Dave Thorson, who coached DeLaSalle to nine Minnesota state high school basketball championships, including six straight through last season, returns to Minneapolis as a first-year assistant for the Drake men’s basketball team that plays the Gophers on Monday evening.

Drake head coach Niko Medved, who was the 2017 Southern Conference coach of the year at Furman last season, is a fast-rising former Gophers assistant from Roseville with undergrad and post-graduate degrees from Minnesota.

Thorson, also a former Gophers assistant, and Medved are relentless recruiters, having recent success internationally as well as nationally.

The Drake team that comes to Williams Arena is the seventh-smallest in Division I. From a physical perspective, Drake (4-4) should be a total mismatch against the rugged No. 14-ranked Gophers (8-2). But the advantage for Drake in playing in Minneapolis is that the school is just 3½ hours from the Twin Cities, and Thorson and Medved want to recruit Minnesota prep players.

Drake this season has beaten Wake Forest, a NCAA tournament team last season.

Minnesota will pay Drake $120,000 for its appearance at Williams Arena.
