per the Journal Courier:

Kevin McHale is one of the greatest power forwards in basketball history, but as a member of the Minnesota Golden Gophers, he never enjoyed victory inside Mackey Arena.

McHale averaged 12 points and eight rebounds in four games, including a 66-64 overtime loss on Jan. 15, 1977 and a 58-56 defeat on Feb. 7, 1980.

He was named All-Big Ten in 1979 and 1980, and remains second in Minnesota history with 1,704 points and 950 rebounds. in 1995, to coincide with Minnesota basketball's 100th anniversary, he was selected the top player in school history.

McHale also will be forever linked with Purdue great Joe Barry Carroll. Boston Celtics president Red Auerbach traded the 1980 No. 1 overall draft pick to Golden State for Robert Parish and the third overall pick, which the Celtics used to draft McHale. The Warriors, of course, took Carroll.

Three NBA championships and seven All-Star appearances later, McHale established himself as an all-time great. In addition to his induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1999, McHale was named to the NBA's 50th Anniversary Team, and also to the official list of the NBA's best 50 players in 1996.
