Rotating the 5.

The Golden Gophers return a trio of post players who combined for 32 starts last season. Two of them, Jessie Edwards and Bryanna Fernstrom, are seasoned seniors. Taiye Bello, a sophomore, was named the team’s most improved player after starting the final 10 games in a row. There is not one clear starter at center, and it might stay that way.

“We do have three players we feel can combine to handle that position by committee, and we’re fine doing that,” head coach Marlene Stollings said. “I think it’s going to allow them to play at a high level, knowing they’re not going to be out there for 20 minutes at a time or 15 minutes at a time.”

A rotation at center could help in the Gophers in multiple ways.

“We’re really lucky that we have a lot of different people that can play the 5 position,” Edwards said. “That’s because A, there’s a lot of competition between us and B, it’s great that we have so many different styles of post play. … We can change our style of play depending on who is in there. And it’s really great in practice because we get to play against different styles of post players, so we get to practice different kinds of defense.”

Fernstrom, Edwards and junior reserve Annalese Lamke are more traditional centers. Bello sees a lot of time at the 5, but can also play power forward and bring a different dimension.
