Honest question- I expect that all pwo kids are looking for the full scholarship and that any of them could go elsewhere easily with an offer - is this a correct assumption

We are holding seven solid PWO commitments to date,

Not always. These guys have offers or just want to be Gophers. They will pay their own way for two years and then decide to stay, transfer, or get a scholarship at that time.

This is really an impressive list.

We need team depth, and hopefully the quality of PWOs will become a factor when these guys pan out. You need solid reliable serviceable selfless role players on the bench.

These players hopefully will be solid enough to weather attrition due to injuries.

I’m excited for our walk on group and I’m hoping for signing day additions to this list.

Honest question- I expect that all pwo kids are looking for the full scholarship and that any of them could go elsewhere easily with an offer - is this a correct assumption

Keep in mind that there are two completely different kinds of players that can be referred to under the simple term "walk on".

Usually, the "Preferred" walk on is a player who was recruited, at least somewhat, by the school. Was on the school's radar to some extent, but too many players at that position were ahead of him and accepted offers. However, while this player does not get a scholarship right out of high school, he's treated exactly the same as any other scholarship freshman. He reports to fall camp, given the same attention by coaching, training, nutrition, S&C, etc. staffs. Will most certainly be given reps in the spring, and have a chance to make some plays and earn more attention.

Otherwise, the "Traditional" walk on, what people usually think of, is some guy who was not recruited by the school at all, was not on the school's radar at all, and shows up to campus completely of his own accord (got accepted on his own merits). This type of player does not report to fall camp, and does not join the team until the school semester starts. Usually will never rise above the practice/scout teams, and even there might be used sparingly, depending on the position.

Would further say that it's probably true that not all DI teams even accept traditional walkons. There is a limitation on total roster sizes that schools have to adhere to. I believe it is a max of 95 total players for fall camp, and 105 during the school year? But I could be making that up ... I'm sure it's spelled out somewhere in the rulebook.

I believe the correct numbers are 105 total players for fall camp and 115 during the school year. I think it is 20 players over the 85 scholarship number for reporting to fall camp.

Preferred typically means that the player is guaranteed a spot on the 105 man roster while the walk-on is given the opportunity to make the team.

Antonio Montero was very impressive during the state tournament. Seems to have a great nose for the ball on defense and played played running back on the other side of the ball. I think he also kicked and punted! He would be an excellent get for a PWO, but it looks like he has an NDSU and Air Force offer already.

Montero isn't a for sure Gophers pwo? He was wearing a Gopher ballcap along with his EP jersey at the Vikings game, for the opening coin flip.

Are these guys that have been offered a PWO spot? Or have they accepted? Or how does that even work? There is still a ton of recruiting time left.

Well at some point you need to indicate to the school that you're enrolling, but I don't believe that has to be done until the spring.

Any PWO in theory can still receive scholarship offers. There is no such equivalent of a NLI for a walk-on spot.

They've committed as PWO's but haven't signed anything yet to my knowledge. So theoretically a school could still offer them or they could flip to a different PWO opportunity, etc. just like the scholarship kids before signing.

I've never seen a year where gopherhole wasn't impressed with the PWO class. But this one probably would be truly impressive if all these kids stick.

Montero also re-tweeted a Jon McNamera tweet on Dec 20th that Wisconsin reached out to him and he hasn't signed anywhere yet.

]

That is awesome if true. Gophers aren't exactly deep at LB. To get him over offers from NDSU, Air Force and PWO from Iowa State and wisconsin (maybe?) is a good get.

We should be in on at least one Eden Prairie kid every year
