The ninth-best scoring offense in women’s college basketball continued its roll into the Big Ten season on Thursday night. Minnesota hung 90 points on Northwestern to move to 1-0 in conference play and improve its scoring average to 87.8 points a game.

Keying the Gophers’ attack was its outside shooting, as Minnesota hit 10 3-pointers, continuing another strong offensive trend. Minnesota is hitting 9.2 3-pointers a game this season, the 24th-best mark in the country.

Three players — Carlie Wagner, Gadiva Hubbard and Destiny Pitts — have hit 30-plus threes this season. Wagner is shooting 39 percent from deep while Pitts, who hit six 3-pointers against Northwestern, is shooting 40 percent...

...A big reason for the improvement is Pitts, the freshman from Detroit who can play small forward or serve as a stretch-four in the Gophers’ offense.

“That creates some matchup issues, then people have to decide how they want to defend that,” Stollings said. “So again, it’s nice to have that, because it puts a lot of pressure on the defense.”

And opens up the floor to give Kenisha Bell, the Gophers’ leading scorer at 21 points per game, opportunities to attack the rim.

“It’s a good balance,” Wagner said. “We have people who get it and drive, and if they take that away, then we kick out for three. They have to choose what they’re going to defend that night.”
