Northwestern cornerbacks Roderick Campbell and Brian Bullock will miss the remainder of the 2017 season after undergoing season-ending surgery, a team spokesman told InsideNU.

Campbell, a talented sophomore, was one of three true freshmen that saw the field last season as he helped fill the void created by Keith Watkins’ injury. With Watkins out for a second consecutive season, Campbell won’t be able to replace him once again; he had shoulder surgery which will sideline him the entire season. The injury was not suffered during training camp but rather a nagging issue that the cornerback elected to address this season. Campbell will use his redshirt and have three years of eligibility remaining.

After redshirting last season, Bullock was thrust into the No. 2 cornerback position in the second half against Nevada after Marcus McShepard departed with an injury. Bullock was hurt on a pass breakup in the fourth quarter and underwent foot surgery shortly after. He’ll have three years of eligibility remaining, although a medical hardship waiver (medical redshirt) could be a possibility.

Starting in Week 3 across from Montre Hartage, Trae Williams’ surprisingly early return from achilles surgery helps ease the burden of Campbell and Bullock’s absence. Alonzo Mayo was back on the field against Bowling Green, and he’ll provide depth along with walk-on Moe Almasri. One thing is for certain: Northwestern cannot afford any more injuries to its cornerbacks.

Williams is not at full speed or strength on that achilles.
