The Gophers’ diminishing roster depth and dearth of big offensive plays portend a potentially long stretch for the seven remaining Big Ten games this season.

Minnesota benefited from Shannon Brooks’ 40-yard run to help take an early 7-6 lead over Purdue on Saturday. Brooks added a 19-yard carry and Rodney Smith produced 50-yard burst to propel a 14-6 advantage in the second quarter, but the Gophers didn’t get enough big-play production down the stretch in the 31-17 loss to the Boilermakers on Saturday.

Minnesota (3-2, 0-2 Big Ten) has lacked driving-easing, game-changing plays all season. They are tied for 116th in the nation with only 17 running plays of 10 yards or more. In the passing game, they reside at 118th, with 30 plays going at least 10 yards.

The Gophers have gotten their fair share of long plays, but there hasn’t been an abundance of intermediate gains to ease the load. Before Saturday, the Gophers’ dynamic running backs had modest season longs; Smith had a 29-yard best, Brooks a 17-yard gain.

Go Gophers!!

The lack of big plays means the offensive schemes need to be revamped. In its basic meaning, coaching is giving your players a chance to utilize their God given skills. Not seeing that with our offensive staff.
