Comparing Maryland, Rutgers, Wisconsin, and Minnesota Recruiting

The Maryland Terps finishing off Texas 51-41 is not surprising given the level of recruiting they have done in 2015 thru 2017. They have a new facility and the hiring of DJ Durkin to replace the fired Randy Edsall helped their cause.

Maryland certainly will be a scary opponent for the GOphers on Sept. 30.

They have been amassing Jimmies & Joes the last three years and in the 2018 recruiting cycle.

When Maryland and Rutgers both joined the B1G, I wondered who would benefit the most. Maryland seem to have a win-win situation with alumnus Under Armour billionaire Kevin Plank bankrolling the MD athletics program (similar to Oregon and Nike) and the strong geographical recruiting base in the DC area and PA. Look for them to make a lot of noise in the B1G East.

With Rutgers it is hard to tell at this juncture.

Wisconsin has been very consistent in recruiting and having established a good offensive line tradition and are noted for taking 3* players and coaching them up.

As stats have shown, Minnesota was destined to be forever a fourth/fifth place team with Kill/Claeys. Even then, the level of recruiting was improving but not to the level to mount a serious challenge to move up in the B1G West. With Kill stepping down due to health reasons and the firing of Claeys with the sex scandal and his slow recruiting, the team had thirteen decommitments for various reasons and had taken a step back in the overall recruiting. Claeys taking the team 9-4 was not enough to save his job.

IMHO, Minnesota recruiting has to be in the 30s or better to be a perennial contender in the B1G West.

There is no question that Minnesota will not go anywhere without recruiting and a good solid stable coaching staff. Ergo, the hiring of PJ Fleck to right the ship. It took Jerry Kill's and others efforts to wake up the University BOA and Administration to do something.

It won't be easy. Minnesota is geographically challenged. Look for PJF to change perceptions and sell the program. Everyone in the B1G West is trying to improve. Minnesota needs to get lucky, wake the sleeping giant and win the B1G West championship to break the 50 years of absence in the title conversations.

In comparing Minnesota, Maryland, Rutgers, and Wisconsin in the current and previous three recruiting cycles Maryland seem to be going upper tier in recruiting:

Being Under Armour U definitely helps.

Looks like we got lined up with Maryland just in the nick of time. Could be a completely different looking team very soon.

Agree. I think the new facility will help immensely. I think PJ is head and shoulders above Kill and Clayes in regards to recruiting. Last night WMU hung right in there with USC.

The Gophers never have done that though, even having a chance to actually win on the last possession maybe?

I'd guess his point is that the Gophers did the exact same thing with the exact same opponent under Jerry Kill.

USC was ranked #25 in 2011 when they played the Gophers and won 19-17. They finished at 10-2. In a weak South division of the PAC I would bet the house that the current USC team would throttle the Gophers in 2011 and 2018. I also wouldn't be surprised if the current WMU team wouldn't have beat the Gophers in 2011 and this year

Neat.

You're right Gophers losing 19-17 to a decent USC team on the road (a team that finished 10-2) is NOTHING like Western Michigan losing a close game to a USC team on the road. Nothing like it. At all.

But the real question is, would the 2018 WMU team be able to beat the 2011 USC team?

What are the chances that we get lucky and land a legitimate immediate impact type player or two between now and NSD? That is, if we have scholarship(s) available.
