All Things P.J. Fleck Rumor Mill Thread - Listed as Candidate for Other Jobs

IIRC Nebraska has still been able to recruit some good guys. Maybe not top 10 but plenty well enough to build on.

Agreed. Consistently in top 5 in B1G and top 30 overall. Generally get 4-6 4* per class.

These threads are like porn fantasies. Can't leave until he wins the division or a BIG championship at a minimum. Given that scenario, why would a guy leave? We have no idea what the landscape here is after a championship. Why does everyone assume every coach is looking for greener grass and "more money"? Maybe coaching a champion is a great job in Minneapolis. If you think he is a guy that is going to split at the first offer that seems better, why would you support that kind of guy or the program who hires that?

When Paul Giel hired Lou Holz, everyone included the clock on the wall knew the guy was out of here when ND was ready which was imminent at the time. This is not the case with Fleck.

Agree. Going nowhere for at least 4 years. If Fleck's 2019 team has 9+wins in regular season, he gets a big extension.

I’d be less worried if he stayed longer because I think by then their will be more reasons for him to stay i.e. he’s winning, the media and fans will be on board, and we’ll be able to pay him more money. I could see him maybe leaving earlier (before he’s turned it around here) because he’s fed up with the negativity and/or is not sure he’ll be able to replicate here what he did in Kalamazoo.

This board can't seem to decide if Fleck is running Minnesota football into the ground from the heights of a 9 win season, or is most definitely going to have his pick of jobs to defect to after less than 12 months on the job. Maybe both!

Frost is highly unlikely. To go along with the massive chunks of change they would already be paying Pelini and Riley, the payoff to UCF to grab Frost is like $10M I think. I don't think that's happening, but I guess anything is possible.

$3M buyout.

Did someone on here ever make a list of Power 5 coaches who left directly for another Power 5 job?

These are ones that come to my mind...

1. Lou Holtz - MN to ND
2. Nick Saban - MSU to LSU
3. Brett Beilema - WI to Ark
4. Gary Anderson - WI to Oregon St (one year?)
5. Mike Riley - Oregon St to Nebraska
6. Houston Nutt - Arkansas to Mississippi St
7. Lane Kiffin - Tennessee to USC (one year)
8. Gene Chizik - Iowa St to Auburn

It's not exactly an impressive list where it's worked out well for the coach or school.

I'm sure there are many others that worked out better than I'm not thinking of.

Glen Mason worked out OK.

Tennessee lol. I remember when they were stealing Brewster. Being #6 or #7 job in the SEC is not what it once was.

Thanks. I was thinking Tommy T was one that was strange because it was inside the conference.

Also, we forgot:

Lou Holtz Arkansas to MN
Murray Warmath Miss. St to MN.

Clearly we poach SEC coaches, they don't poach us. :cool02:

Louisville wasn't Power 5 when Strong left for Texas.

$3M buyout.

Figures!! Damn Husker fan in the office told me the $10M number. At any rate, it would cost a bunch.

And YES, I am most certainly enjoying (finally) working on a project with a boatload of Husker fans! Still reveling in a glorious victory over the cornsters.

Based on buyout, Campbell, Brohm, and Fleck are least likely to go anywhere. If they do, their schools will be able to parlay the buyouts into pretty nice hires.

The only thing I found disturbing in this thread was that Fleck and Kiffen were mentioned in the same sentence. Hopefully the HYPER culture can shake that stain out of the crack in the shoulder.

Gruden to da Bears. No link, my prediction.

Gruden to Tennessee is pretty much done according to everyone here in Nashville.
Chip Kelly to Florida is gaining a lot of steam.
Also have heard Harbaugh to the Bears but I think that is the least likely of the 3 to happen. Seems like the Harbaughs really like Michigan.

Fleck is always going to be a highly visible coach and a top of mind guy for Internet scribes pulling lists from their bum. The day that changes is probably a pretty dark one around here. Let's lean into the weirdness and get some old fashioned flight stalking going to spice up the winter!

Let's all hope that isn't true because if you look back on this thread, his name isn't being found on, let's say, the majority of those lists.

Still like the hire though.
