Go Gophers!!

Heal fast, Mark.

Rough couple weeks for the AD. Contrary to some of the ridiculous hyperbole here, he's done a great job and Men's hoops and football programs will be in better shape than they've been in a long time if we're patient.

Ditto.

Part of the job - like it or not - is serving as a spokesperson and -when necessary - damage control specialist for the athletic department. I submit that Coyle has not handled that aspect of the job very well.

Again - NOT saying he's a bad person. He may very well be a good guy off-camera. He may be a very able administrator and behind-the-scenes AD.

But, he does a poor job in front of the cameras and before the microphone. That is part of the job in today's media landscape. He needs to improve - or find someone else to handle those duties.

Finally - if by "he's done a great job," you really mean "he hired Fleck," then I give it a grade of incomplete. The book on Fleck has certainly not been written yet. Fleck could become one of the best coaches in Gopher history (at least the last 50 years or so), or he could turn into an over-hyped disappointment. His success - or lack of success - will be part of Coyle's legacy.

Cue the haters. And lets quit with the notion that Coyle fired Claeys because he wanted to hire his own guy and then lied about the reasons during Fleck's first news conference. Claeys was was going to be fired no matter who was hired as AD. Kaler wanted to get rid of him because of his lack of leadership during the football scandal. When Coyle talked about changing the culture during the news conference that is exactly what Kaler wanted him to say. Kaler gave Pitino a second chance after the the basketball scandal but he wasn't going to allow Claeys to stay.

I agree 100% with S.O.N.!

Very well stated. I hear Norwegians are in high demand these days, S O N! You bring some good, common sense stability to the conversation.

As they say using theatrical jargon to wish an actor well: "...break a leg..." Mr. Coyle. Now, get out there and play the part of an AD. "...There is NO business like show business..." Coyle and Prexy K are the PRODUCERS of the GOPHER sit-com-drama currently playing.

I always thought it was Kaler and Coyle who showed a lack of leadership throughout the incident. Kids were suspended that had nothing to do with the unfortunate situation and Claeys supported those kids and the rest of his teams decisions. If any leadership was displayed at all, I think it was by Claeys, and as often happens it is the leaders that go down with the ship while some CYA administrators keep their jobs and set a bad example for future leaders.

Yep, good take SON. Spot on. Cruze...you definitely are in love with Coyle and Kaler, I get everyone has an opinion but your defense of them seems over the top. They rightly deserve some criticism of some of the handling of this mess, after all it is not only Coyle on his own bombing as a public speaker (although I don't think he's terrible personally but the consensus is he's far from eloquent) but he's the one that publically said Lynch should practice and deserves due process. I would say that contradicted what your favorite group the EOAA said (he should be expelled) and seems to contradict his actions against the football players. Now I'm not here to start a pissing contest and derail things but I am pointing out that Coyle definitely and rightly in my opinion should get some criticism. I don't think for a second he should be fired as of now but criticism...sure.

The venom that people have for Coyle isn't that he fired Claeys. It's how he fired Claeys. Frankly, I would hope that $800k per year would afford you better leadership and more than a "yes man" for Kaler.

It was a bad break for Mr. Coyle when all this mess hit and then he broke a leg. It's tough to run on ice and snow, I guess. However, the cast of characters around here does fracture me and crack me up some times. It's fun to have a little fun during times when events on the hoops team get us down and when we literally get the legs cut out from under us on and in the courts...

I hope he heals fast.

While we may have upsetting thoughts about Kaler and Coyle, we have to learn to look ahead.

We only have to three to five decades to enjoy life. Let's hope we win a championship under Fleck's tenure.

Life is great! Go Gophers!

Definitely not a Coyle fan but hopes he has a quick and full recovery.

Get well Mr. Coyle! Don't give up trying to run outside again down the road!

OK, you are not saying he is a bad person. But you are also not expressing any sympathy for a guy who just broke his leg. Instead you are criticizing him for something totally unrelated to the matter at hand. Which is a broken leg.

Sure you are not saying he is a bad person?

Who is this? And what have you done with Wren?

It's been a long time since I was wren on this board. I took the moniker imthewalrus back on July 30, 2010. How are you doing Old Cardinal...and what have you done with Young Cardinal? "...Ain't it funny how time slips away?"

I was out just walking a few years ago... right in my driveway and blew up my knee. Crazy how fast that can happen.

Get well soon AD.

Agree with all - except I WOULD say he is a bad person.

Great stuff as always. Please consider donating to the site. It's not free to run and you seem to get a LOT of enjoyment from it.

Have you tried to figure out why it bothers you that some random internet poster thinks MC is a bad person? I absolutely think he is. I think anyone who lies as a first instinct or is dishonest in a position like AD for the sake of self preservation is a bad person. My opinion doesn't relate at all to what a terrible leader and communicator he is - those things don't make him a bad person, just a bad AD.

I'm not really a big fan of Coyle, but what could he have done differently with how he fired Claeys? Firing someone isn't pretty, there is no good way to do it.
