2018 Gopher Baseball

Did I miss something, is Reggie Meyer injured or is he pitching today?
Penn State's radio guy said the Gophers were giving him a little extra rest thinking he has thrown a lot of pitches last few starts and he is expected to pitch today.

Gophers get the sweep with an 8-2 victory. Nice! Those fearing RPI disaster can exhale :)

Gophers finish off the sweep. Reggie Meyer gets the win going 5 innings allowing no runs on 2 hits walking 1 and striking out 4. Jeff Fasching pitched 1.2 innings 2 runs(both unearned) 1 hit 1 walk and 2 strikeouts. Jackson Rose went 1.1 innings no runs 1 hit 1 walk 1 hit batter and 3 strikeouts. Max Meyer finished things out pitching a perfect 9th striking out 1. Reggie only threw 60 pitches as they said the staff was being a little cautious with him as he has had a little bit of a tired arm. Terrin Vavra, Micah Coffey, and Ben Mezzenga each had 2 hits to lead the way at the plate. Gophers next action is Tuesday hosting NDSU.

Looks like the Siebert opener has been pushed to Wednesday and will be against Augsburg. Looking at both teams schedules it looks like either April 18th or April 24th are the best options if they really want to reschedule the game maybe May 9th could be a option too.

Offense showed up in a big way again tonight. 3 hits a piece for Terrin Vavra, Jordan Kozicky, Luke Pettersen, and Alex Boxwell. 5 RBIs for Micah Coffey 3 coming on a stand up triple with the bases loaded. Really good to see Jordan Kozicky have a nice night at the plate with the 3 hits including a homerun and just missed another homerun. Eli Wilson also added a homerun and it was a inside the park homerun as the centerfielder made a diving attempt and the ball rolled by him to the wall. Freshman Easton Bertrand made his first appearance of the season as he pinch hit in the 8th. Reggie Meyer started and struggled with location today. He went 2.1 innings and gave up 6 runs on 7 hits while striking out 3. He wasn't hit overly hard at all but the hits just seemed to find enough space. He was very unlucky on a 2 run homerun to left that looked like a very high medium deep popup but the wind was blowing out hard 25-30 mph to left at that time and the ball just kept drifting and landed barely over the fence. Brett Schulze came in and stabilized things. He got the win going 4.2 innings and allowing just 1 run on 2 hits walking 1, hitting 2 batters, and striking out 4. Josh Culliver pitched the final 2 innings and allowed 3 hits but did not give up a run.

Gophers move to 5-0 on Purdue's home field this season. Patrick Fredrickson started and struggled a little grinding through 3.1 innings allowing 4 runs(3 earned) on 4 hits while walking 1 and hitting 2 batters. Nick Lackney got the win and pitched well out of the bullpen. He went 3.1 innings and allowed 4 runs only 1 earned though on 3 hits 2 walks 1 hit batter and striking out 3. Ryan Duffy made his return from injury going 1.1 innings allowing 1 hit 1 walk and striking out 1. Jake Stevenson finished the game with a perfect 9th. Another big day for Micah Coffey going 3-4 with a homerun 3 runs scored and 5 RBIs. Jordan Kozicky had 2 hits including a 3 run homerun. Cole McDevitt had 2 hits including a homerun. Terrin Vavra had 2 hits including a 3 run homerun and Ben Mezzenga had a 3 hit day. Gophers scored multiple runs in every inning except the 7th and the 9th. Defensively the Gophers were a little lackadaisical and committing 3 errors and on most of those occasions Purdue took advantage and got at least 1 run off it. Hopefully the Gophers can get another good all around effort and finish off the sweep tomorrow.

Vavra has to be getting up there is national batting average race. Is he hitting .400?

He is batting .411, which is second in the B1G. Kid from Illinois is batting .457. I would guess he is in the top 20 in all of college baseball.

Gophers lose another game to weather as rain and travel curfew forced todays game to be canceled. That is at least 3 games now with this one and the 2 with St. Louis canceled. Also have the NDSU game that was postponed but not rescheduled yet. Next scheduled action is Tuesday at home with South Dakota State and then Iowa comes to town this weekend.

Thanks! Those are some gaudy numbers, even for college baseball.

With rain in the forecast and the travel restriction known, was there thought of playing 2 yesterday?

Not sure, there was rain around yesterday too but it stayed clear. Going into the weekend I actually wondered if they might play a doubleheader Friday because of the potential weather. I believe the coaches usually confer about it and most in the conference are good about coming to some kind of agreement but in the end I think the home team gets to make the final decision about whether they will move a game to a doubleheader or not.

