2018 PWO Commitments

If a kid hasn’t announced it on twitter, it’s not a commitment. Think you jumped the gun on this, which sucks because you got a lot of people excited.

And so with the rest of the committed PWOs. Only Zack Annexstad has enrolled.

The PWO commitment is non-binding, and any player can be swooped up with an offer.

What to be excited about - at least Antonio Montero made a step toward a PWO commitment.

Unless some P5 scholie offer pops up between now and the Feb. NSD, he is committed to the Gophers.

Am I right in saying a PWO versus a pure walk-on is that the PWO has a guaranteed spot on the 100 player roster? If so, that means there's only 15 slots for PWOs. I have no idea how many PWO we already have on the roster, but I can't imagine we've got too many open PWO slots (meaning open slots on the 100 player roster).

Number of kids in spring practice usually isn't an issue since the great majority of freshmen aren't early enrollees and the graduating/transferring players aren't participating.

In the fall there's a limit of 105 players participating in practice prior to the first game. We've seen years where some of the scholarship players are excluded from that list so more PWO/WO players can go through fall practice.

After the first game there really isn't any rule that I know of that limits the number of practice players- heck Nebraska had 160 players practicing a few years ago. There are usually school/conference (I think) rules regarding the number who can suit up or play in a game. I remember reading that the SEC allows 80 players to suit up for a game and play, and Alabama allows 15 more players to dress but not play.

But again, what makes you think he is committed? You pointed to the Scoop podcast, but the Scoop podcast didn't say he was committed.

I hope Montero does come here. I think if he enrolls at Minnesota he is one that will earn a scholarship in practice at a minimum as a kicker or kick off specialist. Not saying he is pigeonholed to that spot because in my opinion this guy can play offense or defense and has good athleticism. I see him as H-back/fullback type that would be really good in short yardage dive and passing situations. I think Montero will have a real knack for catching passes at the next level, and a nose for finding the open spots in the zones. Some guy's make plays on the football field, he is the type of athlete that makes plays. For some reason I see him as more of a playmaker with the ball in his hands on offense then on defense, I know he played linebacker at EP but I see this guy as an offensive guy. The coaches will know when they see him on offense what I am talking about. Best of luck to him either way, just don't end up at Wisconsin, they should have offered him a scholarship as he is legacy/family ties there. Gophers will see him scholarship worthy if he decides to join the program. It is height wise as to why he doesn't have D1 offers, and that he played all over the field, not just one side of the ball. Height wise he is a tweener for an H-back type. He has decent wheels and can really jump, that is what will make him a good pass catcher once he get's the experience.

Montero has not committed to walk on at the U. If things work out at Wisconsin, I believe he will ber a PWO there. Family ties at Wisconsin, and he's a lifelong Badgers fan. I don't think he's ever really loved the U.

Wha....?!?....

Sorry, had to go clear the vomit from my throat upon hearing that news.

Man, there are A LOT of Sconnie fans in the Cities. It's kind of ridiculous!

True Thompson of Iowa Western and Darryl's kid commits as a PWO.

Why another WR? We now have fifteen on the roster in spite of Drew leaving the football team. The same number for OL. I'd rather have eighteen OLs and twelve WRs. Oh well.

I suppose you need bodies for the practice squad in addition to regular starting roster players.

There are 21 OL listed on the roster, which is a good number. 15 does seem a little high for WR, but since we haven't gotten much production out of that group, bringing in as many new bodies as possible has to be helpful. True didn't exactly light it up at IWCC though.

Didn't 2 or 3 wide receivers transfer after right after the season? We still have 15? Wow.

Montero comitted to scholarship offer for the Rice University Owls. Don't blame him, good academic school, no debt when he graduates, good choice.

Anyone know if Tyler Johnson's younger brother has any kind of offer from the Gophers?

That’s 12 walkons. Thanks for the update Hungan.

As a bottom to mid tier B1G program (5th place average finish in B1G West), the quality of the Gophers' PWOs has to improve in addition to breaking into the top 30 nationally in recruiting in order to move up in the Big Ten. They really need good team depth in all the key positions, and they need the walk-ons to accomplish that.

Zack Annexstad is the one I am most excited about. We hope to see a few more kids like Blake Cashman.

Great for Antonio! Great school and he gets to play football and get a free education. I can't blame him for taking that opportunity.

Barron and Janes are both big adds for PWOs.

Congratulations to Antonio. Great for him and his family.

When someone offers to pay for a college education, it is difficult for some to turn it down. Every family come from different financial circumstances. Their kids have a chance of a lifetime that they have to make a decision on: Playing for the beloved homestate Gophers, or having a college education paid for.

Instate recruiting a priority for the Gophers for both scholarship and PWO players. However, they certainly will miss out on some top players with high national level recruiting on the one hand. On the other hand, they will miss out kids like Antonio Montero and David Alston who would have been great additions.

IMHO, the Gophers are more focused on the vision of building a solid team foundation for the future of the program. They will take the best players available to them who fit into their scheme. The 2018 recruiting class is a huge talent infusion on paper.

The Gophers have not given up on instate Minnesota players. About a third of the Gophers' Spring 2017 Roster Players are from Minnesota. Gopher Spring 2017.jpg

About another third are players from other upper midwestern states; Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois, Nebraska, the Dakotas, Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio.

Didn't PJ Fleck mention that the core players he is targeting are within a certain radius from TCF Bank Stadium?

I'd expect this number to vacillate up or down a little depending on the available crop of Minnesota HS kids with quality talent. Half on the 2018 PWOs are from Minnesota.

Home grown talent is critical to the Gophers' success. So are regional recruits from Wisconsin, Illinois, and other midwestern states.

The bad news is that Wisconsin, Nebraska, and Iowa are also aggressively recruiting Minnesota. We certainly bungled the opportunity to get JD Spielman to stay home ala Dedrick Snelson who ended up going to UCF. Nebraska will remind us how badly we blew it.

Oh well. Once they start winning, maybe more of the top tier players who normally would go to tOSU, Alabama, Notre Dame, etc... will seriously consider staying home.

There is nothing announced yet as of this morning in regards to the preferred walk-ons.

With Zack Annexstadt and True Thompson already enrolled by the looks of it, there are the other ten names on the PWO list that we hope will be announced officially today.

Keeping fingers crossed.

Excited for the future of Micha Roane from Chaska. That dude can really get in to the backfield and be a pest to block, which is good. He is going to be on both kick coverage units cause that dude can fly for a guy his size as true freshman. This will be one of the guys that earns a scholarship in camp. This guy knows how to beat someone one on one and be disruptive.

He won't win a scholarship in camp. As I recall there are disincentives that preclude scholies for PWOs until their junior year.
