Damarius Travis’ fur aviator hat at Super Bowl Opening Night wasn’t part of a shtick to fit in with the “reporter” in a shark costume or the sombrero that players donned to appease another gimmicky interviewer.

While his teammates wore Patriots baseball hats to Monday’s media event on an 8-degree night in St. Paul, Travis called on his five-year experience as a Gopher.

“See, they weren’t thinking,” said Travis, a Pensacola, Fla., native. “I was prepared. They out here playin’. This (cold) is for real.”

As a rookie safety on New England’s practice squad, Travis has spent the season helping Tom Brady, Rob Gronkowski and the dynastic Patriots prepare for Super Bowl LII. New England faces the Philadelphia Eagles at U.S. Bank Stadium on Sunday.

Travis hasn’t played in a game this season, so he likely will just watch Sunday’s championship game from the sideline. But this ride has been real.

“It’s been awesome,” said Travis. “Just being with this team and through it all, actually on the team and behind the scenes on how things go down and how much hard work you put in to get to this point and be playing. You set goals in the offseason to get here and once it’s finally here, it’s like, ‘We are going to the Super Bowl.’ ”

Travis, who will train in Minnesota in the offseason, watched every Gophers game last season but hasn’t seen the reality show “Being P.J. Fleck.” He has been communicating with senior safety Duke McGhee and safety/cornerback Kunle Ayinde about going though the draft process.

“They’re asking questions like, “What’s it like? What should I look for?’ ” Travis relayed. “It’s just me being a big brother.”

Travis said he benefited from similar advice from former Gophers Eric Murray, now a safety with the Kansas City Chiefs, and Briean Boddy-Calhoun, now a Cleveland Browns cornerback.

“Just stay focused and don’t worry about not getting invited to an all-star game or getting invited to the combine,” Travis said of his message. “… Just focus on your pro day and going out and going to workouts and stay locked in. That is the biggest thing. It’s easy to get sidetracked by all the time between your workout sessions and your pro day. Just stay mentally focused and locked in.”
