Road Test Along the Potomac

Minnesota travels to DC for a match-up with the Georgetown Hoya’s (4-3) in McDonough Arena. Georgetown is coached by James Howard (first year) who was promoted following Natashia Adair’s departure to Delaware. Adair led the Hoyas to back to back WNIT appearances.

Last season Georgetown finished 17-13 (9-9 in the Big East). In last year’s match-up at Williams Arena, Minnesota prevailed 68-60. Minnesota trailed at the end of the first quarter 14-13. In the third quarter the Gophers took a 57-40 lead before a Hoya comeback cut it to 5 with 1:33 remaining in the game. Carlie Wagner scored 21 points and Kenisha Bell posted a double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Taiye Bello made her first start. The Hoyas’ Dionna White, who returns this season, scored 18 points and made 5 steals.

This season, Georgetown is projected 5th in the Big East. Their most recent game was a victory at Florida International (White had 24 points and 13 rebounds and Cynthia Petke 18 points and 16 rebounds). Of interest to Gopher fans was the Hoyas win over Northwestern 55-54. Georgetown led 32-21 at halftime. But Northwestern fought back. With the score tied at 54, Georgetown’s Tatianna Thompson was fouled on a drive to the hoop with .5 seconds remaining. She made one of two free throws for the win.

Players of Note:

5’5” G Jr. Dionna White (17.6 points per game, she also has 19 steals) White led the Big East in steals
5’8” G Sr Mikayla Venson (13.0 points per game)
6’2” F Sr Cynthia Petke (12.6 points per game and 11.7 rebounds per game)

Wins: Howard 93-41, @ Loyola Maryland 72-54, @ (Nashville) Northwestern 55-54, @ Florida International 77-56.

Losses: @ George Washington 54-65, @ (Nashville) Auburn 40-60, @ (Nashville) Chattanooga 41-54

Anybody else listening to the radio broadcast? Thibault from the Mystics is scouting Carlie Wagner. :(
I was hoping Carlie would be available to the Lynx in the third round.

When's Carlie's hot, you gotta keep going to her. They went away from her in the 2nd quarter for some reason. Was she being face-guarded? She's exploding again in the third.

Carlie ended up 12 of 15 from the field, 7 of 8 on 3's. 31 points. Sounded like she carried the team tonight. She was due for a game like that. Bell added 21 points, but had 9 turnovers and only 2 assists. Stollings played 4 posts in the first half, Lamke included. Gophers didn't get much from their posts tonight, although Edwards tallied 7 rebounds. Bello did not take a shot. Gophers outrebounded by large margin in first half, but rebounding ended at a 42-36 deficit. Nice win on the road for the Gophers. Off to the West Coast ....San Diego next.

Bell has yet to learn how to play point guard. She is more a 2 guard. She limits the effectiveness of her fellow players because of her lack of vision. Not getting the ball to the hot hand in the 2nd quarter is just one example.

Nice road win. In the third quarter Carlie started her 13 point scoring run with 5:06 remaining. She knocked down a jumper to tie the game at 37. With 2:20 remaining she hit a jumper for a 48-41 Gopher lead. Those two jumpers book ended three triples. She sounded relieved to have a great night after some sub par outings. Thibault was a good half time interview.

The eight point second quarter was bothersome; but it sounded like a game which demanded full attention. Minnesota was out rebounded 41-33. I'm assuming Taiye Bello got a hard work out it just 15 minutes.

By the way. If you want to check out our next opponent, it appears the San Diego/Cal game is on line

Has anyone heard anything about Gonzalez on radio or anything. Looking at pictures of team on social media (twitter) Gonzalez wasn’t in team picture on boat ride today in San Diego and if you look at pictures of bench during Georgetown game, it doesn’t look like she was on the bench. Anyone heard anything?

Kaposi made a brief appearance, but no Gonzalez.
