Before last Saturday’s 54-21 blowout victory over Nebraska, Gophers players and coaches wrote names of the people for whom they were going to perform — one from inside the program, one from outside.

Running back Rodney Smith wrote Rodricious Gates Jr., his friend since elementary school and his former teammate at Mundy’s Mill High School in Jonesboro, Ga.

On Aug. 6, Gates was shot and killed outside an apartment complex in the same county south of Atlanta where he grew up with Smith and Gophers linebacker Jon Celestin. Gates, 20, was found dead in a parking lot after a dispute, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

“I’ve been thinking about him and about how he would feel if he was here in my shoes,” Smith said. “I don’t take it for granted.”
