Jamir Harris

Way to support the team. They will need to fix that top 50 and top 100 record and there are not many chances left.

I guess I was more impressed with Jamir's game before OT than most. I was looking at it through the prism of what he had shown before that game and I thought he showed some things that he hadn't previously. He was able to take the ball to the basket several times getting rejected once, drawing a foul on another. He also appeared more comfortable handling the ball when he did have it. He also chipped in 5 rebounds which was surprising.

It's one game and he still did noticeably draw Pitino's ire with his defensive on at least two occasions, so I am not willing to make anything more of it than one encouraging performance. Before tonight, Jamir looked like a very undersized shooting specialist who couldn't defend a position or add anything else of value on the offensive end. It was like we had a 6'0 Steve Novak on the team and you wondered in what situations you could actually play him. For one game, he looked like more than that. Lets hope he builds on it.

I wish people wouldn't be so hard on Isaiah, but I get it. In the last 10 games where Isaiah has attempted a shot, he's shot 40% or better from the field twice: 3-7 against Oral Roberts and 2-5 against Indiana. He has shot over 50% from the field a grand total of twice all season: 4-7 against Providence and 1-1 against Rutgers. He's certainly not come in and met expectations, but the encouraging thing to me is that we see flashes of an elite player. He can get to rim, he might be the strongest/most confident dribbler that we've had in a decade, he's great at finding guys on his drives (if his minutes were played more with Reggie than Bakary, I think you'd see quite a few more assists on his record), he's pulled down several rebounds in traffic that were flat out special for a player of his size and he plays with the type of confidence you need to be successful. Playing just 2 minutes tonight had to be tough for him and I am sure it will be tougher if he gets the same amount of run back home in NYC in what I bet he believed would be a bit of a showcase for him. If he can get through this rough stretch and remain the same confident player, I think he's got a bright future ahead of him.

I would agree with everything you had here. I agree, up against Jamir's prior performancance he did ok in regulation. I still think it felt like we were 3v5 on offense where we would not put the ball in the post to Bakary and we wouldn't do anything with the ball in Jamir's hands. When PSU finally figured out that Murph would not pass the ball post to post he was getting doubled consistently and then they started trapping Mason on the pick n roll our offense was "sh1t" from that point forward.

Pitino did a decent job adjusting to run the weave to the weak side to get Murphy isolated in a situation where PSU couldnt double easily. That generated some offense and then allowed for Jamir to find a couple shots to knock down.

Washington is going to adjust. With capable catchers he has soo many more assists and maybe doesn't force it as much when he's out there with the 2nd team. I felt Pitino valued shots today and decided that 3 guys were going to get all of the shots and playing Issiah who would undoubtedly force some stuff would put the game in a bad spot.

This has been one of my primary annoyances with Pitino when it comes to this squad. As in the past with other players, he's been quick to criticize and reduce playing time of players who make defensive errors while at the same time tolerating other players who lack the ability or inclination to defend. Harris shows good defensive ability and effort, which is what you look for in a player. Consistency and execution will come with coaching and playing time. It's on the coach to provide both of those things and accept the learning process. This is a team that needs Harris to be functional, but he's not going to get there by sitting for games at a time. When I saw he was starting last night, I was encouraged, both for him and for the team's prospects in the game. His combination of potential both offensively and defensively may be the best on the team. That's why I haven't been mourning too hard that we recruited him and not Davison. The potential is there.

Hoping he gained some much need confidence to be a valuable tool

Who are you alleging he's lenient with?

Secondly the comment about him having the most potential of anyone on the team offensively and defensively is a head scratcher.

He plays with intensity on defense, which I really like. However, as a 2 guard at 6'0" he is going to be a liability against a lot of 2 guards, often the best scorers on the opposing team. And I love the fact that we have a 3 pt sniper on our squad for the next 4 years.

Agreed.
Gabe is billed as another one.

This. We need more “pure” shooters, not more projects. Glad we are getting another one in Gabe next year. Harris will have to compensate for his lack of height by smart positioning and 100% effort. He seems up to the effort task. I hope he is a fast learner on defense. I also hope Pitino can soon recruit more 6’5” to 6’7” athletic wings that are good shooters. You can’t have too many of those guys on a team.

Both Harris and McBrayer are hitting over 40% from 3 (on more than 60 attempts for DM) so both might be considered knockdown shooters. Gabe looks pretty pure out there to my eyes.

I see Gabe as someone who will improve as a shooter through college. I'm pretty stoked to get him in here.

