easier than offense. Not every guy will be a great defender but there is no excuse to not be good individually and damn good as a team. The catch is not everybody is great at teaching it.

Why couldn't this years team have a similar defensive kenpom to last year if at full strength? Last years gophers improved as the season progressed, This year's version didn't get a chance. Fair?

Numbers don’t lie here is where we have rated on defense.
130/100/231/21/192. Those are simply abysmal. 30-57 lines up pretty solid with those horrific defensive efforts. And not only do those numbers tell the story but the eye test as well. He has not shown an ability to coach defense.
Where do we rate offensively? Or don't we want to know that?

Do you think BK or GD are able to fill RL's shoes defensively? The one player who was here last year that made a difference in our defense was Lynch.

What kenpom numbers show is our lack of defensive talent before Lynch arrived and our lack of depth behind him.

85/73/289/173/116. That tells me the one year we were great on defense we had an ncaa tournament team.

The thought is what if we were at full strength like last year. BK and GD played last year. Our kenpom was impressive. Miles was on the hot seat last year, Collins has had a disappointing year, Painter has been out of favor with their fans for a number of years before this. I am just afraid we start all over there are no guarantees just like there are no guarantees if we keep Pitino. I think if we have our two guards we win the mtsu game at least. At full strength this year we would have a good chance of advancing as well.
That has to mean something. If we have a poor year, I think I'll be willing to consider the dark side next year, just not yet.

Agree, he has to be brought back next year unless there is one more expense problem or character issue. You do not need to worry about him going anywhere as no one else is trying to hire him.

What are the odds that Pitino, the younger, gets caught up in the FBI investigation of college basketball? BK & GD were recruited under a program that is part of the FBI's scrutiny. You know the anti-athletic and anti-mens basketball voices will not STFU about it, if the FBI comes calling.

The offensive and defensive numbers during Pitino's term do not suggest improvement in the program and the two sexual misconduct issues in the last three years all stack up against him. If he actually gets caught up in an FBI investigation, then selling the hope of the next season will be harder to do, actually it would be nearly impossible.

Faith and blind belief in the future wither beneath the heat and pressure of criticism. That is what the anti-athletic forces count on. What happens is athletic teams feed the critics actual incidents that help erode the faith and belief in the program. Statistics and numbers are the rebar, reinforcement, of faith and belief, and right now those don't look good. That means people have to have faith that their faith and beliefs are enough to turn the program around.

The difference would probably be that I think he has EARNED his return, while you would think he hasn't.

I think many people feel that he hasn't earned a return. The problem with some who feel he hasn't earned it is the buyout that is in his contract.

Think that is right. From where i stand we are not the kind of program to absorb the buy out and we seemingly can not attract a great coach. On top of that he may be able to get to 4th or 5th in the conference for a fan base who that is considered fantastic.

Ouch. It's hard to imagine a more stagnant offense than Tubby ball. However, the game against MSU was almost a mirror image of the offensive movement found in Tubby ball.

Still very proud of this team. I actually had fun watching the game tonight!

Haha...you are too easy. I'm so "ignorant" that you took the bait hook, line, and sinker.

We went around and around on this before, you tool. Yup, the word yahoo is so offensive that a giant corporation has it as its name. Yes, oh so very offensive. I love how you follow up this post with a classic diatribe about "PC culture" when you've invented offense in your own head to a completely innocuous everyday word.

I await your 9,000-word treatise in response. What is actually offensive is that you haven't been banned yet.

9,000 word treatise? lol And oh my, a giant corporation has it as it's name, that decides it, that ends the debate. I mean, how would or could any business in the hedonistic American culture based mostly on greed be anything but the most respectful of things of a spiritual nature, I mean, what was I thinking. I'm sure the multi-billion dollar PORN industry cares a lot about respecting things of a spiritual nature. I'm sure Hollywood is just the most Saintly of people groups out there, the GANGSTA RAP music industry, or MTV or VH1 care only about honoring the highest of all human values. I'm sure 100% of Pro athletes are church going women respecting honor men. I'm sure there has never been a Golden Gopher athlete EVER accused of gang rape. Right???

Yeah, you really got me dpodoll68. You really got me.

So, Skynet should be trusted with mankind's future???

Dude, computer rankings can only say so much. Sometimes you just have to look beyond them dude.

Ditto, also very proud of this team. They just don't give up.

All the fans out there who seem to expect this very depleted roster to perform so much better, obviously have not coached. Nothing but arm chair QBs.

Teams crumble losing just one starting player in cbb, I've seen it happen dozens of times. But we didn't lose 1 starter, we lost 2 starters, AND our #1 backup, and an additional starter has been severely hobbled as well.

I think that a lot of us feel that we have to build something here and that we cannot switch coaches every 5 years and hope to accomplish that. Pitino is young, recruits well and I still believe has a very promising future. I am not willing to settle for 4th place long term but I think it is an acceptable stepping stone in the short term. The extenuating circumstances of this year should inform us that it is not time to give up. This is not a mess. The roster for next year is very promising and he deserves our support to get the job done with them.

With you. Proud of that first 14 minutes of defense. Great job. One good year next year is not the fix, he needs to string together 4-6 years in a row of 12-6 with a conference title mixed in. Then we have done something meaningful. And we must do that without any problems off the court. All of that is more than manageable.

Finally, we agree on something. Difference being I believe HE CAN do that, string together 4-6 years in a row of upper conf finishes with a conf title in there. As for problems off the court? He can't go hang out with the players outside of practice and can't post gaurds outside of their rooms. The world is a screwed up place these days, liberals in Hollywood promote sex one moment, then condemn it the next, idiots come out of nowhere and from every nook and cranny. I'm not going to vouch for RP or anyone other than myself in that regard. Do we hope he brings in student/athletes smart enough to keep their you know what in their pants? Of course we do. But young men far too often let their little head think for them. Just saying, in the state of Minnesota, if a privileged UMN athlete sneezes funny, the Minnesota press will report it and put their liberal skewed viewpoint on it. So yeah, of course I hope nothing ever gets reported, but if you want guarantees, run off to Kentucky or Georgia or Alabama where people will give the life of their first born to ensure their home team's success in the upcoming season.
