Early prediction: Minnesota 31, OSU 20

Star power: The Golden Gophers are again paced by running backs Rodney Smith and Shannon Brooks, who combined for 145 yards and one touchdown in the win over Buffalo. Johnson matched his 2016 receiving-yard total in his first game of 2017, amassing 141 yards on six catches including a 61-yard touchdown. Senior Conor Rhoda is Minnesota’s new starting quarterback and went 12 of 20 for 176 yards, one touchdown and one interception, though sophomore Demry Croft also played against Buffalo and completed 7 of 12 passes for 63 yards and also totaled 32 rushing yards on six carries. Defensive back Antonio Shenault led the Golden Gophers with 10 tackles and two pass breakups against Buffalo.

Did you know: This is the third time in four years that OSU coach Gary Andersen has faced Minnesota. Andersen’s Wisconsin teams went 2-0 in their rivalry games against the Golden Gophers in 2013 and 2014, before the Beavers lost 30-23 in Minneapolis to open last season.

Threat level (1-5 scale): 5. These are desperate times for OSU, following a blowout loss at Colorado State and a comeback win against Football Championship Subdivision foe Portland State to begin the season. The Beavers must improve drastically on defense to slow Minnesota’s rushing attack, and coach Gary Andersen knows it. “Those backs are real,” he said minutes after the Portland State win. “You better become really good tacklers real fast to be able to control and maintain these guys.” OSU allowed more than 500 yards of total offense against both Colorado State and Portland State.

Go Gophers!!

Portland Tribune chimes in:

The Beavers will be motivated to prove they're a better team than they showed the first two games. They'll have an opportunity to beat Minnesota, which is a Big Ten school but not to be confused with Ohio State, Penn State, Michigan, Wisconsin or even Nebraska.

It should be a competitive game, but one in which the Orange and Black will fall short.

THE PICK: Minnesota 28, Oregon State 20

This is why I don't subscribe to the Portland Tribune.

Minnesota vs. Oregon State Fearless Prediction & Game Preview - CFN

One Reason Why Minnesota Will Win

Oregon State really, really can’t stop the run.

After being powered over by a Colorado State team that could only manage three points a week later in the loss to Colorado, Portland State powered at will running for almost 300 yards. QB Jalani Eason took off for big yards, Za’Quan Summers tore off big runs in chunks, and the Beavers had a nightmare of a time putting the game away.

Minnesota might not have a high-powered passing game, but it can grind as well as just about anyone.

Buffalo loaded up and did a great job against the 1-2 punch of Rodney Smith and Shannon Brooks, but the emergence of Demry Croft – who hit 7-of-11 passes and ran for 32 more – in the quarterback rotation gave the Gophers another option.

One Reason Why Oregon State Will Win

The Gophers had problems with one really tall quarterback, and now they have to deal with another.

Buffalo’s Tyree Jackson came up with a few brilliant throws, but the rest of the team didn’t give him a whole lot of help.

Oregon State’s Jake Luton might have problems throwing picks, but he bounced back from a rough finish against Colorado State to come up with a good performance against Portland State.

Oregon State has the potential to throw against Minnesota, but Minnesota might have the potential to throw against Oregon State.

If Ryan Nall and the Beaver running game can get going, the Beavers might be able to get up early at home. If that happens, and Minnesota has to mount any sort of a comeback, it’s uh-oh time for the Flecksters.

What’s Going To Happen

Oregon State will be fine at times, but it won’t have the ball.

Minnesota will grind, and grind, and grind, and grind, as the running game that didn’t work last week kicking in and producing with solid performance.

The Gophers will win the time of possession battle, will be even in turnovers, and will come away with a win in an uggo – look elsewhere for aesthetics.

College Football Picks: Week 2 - Bleacher Report

Minnesota (1-0) at Oregon State (1-1), 10 p.m. ET

Jake Luton offered the promise of an improved passing game. It might happen eventually, but the Beavers shouldn't expect that progression to occur against a Minnesota defense adept at limiting big plays. The result may be a boring slugfest, but that's how a run-focused Gophers team should prefer it.

Prediction: Minnesota 24, Oregon State 17

I am taking Western Michigan in this one.

Athlon chimes in:

Final Analysis

Oregon State won't get many better opportunities to pick up a win than this one. Minnesota is deeply inexperienced on both sides of the ball and appears vulnerable to dropping games in a tough road environment. The problem for the Beavers is that they have too many defensive issues to count on stopping teams at critical junctures. The Golden Gophers are still figuring things out on offense, but their defense should do enough to hold Oregon State in check.

Prediction: Minnesota 24, Oregon State 21

Greder chimes in:

GAME PREDICTION — After being a 24-point favorite before last week’s 10-point win over Buffalo, the Gophers are two-point underdogs for Saturday’s game against Oregon State. Minnesota will have to overcome the late kickoff to provide Fleck his first road win as Gophers coach. Gophers, 21-20
