PJ Fleck appeared on the Sports Huddle with Sid, Dave and Max on WCCO Sunday morning. He appeared at 11:35 - an hour later than usual.
(note - Fleck was really hoarse - almost lost his voice)
Sid: Johnson got off to good start again. he's helping team.
PJF: team's growing up. Tyler is a prime example - works hard - does the right things. you're seeing the results on the field. we need him to become a big-time weapon on the outside. proud of him
Sid: forcing turnovers. 17 pts off turnovers
PJF: really happy. whether we win or lose, most important thing is to play the best football we're capable of playing. played well on defense. only gave up two scores - one was on a fake FG (our guys did a good job, but they made a good play), and offensive side fumbled the ball within our own red zone. other than that, defense was popping the ball loose. the ball's the program. that's the staple of our team. in our locker room, we keep standings in B1G not by record, but by turnover margin. #1 stat. guys in negative are 1-1 or 0-2.
Sid: didn't run ball early. later in game #23 was fantastic
PJF biggest thing is that Rodney and Shannon are each other's best friend. selfless. not selfish. incredible people. don't care who gets credit. getting better. coaches doing job to get them opportunities. calling designed runs based on their individual strengths.
Mona: three questions: o-line played better. teams hand ball to official. players stay away from bouncing punt.
PJF: (#2) the ball is the program. we need to cherish ball. in practice, players hand the ball to a manager. we try to play game the right way. respect ball. (#1) O-line is connecting. have to play as one. hard to get young line to play well together. Ed has done a tremendous job. (players were) challenged by us as coaches. biggest thing we have to do is run FB, stop run on defense. that was mission accomplished. have to demand that you get it. we're not where we need to be yet - not even close. proud of progress. we got better Tues, Weds, Thurs, Fri in preparation. (#3) Punts - ball is the program. always comes back to that. late in game, windy, raining, lot of times automatic call. didn't want something to happen. advised team to get off field when ball went 15 yards down field. Peter calls (?) don't want to beat ourselves.
(shorty's note - I think the Peter call he referenced has something to do with punt return coverage. Anybody have any inside information?)
Max: adjustments on defense - what is that like at halftime?
PJF: halftime structure. defensive coaches get together on one side, offense coaches go to a different room, players are on their own for a few minutes, then I come in to talk to them. working with the 20 minute clock. it was a 3-1/2 minute walk to locker room, have to hurry up. at halftime, can't focus on everything. focus on 2 or 3 things you can get better at, tendency wise. worked with Robb a long time. halftime adjustments -the way they adapt to offense, defense, special teams - (our coaches are) the best in the business. have to cover things most important to you.
Sid: cost a TD on penalty. great run Croft made.
PJF: win or loss doesn't matter. (what matters is) how did players play? did we give everything. winning or losing happens. the reason why it happens, that's what matters. shot ourselves in foot with penalties. don't want to lead country in penalties, don't want to be on bottom - rather be somewhere in the middle. chop block, have to look at that, not sure it was a penalty. - holding penalty - got to cut down on those. make sure not taking penalties on catastrophic plays. got TD called back. that's FB.
Sid: did either QB win the position?
PJF: I've only watched film 1 time. I need to watch again. Connor played really well. one of 1st times he's completely taken over team, leadership wise. it's not about doing all the right things - it's about making sure the team becomes yours. that's what the QB has to do. Demry ran for TD, that's what he gives you. we're going to see both QB's at some point as you go through year.
Sid: Murray's certificate.
PJF: sorry about the voice. RTB, Ski-U-Mah.
