It's never too early for RPI and Strength of schedule.

Through games of Dec 3rd with SOS in parenthesis:

12 Iowa (31)
16 Michigan (16)
18 Ohio State (38)
21 Purdue (21)
29 Rutgers (80)
34 Maryland (69)
54 Minnesota (216)
72 Michigan State (162)
75 Penn State (218)
82 Wisconsin (134)
103 Indiana (45)
134 Northwestern (132)
156 Illinois (184)
213 Nebraska (227)

Gophers strength of schedule is embarrassing. (Same with PSU and Nebraska, although Nebraska has more of an excuse to have a weak schedule.) This past weekend's Trib had an article on Pitts (referenced elsewhere on this board). The tone of that article was one of jubilation with the Gophers great start. I'm still suggesting that we wait until the Gophers begin BIG play before we get too excited. I hope I'm wrong, but I'm still thinking that this is a middle-of-the-pack conference team at best. Well, enough of my negativity....I am glad to see that Bell appears to be much improved, and Pitts is definitely someone who can be a first-year contributor. And I liked seeing Bello hit some shots away from the bucket in the win over Eastern Michigan.

While you may be right about the Gophs being overhyped, I would’ve expected the typical middle of the pack Gophers to get thumped by a top 10 team like Miami.

Still lost obviously, but I think they pass the eye test of being better than a middle of the pack team. Time will tell though!

When did the Gophers women's team play Miami? Maybe you have your men's and women's schedules confused?

Well they last played Miami in 2013 and won 74-67. It was the final full game that Rachel and Amanda played together. before the ACL. Rachel scored 28 points and Amanda 18.

One day later because of MLK Day.

RPI Through Games of 14 January with strength of schedule and conference record.

5 Ohio State 11 (5-0)
10 Rutgers 14 (4-1)
25 Iowa 46 (3-2)
33 Michigan State 45 (3-2)
35 Michigan 55 (4-3)
37 Maryland 84 (4-1)
41 Purdue 17 (3-2)
53 Minnesota 98 (3-3)
75 Indiana 5 (1-5)
81 Nebraska 72 (4-2)
83 Penn State 59 (2-4)
141 Illinois 75 (0-5)
168 Northwestern 124 (2-3)
190 Wisconsin 74 (0-6)

To the surprise of absolutely no one (except maybe Charlie Creme, who has the Gophers among the first eight out of the tournament), the NCAA selection committee today basically announced how hard it is going to be for Minnesota to make the tournament, even if they hit the magic 20 or more wins. Baylor, almost certainly one of the four or five best teams in the country, is seeded ninth because of a triple-digit strength of schedule.

Gophers have cracked the Top 50 now currently sitting at #47.

UNLV keeps winning in the Mountain West and is #100 now to give the Gophers a 3rd Top 100 win. ;)

RPI Through Games of 21 January with strength of schedule and conference record.

6 Ohio State 8 (6-1)
14 Rutgers 14 (5-3)
26 Michigan 52 (6-2)
29 Iowa 33 (3-4)
30 Maryland 92 (5-1)
40 Minnesota 90 (5-3)
44 Michigan State 55 (4-3)
47 Purdue 29 (4-2)
59 Nebraska 43 (5-2)
69 Indiana 4 (2-6)
79 Penn State 50 (3-4)
165 Illinois 69 (0-7)
182 Northwestern 77 (1-7)
190 Wisconsin 77 (1-7)

Of the Gophers last 8 games, 2 are against +100 Teams (and they are both on the road). 2-0 is a must

Of the teams above them, they get Michigan & Maryland at home & Iowa on the road. 2-1 is possible.

Of their peer teams (in the 40's) Purdue is on the road. This is a maybe. but a loss is not a killer.

The other 2 are home games vs IU & Penn St. Better go 2-0 in these.

I see 6-2 down the stretch.

I feel like 5-3 seems more doable but I like your thinking (and I'm a bit more of a believer after seeing them Sunday).

I don’t think we have an AP Poll thread going so I’ll just use this one. A sportswriter for Purdue sports gave the Gophers a #24 ranking, but he was the only member of the AP panel to do so.

If the Gophers want to gain some more national attention, this would be the perfect week to do so. This is the week you don’t want to look like a deer in the headlights. This is the week you want to be firing on all cylinders. This is the week.

Gophers bump up to #40 in RPI, #100 in SOS after the Michigan victory.

That's the good news. The bad news is still having to play RPI busters Indiana and Illinois.