If the NCAAs started today would the Big Ten get 6 teams in? Seems way to high but I don't know who you keep out. Indiana and Illinois seem to be a lock. Minnesota seems likely in. Iowa and OSU are bubble. Don't know what to make of Michigan...17 game winning streak is excellent but it is a garbage schedule. 19 of their 31 games against +150 rpi

Gophers #25 in the poll.

Gophers are ranked in 3 of the 6 college baseball polls. A couple go up to 30 and that is where the Gophers are in 2 other polls.

Kind of figured Siebert would be ready for Friday but Target Field isn't a bad backup option.

Pitchers duel through 4 innings as nobody could score or manage many baserunners. Both teams scored a single run each in the 5th and 6th. Iowa took the lead in the top of the 7th but the Gophers answered with 2 in the bottom of the 7th via a leadoff single from Cole McDevitt, Toby Hanson sac bunt, Jordan Kozicky double to tie it, Alex Boxwell groundout moved Kozicky to 3rd, and Luke Pettersen doubled off the right field wall to take the lead. Cole McDevitt had 2 hits for the Gophers and scored 2 runs. Reggie Meyer got a no decision and went 6 innings allowing 5 hits 3 runs(2 earned) walked 1 and struck out 5. Brett Schulze got the win going 1.2 innings allowing 1 hit and walking 1. Max Meyer got the save going 1.1 innings and did not allow a hit while walking 1 and striking out 1. Good to see Toby Hanson back in the lineup today as the DH announcers actually said he could've played last weekend and may have played Sunday if the game wasn't cancelled.

Patrick Fredrickson bounced back from a short start last weekend and went 7.2 innings today to get the win. He allowed 6 hits a few of the lucky seeing eye groundball variety late in his outing and walked 2 and struck out 2. Jackson Rose came on with 2 outs in the 8th to face Iowa's top hitter Robert Neustrom with a man on 3rd and got the strikeout. Max Meyer pitched the 9th to pick up another save. He allowed 2 hits and struck out 1. Iowa got lucky in the 9th as they got a leadoff double but the guy clearly should have struck out on the previous pitch ump had to just miss it. Offensively Eli Wilson was 1-1 with a double and had 3 RBI. Terrin Vavra had a double and scored a run, Ben Mezzenga had a couple hits and scored 2 runs. Iowa made a couple really nice defensive plays including a diving catch in the left field corner that would've been extra bases for Micah Coffey. Gophers should've scored another run but the runner must've been confused about how many outs there were and had to hold at 3rd after holding up at 2nd to see if the ball was caught or not. Gophers go for the sweep tomorrow afternoon on BTN in the Siebert Field opener.

Fun game today. Was a beautiful day to take my boys to the park. We will be at Siebert tomorrow for what will hopefully be a sweep.

Does anybody recall offhand where we finished 2017 RPI wise? I just want to get an idea of where we might need to be RPI wise to be in this year?

Last year we finished 72. A weak schedule killed us. 34 of our 57 games were against teams ranked over 100.

Gophers offense really struggled against Iowa starter Cole McDonald today. Didn't have a whole lot of hard hit balls the first time through the order and didn't get deep in counts. A little part of that was the home plate ump had a pretty generous strike zone and McDonald did a solid job mixing pitches. When the Gophers offense did finally come around with some hard hit balls they seemed to always be at a Iowa fielder and just couldn't find a gap. Also had a ground ruled double from Jordan Kozicky that would've easily scored Micah Coffey from first if it doesn't hop the fence. Sam Thoresen gets the loss and really pitched pretty well. He went 5.2 innings and allowed 4 runs(3 earned) on 6 hits and did not walk or hit a batter which has been a problem at times for him this year and he also struck out 4. The biggest issue for Thoresen was giving up a few hits hanging 0-2 sliders so just gotta execute better. In my mind though very encouraging start for Thoresen. Iowa's 1st run came on a dropped fly ball that Ben Mezzenga must've lost in the sun and juggled it and just couldn't hang on. Gophers also gave Iowa an extra run via a balk to move runners to 2nd and 3rd with nobody out in the 5th a couple of groundouts followed to score 2 runs before a strikeout ended the inning. Brett Schulze went 2.1 innings allowing 2 hits and 1 run coming on a solo homerun while striking out 3. Jackson Rose pitched a perfect 9th. Gophers will look to start a new winning streak Wednesday against South Dakota State.

Someone help me out. Do any of the polls mean more than others or carry weight for NCAA selection?

Like hockey, the Pairwise ranking seems to be the end all of all rankings. Does baseball do something similar?
