A world famous scientist, former University of Minnesota student and Gopher athlete passed away yesterday at the age of 95.
Norman Borlaug, a Cresco, Iowa native, was a student at the University of Minnesota during the Depression years. He was on the varsity wrestling team and reached the Big Ten semi-finals as a wrestler. He was credited with promoting wrestling in the state during his student days by putting on exhibitions. He was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame at Stillwater, Ok in 1992. He earned his Bachelors, Masters and Doctorate degrees at the U. His Ph.D was in plant pathology and genetics.
In 1970, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for his research and the development of disease resistant, high-yield wheat. As a result of his research, he's credited with saving millions of lives through food production development.
In later years he was a professor at the Texas A&M, and he was instrumental in creating the World Food Prize.
Norman Borlaug's life is another winning product/example, shining light, of the University of Minnesota of which we can be extremely proud.