I like Jamir. Yes he is under sized but I do think he is a smart player. My first reaction when I saw him in the preseason was that he reminded me of a lot of Michigan State guards who start out with limited minutes as freshman then become key players for two or three years. My guess is that he was not naive about his chances for significant playing time as a freshman and is now taking advantage of a bad situation for the team and doing whatever he can to help. He needs to be successful sooner rather than later it he will be good in his career here

Kalschuer will be more like Mcbrayer than Harris, decent shooter but not a knockdown shooter,

That’s why Tre Jones, Kalscheur’s teammate on the Howard Pulley AAU team, started referring to Kalscheur as “Klay,” in reference to Golden State two-way guard Klay Thompson, last summer.

“That’s kind of how he plays, for sure,” Jones said. “He does so many things right. He’s real fundamental, He can shoot it well, he can play defense. Klay is a good comparison.”

That sounds like the type of player Gophers coach Richard Pitino is looking for.

“He sees me playing as a shooter, a spark on the offense with what they need. They need a shooter out there,” Kalscheur said of the role Pitino prescribed for him. “And also defense … to lock (the other team’s best scorer) down.”

If the resurgent Gophers had an obvious flaw last season, it was from beyond the arc. Minnesota was tied for 10th in the Big Ten in three-point shooting percentage (34.2 percent) and was in the conference’s bottom four in both three-pointers made and attempted.

While one player can’t be the sole remedy for any team problem, Kalscheur is, as Jones put it, “a sharpshooter.”

Kalscheur, who has offers from the Gophers, Northern Iowa, North Dakota, Pittsburgh, Bowling Green and Drake, shot 44 percent from three for Howard Pulley on Nike’s EYBL circuit this summer. He took 117 three-pointers in 15 games, the fourth most attempts on the circuit, while averaging 17.7 points.

“If he can do one thing, he can shoot,” said Rene Pulley

Regarding Jamir Harris I suppose it is formally possible that he is in competition with IW for PG minutes next season. IW clearly more natural at the position but Jamir can shoot it much better. Could he be the primary PG next year or at least platooned with IW at that position?

You don't play people at point guard simply because they're short. I like Harris, but he is not a point guard. He's an undersized 2.

This.

I'm also curious to see if Kalscheur eats up a lot of Harris' minutes since he is coming in as a shooter but is bigger. Also, I believe Kalscheur is supposed to be a great defender.

He's a combo gaurd. His natural position is 2 guard but will likely be asked to run the point at times due to injury, fouls, etc. Washington is the starter next year no question but this is what pitino has been building to. Having guys that are positionaly flexible so we aren't so hamstrung when someone is out.

Maybe I've missed it, but I haven't seen any point guard skills or instincts out of him, so I personally wouldn't call him a combo guard. If the potential of him having to slide over and play minutes at point guard due to injuries or fouls qualifies him as a combo guard, then literally every single shooting guard in the country is a combo guard, which renders that term completely meaningless. He's a pure, undersized 2 from what I've seen, and I don't mean that as an insult.

Listed as a combo gaurd. Doubt he runs the point much though since Washington is clearly the better pg and as I stated his natural position is the 2 guard.

I think the slow starts of both Jamir and IW should be cautionary tales for all (myself included) who expected impact out of freshmen without some growing pains this season. We aren’t pulling in top 20 nba ready guys. Gabe will probably take some time to adjust as well. I’m tempering my expectations early.

Harris believes he can play both guard spots in college.

"Just whatever the coach needs me to be," he said. "If he needs me to play the one and make plays for others, or score on the wing, or score from the ball position, I can do as well. It's whatever the team needs."

https://www.sny.tv/college-recruiti...-harris-to-visit-minnesota-stanford/201607812

He got minutes at point in HS, he can run the show if needed.

I think we have 2 great guards in IW and Harris. Harris has the better outside shot, and IW should be driving to the basket more as he's incredibly good at it, or will be. His potential in this regard is amazing. Harris' potential seems to be from the perimeter. Not sure if he will ever be the best PG in the Conf, but do we need him to be that good at the position? If he can simply do an adequate job of covering that position in times of need, and hopefully he can, then what more would we need?

I think these 2 youngens have very bright futures, as long as Pitino gives them the opportunities to shine that they need.

Have you seen any traits of a point guard in his game?

Isn't up to me. Do you see another point guard on the team next year or is Washington going to play all game every game?

Coffey and McBrayer are better ball handlers than Harris. Plus there’s potential for a grad transfer. Harris is not a combo guard and struggles to handle the ball. He’s a SG.

No it's not up to you, but you're suggesting he's the backup aren't you? And obviously, I don't think Washington is playing every minute, not sure how that's relevant or you even jumped to that conclusion.

He played the point in hs and we have a very small sample size in college. Not saying he will be THE backup but at times he will be depended on to fill that role same as Mcbrayer and less so Coffee. None are great points but can bring it up the court and start the offense.