Last year Michigan finished 11-5 in the B1G and was famously snubbed by the NCAA selection committee. For fun I compared Michigan’s NCAA pre-selection show team sheet with this seasons (updated through the 15th( Purdue's win over Maryland)) Minnesota Team Sheet. A few things stand out:

1. Michigan had no top 50 RPI wins, Minnesota will likely have at least three.
2. Last year, Michigan took full advantage of the B1G having some really terrible teams. This season, Minnesota, thus far, has taken full advantage of the B1G having (probably fewer) really terrible teams.
3. Last year the B1G's conference RPI was 6 whereas this season it has stayed pretty steady at 3.

Michigan had no top 50 RPI wins: They lost to:
9 UCLA, 12 Florida State,16 Maryland, 27 Ohio State, 42 Michigan State, 42 Michigan State

Michigan’s B1G wins:
51 Indiana, 58 Purdue, 64 Iowa, 69 Northwestern, 73 Minnesota, 196 Nebraska, 196 Nebraska, 208 Illinois, 210 Wisconsin, 210 Wisconsin, 224 Rutgers.

Michigan’s B1G Losses:
27 Ohio State, 42 Michigan State, 42 Michigan State, 51 Indiana, 87 Penn State

Michigan’s worst RPI Loss: 207 Xavier

Minnesota Team Sheet through Feb 14th:

Top 50 Losses: 7 Ohio State, 17 Iowa
Top 50 Wins: 17 Iowa, 41 Purdue, 46 Michigan

Minnesota’s B1G wins:
15 Iowa, 41 Purdue, 46 Michigan, 63 Michigan State, 81 Penn State, 81 Penn State, 188 Wisconsin, 188 Wisconsin, 192 Northwestern

Minnesota’s B1G losses:
7 Ohio State, 17 Iowa, 23 Rutgers, 60 Nebraska

Minnesota’s worst RPI loss: 208 San Diego.

Indiana is coming on strong (6 wins in a row?). Probably should no longer consider that a gimme... but it’s at home.

Well, if Michigan is the other team on the bubble, the San Diego loss becomes moot, since both teams have losses in the same RPI quadrant.

I believe he’s comparing last year’s 11-5 conference Michigan team who were snubbed by the selection committee to this year’s projecting to 11-5 conference Minnesota team. Gopher resume is looking stronger because of the Top 50 wins.

If the Gophers finish 12-4 in conference, then everything becomes moot, and everyone should stop wringing their hands, even Janel and Triple. :p

I should have been clearer, the above Michigan breakdown was for last season: the season they were 11-5 and left out of the NCAA.

This season's Wolverine team sheet is better looking (Michigan's worst loss thus far is to 63 Michigan State and they would get credit for losing to Notre Dame and Louisville):

https://extra.ncaa.org/solutions/rpi/Stats Library/DI WBB Team Sheets 2-15-18.pdf

Michigan top 50 RPI wins: 7 Ohio State, 33 Marquette

Michigan top 50 RPI losses: 2 Notre Dame, 4 Louisville, 7 Ohio State, 17 Iowa, 23 Rutgers, 39 Minnesota and 41 Purdue

Michigan's B1G wins: 7 Ohio State, 60 Nebraska, 63 Michigan State, 66 Indiana, 81 Penn State, 188 Wisconsin, 192 Northwestern, 192 Northwestern, and 213 Illinois

Michigan's B1G losses: 7 Ohio State, 17 Iowa, 23 Rutgers, 39 Minnesota, 41 Purdue, 63 Michigan State

Michigan's Worst Loss: 63 Michigan State

Indiana is not a gimme, even though they are 2-4 on the road in BIG play. I watched them beat Purdue in W. Lafayette recently and they were solid. It will be important to hold Cahill in check. That being said, I still think the Gophers are a better team and I'm hoping they can take care of business against the Hoosiers. Anyone else think Purdue could be a sleeper in the BIG tourney? They looked very good in beating Maryland last night and they've been known as a team that always plays well in the BIG tournament, including a nice run last year. Gophers go from their biggest game of the year against Michigan to what now becomes their biggest game of the year against Maryland. I guess the games are all big games this time of year for bubble teams. Instead of knocking on the bubble door, it would be nice to see the Gophers knock it down.

I say take care of the next three games and it should get them in the NCAA. I do have reservations however as I feel the NCAA committee is somewhat biased against the BIG; Little to close association with ESPN and SEC if you ask me but I may be a conspiracy theorist: I do believe NCAA owes the Gophers one for the horrible snub the gave the softball team last year-again I know it’s not real life but just me venting.
