per Marcus:

Former Gophers guard Akeem Springs is on the training camp roster for the Canton Charge, the NBA G League affiliate for the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Springs was fully cleared by his doctors last week. Eight months ago, the 6-foot-4 sharpshooter tore his Achilles in the Big Ten tournament quarterfinal win against Michigan State on March 10. Now he’s ready to pursue his dreams of playing basketball in the NBA.

The Charge begin their first official practice Tuesday at the Edgewood Community Center in Canton, Ohio. They play a three-way scrimmage against the Fort Wayne Mad Ants and Grand Rapids Drive Saturday in Auburn Hills, Mich.

Go Gophers!!

Question--are the Gophers obligated to see Akeem's rehab through to the end (since he was injured while on scholarship)? How do these type of injuries typically work when it's a senior? Does the athlete have access to trainers, rehab equipment, etc., even though they may not be enrolled any more?

That seems like an exceptionally quick recovery from a torn Achilles, Akeem is very fortunate! IF (knock on wood...please happen) last season was the start of a real turnaround for Gopher basketball, Akeem played a very key role in getting the ball rolling. I wish for nothing for the best for that kid and hope he can make a G league team and continue his hoops journey.

For what it's worth, 5 players with Minnesota ties were recently selected in the G league draft:

Canton selected Fresno State F (and former Minnesota prep product and rumored former Gopher target out of JUCO) Cullen Russo in round 1
The Wolves affiliate in Iowa selected Minnesota State-Mankato product Jarvis Williams in round 3
Texas selected Winona State product Grant Johnson in round 3
Delaware selected former Minnesota prep product Isaiah Zierden from Creighton in round 3
and finally....Oklahoma City selected former Golden Gopher and Golden Eagle Wally Ellenson in the 4th and final round
