P.J. Fleck
We didn’t deserve to win the football game. When you look at why and how we win football games. They flipped it on us.

They have incredible athletes. Fleck said they pulled a few redshirts.

We turned the ball over 2-0. Special teams played poorly; kickoffs out of bounds two times, missed field goal. Didn’t deserve to win the game. Lots of glaring statistics that show why we didn’t win the football game.

On the long game winning TD run:
Have to give them credit. Their four big playmakers all made plays for them. Didn’t tackle well in space. Said they were very athletic. Exposed a lot of their weaknesses. Had them stopped a few times, missed tackles, and they turned into big plays.

They made less mistakes than we did. Big difference in the game was them winning the line of scrimmage on both sides.

Thought the team played extremely hard. References lack of depth, again. Says more freshmen are going to have to start. Going to continue to develop them. Said he never questioned how hard they played. Didn’t play sloppy, poor, or undisciplined. Proud of how hard they played. Made too many mistakes to win the game.

They had a game plan going into the game to match up Winfield with No. 1 DJ Moore. Had to play more basic and base after Winfield got hurt.

Fleck said it was hard to get to the QB because their offense throws the ball so quickly. Said they had to give more help to the defensive backs, didn’t bring a lot of pressure tonight.

Demetrius Douglas is out for a while. Fleck mentioned a possible medical redshirt.

Love the atmosphere here at TCF Bank. Proud of the students and fans.

Lots of things to fix. Have a lot of young people to get caught up.

Young and no depth.

So you're saying Claeys had depth?

I'm saying PJ's got his crutches. Hell, even the team likely believes them by now since he has been stuck on repeat for so long. I heard him interviewed on KFAN and read this summary of his presser. It would have been nice if he had considered, even for a second, that maybe, possibly, he had some minor sliver of responsibility for his team getting beat at home as 13-point favorites.

if they were getting the ball out of their hand so quickly why were they playing such loose coverage also if Rhoda can't read the option correctly why run. by not pulling the ball early on you send no message to the defense whether you get any yards or not you just can't do that. Defensively I don't know why they are trying to play in the Big Ten with two guys that are under sized at defensive end that's not a 3-4 defense they are not quick enough to play small nor big enough to stand in there. Move Richardson to end with his quickness.

"We're going to make a decision as to whether we need to bring some guys back or not."
He's suspending players that he doesn't think he needs. Y'all think I'm nuts but he literally said it in the press conference.

PJ has many catch phrases and anecdotes that he preaches. One constant is about sacrifice. He says it repeatedly. Maybe more so recently than in the past. Generally, he follows this up with the explanation -- "what you are willing to go without or give up today for something you don't have." Me believes that PJ is going to play his system, suspend his players and not care one bit what results he gets this year. And likely even next year. His focus is on implementing his style of play and his culture. I just pray that his talent is able to catch up to his vision. If not, in the words of Clubber Lang, I predict a lot of pain.

Just a thought, if Maryland's defensive line is undersized but quick...maybe McCrary could punish them? I do believe he demonstrated the last game he deserved to get some touches? In addition, the circumstances seemed to beg for the opportunity.

I did not like the end of the half decisions at all. Take the timeout at 42 seconds and they run to force you to use another timeout...and they punt. Instead we put 9 guys on the goal line to take away their 65 yard hail mary that wasn't happening and give them the first down and a field goal.

PJ can coach better than he did today but 70 plays to 50, 350 yards on the ground to 80, etc (whatever the #s) and like he said tie game with two minutes to go. And make the field goal, so it's 27-24 and they have to score a touchdown...we play defense differently and probably win. The coaches definitely did some things right for sure, just thought the play calls on both sides could have been better in several ways.

