A University of Portland basketball player is suing the University of Oregon, men's basketball coach Dana Altman and members of his staff for alleged negligence stemming from a 2015 recruiting visit that ended with an injury.
Crisshawn Clark, a 6-foot-4 guard who transferred to Portland from Pitt this spring, claims that an ACL injury suffered while working out for the Ducks in 2015 happened during a period when it was against NCAA rules to be working him out.
The lawsuit, filed Monday in Multnomah County Circuit Court, seeks at least $100,000 for "pain and suffering" along with loss of future income due to the knee injury.
According to the lawsuit, Oregon offered Clark a full scholarship in October 2015 while Clark was a sophomore at Canada College, a junior college in San Mateo, California. Clark was invited to Eugene for an official visit and the lawsuit claims that during the visit, Oregon assistant coach Kevin McKenna instructed fellow assistant Mike Mennenga to put Clark through a workout.
Mennenga worked out Clark after an Oregon practice, the lawsuit says, and put the player through a series of drills, including one where he was instructed to drive and finish at the rim while working through contact from Mennenga.
On what was to be Clark's last shot, the lawsuit alleges that contact from Mennenga threw Clark off balance, causing him to land awkwardly and tear the ACL in his left knee, which he had previously had repaired in April 2015 following a partial tear.
