A good summation of the post-Coffey 'Cats:

Now, as NU prepares to open its season Friday at Chicago State, it must contend with the loss of nearly its entire starting lineup and the large majority of its scoring from a year ago, leading the program into an era of uncertainty without bona fide stars.
“It feels different,” senior center Oceana Hamilton said. “There’s not as much experience that I’m looking up to.”

With the high turnover, there are few returning contributors. Sophomore forward Abi Scheid is the Cats’ leading scorer from last year at 5.0 points per game, but she has zero career starts. Junior guard Amber Jamison follows close behind and had a strong stretch of Big Ten games midway through last season, but is not an experienced front line scorer...

...After several years of being a transition, spread-the-floor team that McKeown called “sleek,” the Cats are seeking to slow the game down and play primarily in the half court, what the coach described as a “power team.”

The shift is logical given NU’s personnel, which appears to be deeper and more versatile in the frontcourt. Hamilton, who started the first 14 games of last season, and sophomore Abbie Wolf, who had a strong offseason, offer promising size at center, while Kunaiyi-Akpanah and Scheid can both play inside but are more comfortable at the “4.”

Considering that versatility and having just five healthy scholarship guards, McKeown mused that he could play as many as three bigs at one time.

Busy day at Northwester with two departures:

Junior guard Amber Jamison has taken a “leave of absence” from Northwestern, coach Joe McKeown confirmed Thursday.
An athletic department spokesman announced the news before the Wildcats’ 88-70 home-opening win over Oakland on Thursday. The spokesman also said Jamison would not play again this season...

...Jamison was expected to be a big contributor to the Cats this winter. Among returning players, the 6-foot guard was second in scoring and second in total minutes played last year. She was also named a team captain by McKeown before the season.

In the team’s exhibition game against Missouri-St. Louis, Jamison played 18 minutes and shot 1-of-7 from the floor, finishing with two points.
The junior did not play in NU’s season opener at Chicago State last Friday, which the Cats won decisively.

“Amber is a tremendous student-athlete at Northwestern,” McKeown said. “(She) came in and has really grown in our program, helped us last year win 20 games, had a big impact on our team.”

The loss of Jamison reduces the active roster to only 10 players and five guards. Of those five, only senior captain Lydia Rohde had previously played significant minutes for NU.

Christie Sides, Northwestern’s associate head coach, resigned just before the season began to take a WNBA job, head coach Joe McKeown said Thursday.

Before the Wildcats’ 88-70 win over Oakland, an athletic department spokesman said Sides had resigned. McKeown confirmed during the postgame news conference that Sides made her decision “a couple of weeks ago.”

No announcement has been made regarding Sides’ new destination, but McKeown said Sides would return to the WNBA, where she worked for six seasons before joining the Wildcats.

“She came from the pros and wanted to go back to the pros,” McKeown said. “The cycle in that league for hiring is right now.”

Sides, who spent one season in Evanston, was considered a significant hire when she arrived in October 2016. She was promoted to associate head coach in May.

A couple mysterious departures at the same time.... dun dun dun.
