2018 PWO Commitments

He won't win a scholarship in camp. As I recall there are disincentives that preclude scholies for PWOs until their junior year.

Correct. If you give a scholly to a PWO in his first two years, it counts as a scholly against that year. Since we signed a full class this year I don't believe this would even be an option.

It will be interesting to see how scholarships are going to be managed so that you have some always available for PWOs who earn their way.

However, there seems to attrition due to health reasons, kids quitting or transfering all the time. We hate to see guys like Nick Connelly have their careers shortened, Drew Hmielewski opt for baseball, or for Gaelin Elmore, Tyler Moore, and Demry Croft transfer out. But, that is reality.

It is not all about Xs & Os. PJ Fleck has to manage a full plate effectively to be successful, and be the head cheer leader. I still can't fathom where he gets all his boundless energy.

$3.5M a year maybe helps?

Avocado toast?

I believe Tinch has to just run track his first year (believe he is getting a scholarship/partial scholarship for track) and will then walk on to the Gopher football team at a later date. As I understand it, this is to prevent schools from using non-revenue sport scholarships for "extra" football scholarships. So I wouldn't expect to see him on a Gopher football roster this offseason.

He can't be on scholarship for track and walk-on to the football team. If he is getting scholarship money for track moving forward (beyond year 1) he can't play football in those years either. It seems strange to think that he would get a scholarship for track in year 1 but then not after that, so it seems unlikely that he will play football at all.

Something doesn't smell right with his whole situation. I refuse to believe that anyone would rather take a track scholarship at the U than a football scholarship at UCF. If it's because he loves track and prefers that, he'd have been better off playing football (for a better football program than the U's right now anyway) and being on the track team for free, rather than paying to be on the track team here.

Not sure if the rules have been changed this year. In past years, if a track scholarship athlete starts playing in a game, his track scholarship becomes the responsibility of football. Perhaps this is the reason behind not getting the commitment/s.

From what I hear, it's pretty rare for the U of M track team to give scholarships to freshman anyway. They like everyone to walk on and then they hand out the scholarships to those who earn it by performing at a high enough level.

Coaching staff at UCF left. So who knows if the schollie was still an option and if he had any interest in the new coach. You are correct though, you can't have any scholarship from any other sport and walk on at football.

He committed to the U in the fall, so if the offer actually existed, it was extended by the previous staff and would've enabled him to sign in the early signing period.

The identity of the new staff doesn't really matter - anyone who would rather have a partial track scholarship from the U instead of a football scholarship from UCF needs their head examined. Unless money isn't an object, which I doubt was the case.

Basically, I guess I'm saying that I find it highly unlikely that the UCF football offer ever existed.

I believe this should fall into this thread...

Navy transfer Owen Piche (S/LB) set to visit Minnesota on Thursday.

Here is his Hudl Page https://www.hudl.com/video/3/2661478/5721cc4e19a53e2a186ce104

Piche is a transfer from Navy with four years of eligibility remaining. Fleck had recruited him at WMU. He has already been offered a preferred walk-on spot and would be joining the team for fall camp. He was offered by mostly MAC schools as well as Army & New Mexico in HS.

Thanks ATL. It looks like a great addition to the PWOs.

What are the rules for transferring out of the service academies? He was part of their 2017 Recruiting Class which is huge! They had 50 commitments. https://247sports.com/college/navy/Season/2017-Football/Commits

The other thing, how is it that he has four years of eligibility left? Was he redshirted, or does the Naval Academic not redshirt?

Navy transfer Owen Piche previews Minnesota visit.

On a day where Minnesota will have Top247 quarterback Max Duggan on campus they will also be hosting a potential transfer. Owen Piche out of Naperville (Ill.) is slated to be on campus as well.

Piche is a transfer from Navy with four years of eligibility remaining.

“Once I got my release from Navy we immediately got in contact. Things moved very quickly, ive been accepted by the University of Minnesota and I’m looking forward to seeing Coach Fleck,” said Piche.

Fleck and several members of his staff have a preexisting relationship with Piche from their days at Western Michigan. He was extended a scholarship offer to WMU but eventually decided upon Navy.

He has already been offered a preferred walk-on spot with the Gophers. Thursday’s visit will likely lead to him joining the team for fall camp.

“If everything works out, I expect to come and to have to earn every single rep. To me this is a second chance at my dream.”
“From what I’ve been told I’ll probably fit into a linebacker/ safety spot. My goal is get on the field, it doesn’t matter where I line up.”

Since leaving Navy he has spent his time training and waiting to see what opportunities would present themselves.
Piche also has a strong relationship with redshirt freshman Chris Autumn Bell. The two played for the same 7-on-7 club when they were in high school.

“That’s family. I got Chris over anyone, any day”

Coming out of high school 247Sports had Piche listed as a three-star recruit.

Piche sounds like immediate depth and probably a good fit culture-wise if he was in between choosing PJ at WMU and Navy... Seems like a scholarship candidate down the line.

The story worth noting here is we are increasingly getting good quality PWOs. This is really critical for team depth especially on the defense side.

FIFY. Maybe not a tradition, but a trend
The PWO players we are getting now seem to be good players. We have been getting good PWO's for quite some time now

I had a family friend play a year of hockey at West Point and then transfer out. I believe the 4 year service commitment doesn’t kick in until year 2. Again, I may be mistaken as I am attempting to recall a story from 10 years or so ago and policies may have also changed.

Lastly, I think as long as he didn’t play he is considered a redshirt or is redshirt eligible according to NCAA rules.

I'd bet they redshirt everyone. Armed Service Acadamies don't have limits on number of players like the rest of the schools. They can have 300 people out for football. And they are all paid.

Everyone student at the service academies is in a real sense on a full-ride scholarship. The reason the academies can have as many recruits as they want each year is that every student on campus is treated the same way.

RSing is actually a pretty controversial issue when it comes to the service academies. The school administration picks/chooses if they will allow a player to get a 5th year.

It's important for some people to readjust how they think of redshirting. It's a decision that coaches obviously plan for, but it isn't really something that is official at the time.

So with Pinche, if he did not see any action for Navy last year, he can have that year be a RS, regardless of Navy's more nuanced RS criteria.

Can't find him on the 2017 roster. Don't think he saw the field.

Service Academies do not redshirt as we think of it. All players (along with the rest of the student body) are expected to complete their graduation requirements in four years. The only reason an SA player would ever get five years is due to an academic issue, or an injury that prevented a player from completing the necessary physical requirements for graduation. In other words, if graduation is delayed for a player for academic or physical reasons, then that player could play his final year if he still had eligibility. This happens maybe once per year for each school. Maybe. Bob_Loblaw is correct that the school administration, not the coaches, makes these decisions when the situtaion arises. The other thing the SA's do is use their own prep schools. Players in those schools are not allowed to practice with the team, are not enrolled in the Academy, and are not on the roster. They do have a team at each prep school so the players do play games... just not an NCAA sport. This route is used when recruits need to bone up on academics in order to meet the entrance requirements of the Academy. I don't know if Piche was a prep schooler though. If he was, then he never was even enrolled at the Naval Academy. Either way he should ge a good "get" and will be eligible immediately as Bob says.