And I'm tired of the poor me. You attract what you talk about...we won't have scholarship guys left if he keeps whining about lack of depth and experience. It will manifest itself. In life all we have is the present. Tomorrow is not promised to anybody. Don't brag about tomorrow. All we have is the moment. Yesterday is history. He says that but then is so fragile he has to make sure everybody knows things aren't perfect, it's not his fault, and then really emphasizes what we don't have, so that's what we get. Coach the guys you got, without talking about what you don't have or will have in the future. This team only cares about the present!!! Believe in the guys you have right now. Coach this team, these guys. At seasons end you can wax on about your poor me circumstances.
After today, and the weeks leading up...now the players have doubts and have excuses right from the coach to say maybe we are too young, too inexperienced, not good enough, not as good of athletes...I dunno coach says so. Well, what happened to the too's? Too small, too slow,... the the crack on the shoulder that says none of it matters...we are Gophers...we find a way how or whatever he says but doesn't do....again. Coach and believe in the guys you got. Stop wishing Sandy Stephens or the California kid is gonna walk through the doors. Coach the guys here now.

PJ had a big season on the back of an experienced QB, an all-world WR that fell to him via academic issues, and disciplined play, not to mention a moderate talent edge vs other MAC programs.

No doubt good coaching led to the disciplined play by the team as a whole and the development at QB. My concern all along has been whether Fleck can coach up lesser talented guys guys and out scheme the other guy to get those tiny edges. I'm a bit concerned about those things after today but obviously just one game. Can he get high star guys to come to a team that is struggling on the field?

Obviously I can do without about 20% of the schtick. As long as he's applying the rules, discipline measures, play time, and drug tests fairly there shouldn't be a problem in the locker room.

Well his drug tests just cost us a game so I'm glad he can count on his great locker room atmosphere.

I've been critical of today's coaching but there's nothing wrong with holding the players to high standards including drug tests.

Agreed. Setting high standards and even application of discipline for the four factors of academics, athletics, socialism (er, civic engagement), and spiritualism are important.

He can do it if he wants, but if he's going to go out of his way to suspend players on his own initiative, then he shouldn't be complaining about depth.
He chose not to play some of our best players, that's not a depth issue, that's a coaching issue.
If he wants to aggressively drug test then it's his job to make sure that his kids aren't using.

Not sure how you prevent it without drug tests and consequences, which he is doing. I agree with you on not blaming depth. He should have just said they need to figure out a way to play better.

Thank you. Holding players to standards is all too rare today.

I do not understand why we did not see the QB keep on an option play. It seemed like it was there all day. I can only assume that either the QB cannot will himself to pull the ball out and keep it or the coaches do not trust him to do it and so do not have the option play installed. Certainly we had demonstrated that running 3/4 of our offensive plays off tackle had no option whatsoever to be effective.

The rest of it, I've got no problem. We are one deep in most positions and when someone like Winfield goes out, we've got nothing else to make up the difference. We also saw what our lack of speed can do to a team.

As far as people like Crioft being out. No problem at all. PJ must install his culture and if it costs us a few wins this year to do so, so be it.

Completely agree, at the end of the day the players are still young men and learning how to be adults. Most of these guys will never play in the NFL and need to learn how to be successful citizens. If that means we need to lose a game like this so be it.

I wonder if Florida State, Miami, USC, Ohio State, Clemson, Washington state, Oregon, Wisconsin, Penn State, and most any and all DI football teams could pass a drug test for smoking weed? Doubtful. If this all it is, and PJ is trying to make a stand, should he? We just lost to Maryland for gods sake.

Of course not, all of these kids smoke pot.
This isn't a bible camp, don't do stupid things, and win games.
We're not paying to watch the moral development of Demry Croft, we're paying to watch Demry Croft run 90 on a read that Rhoda was incapable of making today.

I agree. Then why is Croft, McGee, and others out? A good reason, or smoking weed.

JB you seem to be in tune, what is it?

Fleck got beat at home by a terrible team on their third string QB, at home, off a bye. Not for a lack of trying around here, but you can't come up with a legitimate excuse to justify that one. I'm sorry. It's not Kill's fault, Claey's fault, Brewster's fault, Kaler's fault, or Tanya Harding's fault.

Next week, I think he needs to focus on a few more cliches on radio and TV spots. This team's best how to grow the boat will never change to be elite enough until the culture is changed in all four aspects in the hearts and minds. I firmly believe that.

How is Maryland terrible?

Culture change virtue signaling. He has to demonstrate that it's not just some saying he ripped off out of some other great man's autobio. This is a program full of vagrants and criminals, haven't you heard?

He just needs to coach college football players.
