Entering his first year as the head coach of the Golden Norse Football team, is former Norseman Clay Patterson. Patterson comes back home to NEO from conference rival Trinity Valley Community College in Athens, Texas, where he spent the last three seasons as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Patterson has over twelve years of NCAA Division II and NJCAA offensive coaching experience (9 as offensive coordinator). During that time, Patterson has coached teams to a total of 98 wins, including three 10+ win seasons.

In Patterson’s 3 years at TVCC, he helped lead the team to five Southwest Junior College Football Conference (SWJCFC) championships (3 Conference, 2 Conference Playoffs) and two Heart of Texas (HOT) Bowl Game championships. Patterson’s offense broke the all-time yards per game record at any level of football with 656.1 YPG during the 2015 season. Other NJCAA records set during Patterson’s tenure were for total offense in a season (7,778 in 2014), yards per game (656.1 in 2015), and plays in a season (938 in 2014). In 23 of his 35 games as offensive coordinator, Patterson’s offense scored over 50 pts, with thirteen 60 point games and eight 70 point games. During his tenure at TVCC his overall record is 29-5 while averaging 54 points and 604 yards per game.

Patterson has had seven former quarterbacks sign Division 1 scholarships, and coached 2 quarterbacks to SWJCFC Player of the Year awards, one of which was rated by Rivals.com in 2015 as the #1 Dual-Threat QB in the country (Jérod Evans).

Prior to his tenure at TVCC, Patterson spent six seasons as the offensive coordinator at Texas A&M University-Kingsville. His Javelina offense broke 28 individual and 17 team passing records, Patterson’s offense helped lead the teams to one Lone Star Conference (LSC) championship and 2 playoff appearances.

Patterson is a native of Morris, Oklahoma and is a former Norseman who played for NEO in 1999-2000. Patterson finished his career at Southeastern Oklahoma State University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in Health, Human Performance and Recreation and his master’s degree in Education Technology. Patterson's wife, the former Ashley Holt, is a Houston, Texas native and Baylor University graduate who currently serves as the Online Instructional Designer at NEO. Clay, Ashley and their adorable schnauzer Rio reside in Miami, Oklahoma.

So help me out. We lost a linebacker coach to Texas A & M. Are downsizing on defense and increasing on offense as to coaches?

A coach on offense is more than likely leaving.

I'm sure Fleck looked at him. Resume does look good though.

Haha no way in h*** Fleck would ever look at Buddy. Buddy is about the complete opposite of Fleck. If you haven't seen Last Chance U I suggest you go and check it out. Or even search buddy's name to watch some of his videos. You'll get a good laugh and just shake your head.

So did Paup get demoted?

So did Paup get demoted?

Paup will work with both LBS and defensive line. Rossi will coach defensive line. Former DC. No announcement on where Patterson will coach.

I'd never seen Last Chance U. Thanks for pointing me in that direction. Coach Stephens is an absolute hoot.

If he's coming out of Oklahoma, are we expecting fast tempo and passing are his specialties?

Is he going to be a good recruiter?

I know very little other than what the resume says. I don't doubt that anyone could be complete opposite of any coach and that is why they wouldn't be hired. I'll take your word that Buddy is far from being a good fit for Fleck and crew. I like just about everything Fleck does except running after the quarter ends.

More details - from the Strib:

Fleck hired Clay Patterson, head coach of Northeastern Oklahoma A&M, as an on-field assistant coach in a role to be determined. Fleck also promoted quality control assistant Joe Rossi to defensive line coach, and announced that Bryce Paup, the former NFL standout who was defensive line coach in 2017, will be the team’s pass rush specialist coach. Special teams coordinator Rob Wenger also will coach the outside linebackers.

Fleck also promoted David Parker from graduate assistant to quality control assistant, replacing Rossi, and added Donald Celiscar and Michael Priefer Jr. as graduate assistants. Celiscar, who played for Fleck at Western Michigan, will work with the defense. Priefer, the son of Vikings special teams coordinator Mike Priefer, will work with special teams.

As I look at the coaching staff, I don't see anyone listed as a D-backs coach. But the new guy seems like more of a QB guru.

Think JB is right, there has to be another coach leaving to make room for a DB coach

I wouldn't have known about Buddy either if I wouldn't have watched Last Chance U. In last Chance U Buddy and one of the alternate officials actually got into a fight on the field. Pretty entertaining stuff actually!

I'm in the middle of season 2 and Buddy is much calmer than in season 1.

The U would be lucky to get Coach Buddy. The guy has won national titles as a head coach. Fleck probably did not hire Coach Buddy in fear of being overshadowed and eventually losing his job to him.

This is one of the dumbest things I’ve ever read on this board, and that’s saying something.

I was scratching my head a bit when I read the thread title, but after seeing his resume it makes sense. History of developing JUCO QB's (obviously important to our team this year), big offensive numbers as an OC, and ties to the South (where Lindquist left a void). But again, it does seem another assistant is leaving which honestly sucks.
